Extend Newton

I would sign Cam now, and as always be looking for the next guy as well. Pats Defense was solid yesterday and the sorry Offense (QB) made it impossible.

No question we can't do better than Cam for the next 3 or so years and he has looked great so far with no off season.

Yesterday certainly helped Cam's cause for an extension but I'd still be cautious with the terms. If Pats can get him in the 4/100 range I think that would be great but not sure if 30+ makes sense. As well as he has played his numbers are decidedly middle of the pack with the offensive explosion going on across the league. Would not be surprised if one of the top QB's finishes the year w/o a pick. Even his 68% pass completion numbers are only 16th in the league and his yards per game and passer rating are bottom 3rd. Obviously he is much more than just passing stats but I'd still like to see them wait a bit longer for a major commitment. .

Wonder how the "bill should go forward with journeymen and not pay a QB" crowd is doing now..

Paying the QB isn't as important as paying the right QB. We don't know yet if Cam is the right QB. The season's still young.

Bill is out of his mind if he doesn't extend Cam or at the very least gets us a decent quarterback. We can't use journeymen to take us where we want to go. Eventually you need to PAY the quarterback. This game needs to be a reality check. We have a good enough quarterback in Cam. Letting him walk so we can save cap won't ever win us another superbowl in my opinion,

The reality check from last night is that Bill let Brady go without a decent replacement. What was he thinking?

I would agree, other than I'd change "No question" to "Most likely".

Perhaps :
(1) we aren't winning the SB w Brady
(2) so why go through this again ?
(3) it's a good time to hit restart
(4) because we agreed to NOT franchise him
(5) and he is leaving

You don't need an elite QB if you have a really good defense.

With that said, you need a quarterback, not a passer. We need to extend Cam.

Extending Cam would be a bigger mistake than letting Brady go without a viable option.

Most SB's are won by elite QB's that are passers first. Not all but most.
Brady (8), Big Ben (2), PEDton (2), Wilson, Mahomes, Warner, Brees and Rodgers account for 17 of the last 20, unless I'm missing someone. They also represent most of the teams that made it to the SB but lost.

I'm not criticizing him for any of those possibilities. I'm wondering what he was thinking by leaving the Pats with no decent QB, which became obvious last night without Cam. I don't think there's any way that Bill was ever going to tank the season.

I agree. We are not winning chips with Cam. Don't want to pay him or pray that he stays healthy. Time to start over and find the next guy in the draft.

True.

I think judging the QB play in last nights game is tricky. Last minute travel, last minute starting QB infected, closed facilities, vs arguably the best team in the League...

If things don't improve vs Denver, your argument is strengthened. Cam has exceeded my expectastions, despite it being early still. He is the clear #1 and even me writing that seems foolish, as it is so apparent.

Cam is already signed for this year at great value for the team. There's no reason to change that.

From what the capologists here tell me, the Pats will have oodles of cap room next year. Again, there's no reason to lock in Cam in case a better option shows itself, like Cam did this year.

You never know what other veteran QB will become available also.

When the Pats let Brady walk I thought it was a sign that Stidham had developed into the starter. It's clear now that it wasn't the case.

Then we should tank. I’m not being facetious, if you really aren’t convinced Cam is the answer then you can no longer be plausibly convicted Stidham is. So we should lose out.

Why? It’ll just be guys like Cam or Rivers who most of this board is going to think is washed or doesn’t have the necessary attributes to win and we want to pay them either. People are also going to complain about a Cousins situation coming out and getting that type of contract done because it’s too much.

You either draft or are just going to be hoping a Cam falls in your lap between journeymen. Unless Cam falls apart this year he will find a minimum of 3 year 30+ million contract guaranteed. The 25 million Brady and Brees want are anomalies based on them being set for life

No. Tanking is for losers. Scout and find a solid QB. There are plenty of franchise QBs not taken in the top 10.

The Pats didn’t really let brady walk brady chose to walk. Yes if a bidding war had occurred the patriots were not going all in on a 43 year old QB, but they would have given him the same contract Tampa did.
So any conclusions of what their logic was in him leaving are not real.

So a week in which Stidham got no practice reps, no game plan for him, and had to travel across the country on game day tells you Stidham sucks?

If anything the fact that the Patriots were able to hang with the Chiefs under such conditions with Brian Hoyer as QB should tell you that paying Newton $30m a year isn't worth it.

That's a Bill O'Brien move.

Nobody is going to tank. It doesn't happen.
