On a temporary basis? It absolutely isn't.

You don't get it, do you? Laying off people and just giving them a small amount of money is only a tiny bit of relief. Do you know how hard it is for those people to get their jobs back after this thing is done? They are going to be unemployed for months and/or years. This is why it's a difficult decision to make to shut down an entire nation of 350 million people.

HE got rid of overhead and bureaucratic infighting by merging separate departments with the SAME MISSION.
He demoted the office's clout, which is consistent with his anti-science bent as also shown by his climate change policies. It's also consistent with his actions in Jan to mid-March where he downplayed this crisis.

India in all-out lockdown, and they’re more than 2X the size of the US at 1.2 billion population.

On a side note, I’ve never met an Indian person I didn’t like. Love their culture and values, and the general cultural sense of humor.

Then, frankly, you don’t know much about India. While this may be true of the vast majority of Indians living in the United States, that is far from true of certain segments of the population in India. Physical and sexual abuse of women is still pervasive and largely unchecked, despite international condemnation of the more egregious, well-known crimes. The cast system still exists the social inequality makes the US look like amateurs in this regard. Modi’s nationalist party has instituted laws and policies that have led to widespread discrimination of Muslims by the Hindus, including recent widespread violence and murder of Muslims. Not only do the police largely let this violence happen, they often participate.

How do I know this? My wife was born and raised in India before moving to United States in her late 20s. She would never consider moving back to India. When she flies home she always is worried above being either verbally or physically assaulted by Indian men if she is traveling alone and spends time in a large city, like Delhi. The fact that she is very attractive probably doesn’t even matter to those men. Any woman is a potential target.

Where she grew up, and where are some of her family still live, they live under the rule of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which basically gives the government and its military unlimited powers without accountability. It was put it place ostensibly to stamp out militant groups and anti-government factors but mostly it just givesthem the freedom to beat, jail and even murder citizens without consequence.

I’m not trying to bash you for making a positive statement about the Indians whom you have met, because I’ve had the same experience here, but if you have extra free time due to the pandemic and want to learn more about India is really like, reading about the treatment of women and Muslims in India as well as the AFSPA would be a good start. Reading up about Winston Churchill and why he is hated by the vast majority of Indians would also be worth your time. Churchill was a racist and all around despicable human being. There is a good documentary about England, India and Pakistan in the era of Churchhill

PP2....if you disagree, state your reasons. Also, counter the evidence in The NY Times article

Already did. Many times.

The virus is just not going to go away because we get tired of social distancing. It will not go away if we focus solely on restarting the economy. It will only go away strictly because of two things: testing and isolation.

Just hang in there buddy; in about a week or two, you'll see how truly terrifying this virus is as the bodies start piling up like nothing. Our buffer is just about gone.

Thanks for the insightful post. What is the Churchill doc?

Wow - I had no idea. Yes, all of my dealings are personal and professional but limited to Indians living in the US and surface level business dealings with Indian citizens. Thanks for the information.

Kind of? Americans of Chinese heritage are being harrassed here

My wife and Kids were born in Korea and are frequently confused for being Chinese, no harassment for my family members.

I saw his interview last night on CNN and he did not paint it as an either/or decision. He actually said that devising a solution to both protect the health of the citizens and allow people to go back to work ASAP is the value-add that government is supposed to provide. However, he makes it clear that health takes precedence so in lieu of having that functional solution, lockdown is the solution for now.

Regards,
Chris
Thanks. The tweets and headlines are making it out to be that he views the two problems as mutually exclusive (which you've demonstrated he doesn't).

Massachusetts is *far* from the "most anti-Trump state in the union". I mean, that's a fairly easy myth to disprove by looking at a little bit of data and having a perspective that goes beyond the immediate place you reside.

In 2016, 60% voted for Clinton; 35% voted for Trump. So, doing some clumsy math, just over half of these crowds you're referring voted for a Democrat; 1 out of every 3 people voted for Trump. Hardly the 'anti-Trump liberal mob' you are implying exists.
Clumsy math is right. 3 times as many people voted for Clinton or someone other than Trump. 2 out of 3, 650 batting average. A quarterback completing 65% of his passes bs one who completes 35%. That's a landslide. 65

Water under the bridge at this point. The recovery is going to require massive government intervention, regardless.

That’s not how this works. If your going to make claims of xenophobia, let’s see you provide the evidence before throwing around terms like that.

Not going to waste my time holding up a mirror to you.

Read this today from ZH and thought it was pretty insightful:

At some point, the country is going to have to open up the supply chains and take the risks to let the market work to provide food — or people will engage in panic buying, hoarding and using any means to get what they need for themselves and their families.

Reports of folks in this heavily armed nation stocking up on guns and ammunition suggest a widespread apprehension of what may be coming.

If the medical crisis is allowed to induce an economic crisis that leads to a social crisis, the American political system, our democratic system, may itself be severely tested.

Lest we forget: In the greatest crisis in this nation’s history, in which the issue was whether the American Union would be severed into two nations, Abraham Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus, shut down state legislatures, closed newspapers, jailed journalists and was prepared to arrest the chief justice. And for the dictatorial measures he took, and for waging the bloodiest war in U.S. history, against fellow Americans, Lincoln is now regarded by many as our greatest president.
This would be a truly sad reflection on the US and its citizens if the pandemic results in a breakdown of society. There are foreign countries and societies that don't have a 1/3 of the resources available here that are not falling apart as a society.

Is the USA society so weak that gun toting nut jobs are so prevalent and paranoid that they could fall apart instead of coming together? Who are these people?

I refuse to believe this will happen. Local leaders will step in and fill the obvious void in the national leadership.

Not going to waste my time holding up a mirror to you.
Sad. And the 2 winner ratings weren’t sarcasm either.

Easy to make claims when you cop out of them I guess though

Yeah, it's just a little bit more money...no big deal. We can always print more, right?
