Just need someone to tell Trump a great president, Abraham Lincoln, declared martial law for the good of the country. They even put his head on a mountain.

All we would need is some kind of slogan.

Maybe something like "Make America Healthy Again"?

Do you know what that would do at this point? It would cause massive unemployment...that's not a light decision to make.

Massachusetts is *far* from the "most anti-Trump state in the union". I mean, that's a fairly easy myth to disprove by looking at a little bit of data and having a perspective that goes beyond the immediate place you reside.

In 2016, 60% voted for Clinton; 35% voted for Trump. So, doing some clumsy math, just over half of these crowds you're referring voted for a Democrat; 1 out of every 3 people voted for Trump. Hardly the 'anti-Trump liberal mob' you are implying exists.

Massachusetts had 32.81% vote for Trump. The only states with less were California, Vermont, and Hawaii. District of Columbia was also less, but not a state.

Lest we forget: In the greatest crisis in this nation’s history, in which the issue was whether the American Union would be severed into two nations, Abraham Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus, shut down state legislatures, closed newspapers, jailed journalists and was prepared to arrest the chief justice. And for the dictatorial measures he took, and for waging the bloodiest war in U.S. history, against fellow Americans, Lincoln is now regarded by many as our greatest president.

False.

Lincoln did declare martial law in all states, but writs of habeas corpus was only suspended in the state of Maryland and parts of the Midwestern states. He did not "close newspapers or jail journalists" in the broad sense of those words. His orders were interpreted that way, by the military who carried them out against anyone who was fomenting revolt against the Union.

And please do not ever put Lincoln and trump anywhere in the same sentence, if you were ever thinking of a comparison (and I hope you were not).

We are in an era of monumental stupidity.

I actually watched that live, decided to watch Tucker for 1st time in a decade, switched right after that disgusting display. This guy actually thinks he's being noble and brave for suggesting this.

India just LOCKED down their country of 1.3B people.

We need to do the same. The sooner we LOCK DOWN the sooner this is over, IMO.

Right now, I think it's a very real threat to the NFL season.

Not to take anything away from Cuomo, but creating a superficial, straw man choice between the "health of Americans" and the economy to justify a protracted total lock down isn't helping.

The health of Americans is directly implicated by a months long shutdown. A broken economy doesn't support the long term health of Americans. It's a more nuanced issue than that. What's needed is some outside the box solutions to protect BOTH, like people are raising in this thread (such as antibodies tests, quick result tests taken at the start of each work day, etc.)

Yes, by his kind of people.

Do you mean Trumpers? @fightingirish595 clearly is more conservative in his party preference but is definitely not a Trumper. He’s been one of the most balanced and insightful contributors to this thread. He might vote for him, but he’s critical of Trump too.

You are living in fantasy land. There is no one who will order 350 million citizens to stay at home and practice social distancing. Only if the President declares martial law...
You paid out-of-state tuition at UVA. Is it too late to get a refund?

It's kind of strange really though of course I see how different we are as a society.
But the healthy surviving this is how we evolved in the first place.
We are actually fighting natural evolution ... but we really have no choice.

I love this guy. Standing up for what is right against the crook in office. Can we vote him in?

To get dark, the thing is people do put dollar values to human lives based on years. For risk based failure modes where the result is death, we'd calculate the cost of a death to (be 78 (avg life exp) - 48 (avg patient age) ) *150k (value of patient's life per year). So each death we might cause due to a failure mode would be about 4.5M. Multiply this by probability of failure mode occurring and we'll decide whether the cost to either reduce probability or create a fault tolerance is worth it. Else we roll the dice and a patient could die a preventable, but costly, death.

So you could do the same thing here. Using say 65 as the average age of the coronavirus victim, you'd get a value of life about 2M. So 2T/million deaths.
