Inexpensive Extensions Before Free Agency

Obviously, anything can happen in the last 2 weeks in March. Also, we have injury issues: Andrews, Cannon, and Develin.

Belichick likes to try to extend a few low level players, as camp competition and insurance. My list includes:

Ferentz (IMO, we're not paying for Karras unless he is replacing Andrews)
Newhouse (hopefully, he can be cut later, but we need 2-4 OT's)
Eluemunor (RFA)
Roberts (especially if Develin isn't coming back)
Folk

I think that there are Belichick's kind of end of the year very low cost contract extensions.

Slater, Ebner, Bethel, Roberts, Butler, and Shelton seem likely to return for relatively little money. I don't know if they'll go with Folk or Gostkowski.

Good idea & good thread. I hate to be a broken record but it is difficult to
wrap my mind around drafting or signing players until the QB situation plays out.

Think they'll keep Gostowski and bring in a kid and keep Gost unless the kid is really impressive. Seems cap wise, they may as well hang onto Gostowski until they get someone better.

Folk was good but boy does he make me nervous. Has had kinda an erratic career at times, worried things could go poorly for him quick.

Gostkowski couldn't hit a damn thing before he got hurt, though. I don't think either are particularly great options at this point, but money and It Could Be Worse are the big factors.

From what I can see, Gost is a possibly 3.4 cap savings. Pretty significant. Wonder what Folk would want, like a mill?

He was playing injured and then exacerbated it. They were hoping to avoid surgery.

(A) They were reporting that his injury wasn't necessarily season-ending, and (B) that was just six weeks later. My guess is he's back.

Rodrigo “Hot Rod” Blankenship is a stud, and projected to go between rounds 4-6. He’s the one from Georgia who kicks with the thick glasses (hear me out), but he’s got a strong leg, was accurate, and had ice in his veins during key big moments. I’m hoping that they grab him in the 4th like they did with Gost 14 years ago.

Personally, I didn’t see anything all that useful with Roberts in that role. He served his purpose and showed why he is a captain, but I don’t think his blocking was particularly effective.

My understanding is that the injury was the reason he was so off...it had bothered him all through training camp and up until he was IR’d. Am I wrong? If he is back to somewhere close to his old self, I don’t see any reason the Patriots wouldn’t want to keep Gostkowski, and if they let him go, he could be the highest paid kicker in the NFL. Some teams with really bad kicking options will bid against each other for the likely All Decade 2nd Team placekicker and cross their fingers he is still accurate and strong. He could have a bunch of productive years remaining.

Agree on the offense. Isn't it generally acknowledged that the type of offense you run depends on the type of QB you have and hence his skillset will determine what pieces you need to surround him with?

At some point in the near future they’re going to have to draft a new kicker, and if your kicker is coming off a rather serious nagging injury AND you can save 3.5m dollars, then it might be time to make the move.

On the other hand, if Gost is totally healthy, he’s likely still the best option due to his experience kicking in the elements.
