Could the PATS D produce a "shutdown" performance if necessary?

lol Pitt shutout seattle without Hampton or Polamalu, two fo our best defenders, so I doubt Seymore being back would make the defense better than pitts, but the pats dont really need that great of a defense right now at least.

No, the Pats don't "need that great of a defense right now" - they just have one. I love people taking any aspect of this team lightly. It's hysterical. Do you have ANY idea how easily we are going to beat the Steelers? Just wait. You'll never come back here.

Oh, and congrats on shutting out freakin' Seattle.

Wow, I didn't expect you to get all defensive lol Makes me wonder if you are worried about the game, which you should be. Dfense wins championships and the steelers got a better one than the pats, its not anything personal its just the facts

First half points allowed by the New England defense

Jets: 7
S.D.: 0
Bills: 7
Bengals: 7
Browns: 0
Cowboys: 10 (+7 via the offensive fumble)

I'd say that's some pretty good evidence about this defense. It's not giving up points until the game plan changes, for the most part.

It's the points after the opposition figures things out that keep this from being a true shutdown defense.

its not that we cant produce a shutdown performance... its just that teams step up their game to another level when they face the pats, with all the media attention the pats had during the offseason, making them the superbowl favorites... teams are bringing their A-game...

regarding the steelers... they came in quiet entering the season and seattle got caught off guard, thats why its a shut out, they never thought steelers could come up with that kind of victory... now knowing that the steelers only have one loss, and a legit contender... the next games wont be shut outs anymore...

You're kidding, right?

You are quite right, defense does win championships, but if you have two teams, both with very good D's, the one with the better O will win. And guess what, that would be the Pats, not the Steelers.

I think that the Pats "D" needs some more time to gel. You have to remember that our best defensive player still has not played yet. Once you have Seymour back in the lineup, then you can rotate Seymour, Wilfork, Green, and Warren in and out and keep all of them fresh. And moving Green to NT with Seymour and Warren at DE on passing downs is going to be great. You also have to give Seymour the credit he deserves as both a run stopper, and maybe the best d lineman at smelling out screens and draws.

Also Rodney has only played 2 games, and AD is still learning MLB. Give Merriweather some more time, I like what I've seen from him so far (although Eugene Wilson's play has not been up to par).

Give this d some time to get health and play together, and yes, they can be dominant.

You have a good defense but lets not get carried away. Your Defense held the Charlie Frye led Browns to 7 points, So I can't give your team much credit for holding the 4th highest scoring team to 7 points.

The Steelers played the following offenses:

Bills ranked 30th in scoring

49ers ranked 31st in scoring (and they scored above their average)

Cardinals 13th ranked Cardinals (scored 7 below their season average, ST's TD)

Seahawks 25th ranked in scoring (shutout good job)

So the vaunted defense has played three of the worst offenses in the league (I count the Frye led Browns in that category). Lost to the best offense they played and shut out the 25th ranked offense.

While the Patriots have faced;

24th ranked Jets (they scored their season average)

11th ranked Chargers (they scored 8 points below their average)

30th ranked Bills

7th ranked Bengals (they scored 12 points below their average)

4th ranked Browns (they scored 11 points below their average)

2nd ranked Cowboys (held them 14 points below their average, Defensive TD)

I think that speaks for itself. You have a very good defense, but you have played horrible offenses and your defense didn't do enough to win against the best offensive team you faced. You need to consider all of these things before you declare that your team has a better defense.

Simple things like the Pats opponents average 23.4 ppg and the Steelers have averaged 18.4 (with the current Browns offense) take out the Browns and it falls to 16.05.

Let us recall that looking just at scoring numbers leads to somewhat overrating the Pats' defensive performance and underrating the Pats' offensive performance. That's because of the small number of offensive TOs and sorta average number of defensive TOs there have been.

If Brady were throwing one more pick a game than he has been, the defense would probably on average be giving up a few more points.

yea, but u cant fault the D for the mistkes the O does not make...

and yea, steelrs have a very good D, one of the top 5 best i think rit now...but i believe its pretty much on par with the Pats D...defenetely no better

Barring injury of course + the return of Seymour will greatly improve the D. As the season goes, I think we'll see much better performances f®om them. My biggest ?? concerning the D will be answered when our secondary faces Peyton. This has been my area of concern all season, but I'll save my judgment until week 9.

IF cows were made out of chocolate, steaks would taste different. So what?
