Jeff Howe: Pats in market for a WR and TE

From a Bucs forum...

"From what I've seen of Howard in my all-22 viewings of our passing game, I do not agree with Arians. Howard is not getting regularly jammed or focused by the defense. He gets clean releases all the time. Nor do we draw up plays that are designed to go his way. He's an afterthought in the passing game who is most often used as a sixth offensive lineman. Very rarely is he the primary read, and very rarely is he the prime focus of the defense. Defenses are selling out versus Evans and Godwin, as they rightly should. If Brate is in the game and we're in the red zone, defenses focus him alot, as they should. But Howard? No way. He's getting single covered by backers, which is a matchup we should be expoliting. We aren't. There are opportunities to get Howard the ball if we so chose to do so, especially given the focus our othere receivers get. But we don't because reasons and therefore."

"We knew Arians's scheme uses tight ends as blockers, not receivers. It was plain as day based on his time in Arizona. He liked guys like Jermaine Gresham and Darren Fells who were excellent blockers but moved like dump trucks. He rarely threw to them, and made no obvious efforts to find more dynamic weapons at the position. The optimists assumed he'd change that based on what he was inheriting here. So far, they've been wrong. He wants three/four receivers on the field who can all beat single coverage, and he wants tight ends who can block enough for the QB to find them. Same thing with backs. His backs need to block. It's why Barber is still playing so much and Dare is coming in on 3rd down. His wideouts are the stars of the show, the rest block."

You gotta love when someone on the internet tunes into A22 and then goes on disagreeing with an experienced pro football coach like Arians.

Thats really funny and sad.

That being said maybe Licht is in the right to hold onto Howard if Arians is truly so static in his approach to the point where he doesn't use natural mismatches. Maybe the coaching needs to be reassessed.

.

I was going to say the exact same thing....an amature against a professional. However...he's correct in regards to how Howard is used...and that's just Arians philosophy...not necessarily right or wrong. The Pats just use TE's for various roles....not just blocking.

Arians has been a complete ******* when discussing Howard. I’ve seen a couple of TB games, and from what I’ve seen, Howard gets open quite a bit. It’s a mixture of Arians’ scheme and Winston’s incompetency. OJ is being completely misused.

With Josh going to IR and Bennett on the JetBlue to DFW are we still sitting at 52 players?
This kinda pisses me off, just 2.5 weeks ago there was no roster spots for Watson, but now, not only is there an empty spot, but we have 2 TEs sitting on their azzes taking up 2 more spots, yet Josh had to be IRd, for what?

I wish he stuck around too. He'd be more productive then the other 2 combined. And why not use him as a move TE...he weights about 230 lbs now. But in the end...BB is the coach and not us...he's made some OK decisions the past 20 years.

Coaches and GMs get **** wrong all the time. This whole "Coach, so right. Fan, so wrong. GM, so right. Fan, so wrong." mentality needs to die. It's just the appeal to authority fallacy being used to dismiss opinions. without the use of any relevant facts.

Just to follow up on this, we have an example from the Vikings/Redskins game:

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer elected to try a quarterback sneak from the team’s 34-yard-line on a fourth-and-1 with the Vikings up 16-9 and just under three minutes left to play in the third quarter....

...“Well, honestly, it was a mis-executed play, but it was probably the dumbest decision I’ve made since I’ve been here,” Zimmer said.

Mike Zimmer: Fourth-and-1 non-punt was “dumbest decision I’ve made” here

Were the fans who disagreed with the decision wrong at first, because they were disagreeing with the coach, only to magically become right once the coach acknowledged how stupid his decision was?

Wait a while.....

If we can't land Howard then I would be interested in dishing 7th rounder for Vernon Davis. He has been dealing with a concussion. Take another month off, learn the playbook then pour your heart out and go out as a champion.

I agree. And this goes with any profession - particularly politicians.

What is there to be upset about?

It was NOT a matter of finding a roster spot for the injured Gordon. Belichikc decided to move on and replaced Gordon with Sanu. So, don't look to the TE's. If you want to be angry, be angry at BB signing Sanu, or in the value of having Gordon on the team competing with Harry and Meyers for one active roster spot.

Like Flash Gordon said "interesting".
