Some are assuming that mutual interest means it’s a done deal Thomas is coming back. Meanwhile what would you be doing now if you were Thomas’s agent?
more cash. But I think DT wants to play here

guy has one big pre-season game vs. 4th string cornerbacks and people here assume teams around the league are going to be lining up to throw money at him?

granted its not 100% hes back. but some of you are acting like its 25% or more.
One poster thinks we are "screwed" if he leaves. Who knew a 33 year old WR with a bum Achilles was the difference maker here.

negotiating a 2 year contract with the patriots with a signing bonus and 2019 salary minimum contract guaranteed.

There are 32 teams in the league. Never underestimate what others are willing to do if they see any edge.

Thomas no longer has a “may not play again” attached to his name. And he is now in an offense with a handful of WR options. Do you think he’ll still be cool with a contract that’s almost exclusively based on putting up big numbers? And one-year guaranteed for just a few million? I wouldn’t be if I were him.

Other than Harry or Bennett, who exactly from that list did we need to keep on the roster in order to IR-DFR?

I get people assume Thomas coming back is a done deal, but in the NFL there’s no guarantees.

Kirk Cousins disagrees.

these are all assumptions....for now, I am going to go with the reports from those connected to the team who expect him to be back.

Do people realize there is not more DTR for the IR?

It's been reported that Thomas WANTS to come back and that the Patriots are interested in having him back. Why would you think it's not more than 25% that he's back?

As was mentioned. Thomas isn't 100%. However, the Patriots were the ONLY team that reached out to him. He's stated that meant a lot to him. And it's why he would be willing to come back..

While there isn't a separate DTR list, you are still allowed to designate any two players from IR who were placed there AFTER the final cut-downs to 53 to return in a given season.

So, guys like Andrews, Froholdt, Ross, King, etc are gone for the year for the Patriots. Guys who might be IRed tomorrow (Calhoun, Burkhead, etc) would be eligible to return during the season.

Yes I know. I still think most people think you have to designate the player AS you put them on IR.

Can we get a real source? The dude's a liar.
Has anyone asked you why you keep saying this? Sorry if I missed it, but you seem to be crying out for someone to ask you what you mean.

and they are mistaken

NE helped Thomas out by actually reaching out and signing him when no one else was willing to. Now Thomas is helping them out by waiting a couple days to come back onto the roster. It's not a huge deal if he's on it for Week 1 since that just guarantees his salary, and his salary wasn't very much - most of his payday comes from per-game roster bonuses anyway. The Pats could likely throw him a bone back by bumping up his guaranteed money when he is re-signed since it's clear he's on a path to recovery, which he would undoubtedly appreciate, and perhaps adding a year onto the deal if he wants that. I'm not too worried about it. It seems like both sides are working in very good faith here.

I don't follow other teams all that closely over the years, but it seems the Pats ALWAYS have at least one UDFA make the team, if not more. Is this normal? It feels "special"

No, nobody has. And I'm not asking anyone to ask me. I'm just asking people not to use him as a source of information anymore. But the reason is he made some false claims of what was said on that Tyreek Hill recording. I can't let that go.

Along with all the guys they add to the list during the season, provided 2 have not already been activated.

That seems to be the consensus, and I do think it’s true. I will admit there’s a small part of me that does think his agent might talk to him about how he now is essentially open for anybody who wants to sign him, and teams saw how good he looks, so it might be hard for him to turn a big offer somewhere else. It would be surprising, and disappointing, but I don’t think it would be shocking.

Supposedly the Colts have a 21 year streak of having a UDFA make their roster.. Personally, I think that attest more to their failures than anything..

For the Patriots, it attests more to how deep their scouting goes..

The only thing I wish I that they could figure out how to hit more in the 2nd round..

That’s why Harry is the one going on IR. Thomas’ return is a done deal because it’s a done deal. The Pats and Thomas negotiated his new contract before his release. I’m sure he got something of monetary value for cooperating.
