Patriots Cuts

So my question is: why, of all the players, would you release DT for a roster shuffle like that? If it's really all predicated on an IR designation, wouldn't it be better to release someone who's gonna draw less interest/isn't as "proven"?
He is a vested vet. Who gives a ****. He does not pass though waivers

Because his contract no longer makes sense and needs to be re-done (meaning he could go or stay, but on different terms.)

It had to be a 4 year veteran, because of the way waivers works. It's an NFL issue that should be easy to fix, but never is.

Few things.
- DT is not subject to waivers
- Cutting DT prior to the 1st game means his contract is not guaranteed
- DT is still not 100% which would mean he'd likely not dress for games
- It's already been reported that the Patriots were the ONLY team that talked to DT in the off-season and he appreciated what they offered so is willing to return.

I don't know what that means. I'm asking as I literally have no clue and I'm sure I'm missing something obvious lol.
Its been posted in the thread multiple times. Read

Vested Veteran means the Player has at least 3 accrued seasons.

Is it possible we could bring Thomas back on PUP?

Kidding lol.

Reports are that the interest is mutual in Thomas coming back..

Herald even had an article up on it already.

I addressed this in another post. This may be genuinely true but is no means a guarantee he’ll be back. He’s a free agent and both he and the Patriots may no longer agree on fair market value for numerous factors.

Orrrrrrr you could just take the same amount of time it took for you to cook up both those half-assed replies, to explain something super quickly

Thanks for explaining and not just telling me to "read". Didn't know vets aren't subject to waivers. Crucial detail lol.

You can only do this with a vested veteran because they do not have to pass through waivers. If you cut a younger player you have to expose them to being claimed and you lose them.

Additionally when you cut a veteran their contract is null and void unamortized bonus accelerates so that is a consideration. I think Thomas is the perfect candidate.

Also, since he wants to stay, what are you really risking?

Thanks for the additional info. Makes way more sense now.

It's vested Vets.. They have to have 3 accrued seasons.. Crucial point. A player with only 2 accrued seasons still has to clear waivers.

Other than Harry or Bennett, who exactly from that list did we need to keep on the roster in order to IR-DFR?

I get people assume Thomas coming back is a done deal, but in the NFL there’s no guarantees.
Its been reported both sides are interested in getting back together. Nobody is just assuming.

All of them are on the roster. We don’t have injury info so don’t know when they are able to play.

Some are assuming that mutual interest means it’s a done deal Thomas is coming back. Meanwhile what would you be doing now if you were Thomas’s agent?

guy has one big pre-season game vs. 4th string cornerbacks and people here assume teams around the league are going to be lining up to throw money at him?

granted its not 100% hes back. but some of you are acting like its 25% or more.
