Something is being reported wrong. There would be no reason to sign the deal if it automatically voids.
It just makes no sense. People don’t do things for no reason.

Brady's deal has the Patriots on the record for $30 million for 2020 and $33 million for 2021, setting the salary for next year that can be turned into an extension at any time with some or all guaranteed if both sides agree. They just cannot increase the salary in the deal before it voids at the end of the NFL year. Both sides got an agreed upon salary for next year and either can simply let the deal void if it isn't the right thing to do for a 43-year old quarterback who is contemplating moving to NYC.

I think this also tells all the other teams that the Patriots are serious about TFB ending his career in Foxborough, so if you want him you better be prepared to cough up serious money for a 44-year-old. That 2021 year is important. Brady clearly wasn't going to sign anything that didn't get him to the year he turned 45. That is an important signal to any suitors.

I don’t see why they would necessarily have to wait until the season is over, though. I stated the “end of season” (let’s hope early February) just because they probably wouldn’t want to mess with it during games. I don’t think there would be anything preventing them from extending him before the end of the league year, would there? The pact expires at the end of the league year, that’s all.

3) made Brady a free agent at the end of the season

4) prevents any new contract before the end of the season unless it is a lowball deal

All of that has been reported. My question is when can the team re-structure or extend the deal? Anytime as some here are reporting? Or does it have to wait until the 2 day period for UFA right before the end of the season? $30M for 2020 is at or below market so he would have to take less to re-structure before end of season? What would be the purpose of that, to push bonuses down the road again?

Can you elaborate on this a bit? What constitutes a lowball deal? I’m assuming that it couldn’t exceed the amount for the recently negotiated 2019 figure. Is that correct? If so, what could we be looking at?
