Anyone feels this will become a season long distraction if Brady starts the season without a contract? I don't know who Tom Pelissero is but he's saying (presumably from inside sources) that there's no Brady deal on the horizon.

No new deal 'on horizon' for Tom Brady, Patriots

A distraction for the media pundits, sure. The reality is we never truly know what goes on internally.

It is an oddity that Brady is going into a contract year, don't believe he's ever gone into one and damn sure he's never played one. There is no doubt a reason why that's the case but I doubt we will ever know it. When it gets done (and it will) it will get treated as routine by both sides (same as always) and neither side will say much during the process (same as always) so hard to picture a distraction coming out of it. Just a bunch of no comments followed by an announcement.

    His ending statement is:
While potential free agent Tom Brady is fun for the rest of the league to think about, don't expect it to come to fruition, according to Pelissero. He noted the Patriots have a track record of getting deals done late in the summer -- including with Brady -- so the prospects of him actually seeing the end of his current deal is unlikely.

Just click bait..without an Eire apparent in the stable. The Patriots are not letting their only stud gallop away. They will get this done.

Brady will sign 1 year vet minimum contracts going forward just to piss off excuse-maker GMs.
Then.....a few years down the road after retirement, Brady's name shows up as a minority owner of the NEP, along with Bill's.
I'm thinking 2.5% each ($75 million parting gifts for the pair that made BK $3 billion)
    Just sayin

If that actually happened, the Patriots would be investigated for Salary Cap violations - and deservedly so.

There is reporting out there (Bedard?) that believes they cannot do a deal until a year after last years rework in August.
Iirc Brady’s new contracts come out of the blue with no reports of negotiations leading up to it.

My question was a “What if?”. What if there’s no contract by the time season starts?

If there’s no contract by the first game, then yes, it will be something of a distraction, simply due to the attention that it would receive.

There is zero reason for the Patriots to not give Brady a new contract if they plan with him beyond this season. So if he plays the Steelers game with no new contract, he won't be a NEP in 2020.

I don't think there will be a distraction. Why? Because whatever happens before and until the Steelers game will have a purpose behind it. Whatever that will be.

Can you imagine the CA-RAZY madness that would fall upon the League if Brady was available to the highest bidder after this season ?

A soon-to-be 43 year old football player with tens of millions of dollars thrown his way by every franchise that thinks they are “one key player away”... Would be quasi impossible to explain to future generations !

And the publicity for the league... it would dominate all media.

Luckily, I suspect the odds are minuscule.

I figure that the contract structure will be effectively a series of one year deals with de facto mutual options that have rapid guarantees of base salary on the start of the league year and very little dead cap potential. Once the Patriots get past this year the cap gets a whole lot easier as the deferred bonuses built into the back end of Brady's deal will go away and the Pats should try to pay Brady as they go.

So here is my plan (which I've stated before, but will bore you all again):

    1) TB12 signs 2 yr extension.
    2) TB12 and the Pats dominate this year to another Super Bowl.
    3) After the SB parade TB12 pulls a hammy celebrating with the kiddos and despite numerous avocado treatments sits out the 20-21 season.
    4) Pats go 0-16.
    5) Pats draft Trevor Lawrence.
    6) TB12 heals up and leads Pats on one last miracle ride in 21-22 and retires with another ring, all while teaching Lawrence everything he knows.
    7) The Trevor Lawrence dynasty begins.

While anything is theoretically possible it's hard to envision it happening. Does anyone seriously believe that sometime between the anniversary date of last year's restructure and this year's opener it won't get done?

First TB has stated he never wants to play anywhere else. Second he's still the best in the league so BB wants him. Third people forget about the Franchise tag he ain't hitting UFA.

There is no way that Kraft ever lets Brady put on another uniform, case closed!

There are one of three possible scenarios playing out.

    1) Kraft and BB are taking the "lets see" approach with their 42 year old QB and letting it play out during the season. The NEP nuclear option is telling Tom to go find his value in FA and then the Pats resign him to a 2 year deal. There may be some element of "lets see how Tom holds up", but not enough to stop a deal. I don't think this is whats happening but I figure i'd throw it out there.

    2) Its Tom who is waiting- not NE. Hes waiting to see how his body feels at the end of the year and is placating his wife who only wants him to play if he is healthy and not at risk for permanent cognitive or physical debilitations. For example, if Tom experiences a significant head or back injury, signing the extension now would bad for both parties (Tom gets the $$ but he needs to come back and he wants to play & end his career on his terms and the NEP loose cap space). I think this is legitimate possibility.

    3) They have already agreed to the framework of a deal and need to wait until Aug, cut-downs or other deals are done (restructures, trades, etc) until Tom puts pen to paper. I put this as the most likely scenario.

I think all of these are possible, with #1 being the least likely. I just think it's all media speculation and it's designed to whip the fan base into a frenzy and create clicks. I think they, BB/Kraft/TB, know what they are doing in regards to this situation.

The freakin' guy is 42. I just don't see there being a need to rush a deal.
