A daily reminder that no team had lost the SB, then win the next one in 47 years

That SB 47 years ago was also the only time the losing team was held to 3 points.

I'm looking to see another historical happening get duplicated. It's time to take the Bills' place as the last team to have gotten to 4 straight Super Bowls.
I find it amusing how much Bills fans thump their chests over that accomplishment. While it's true they are still the only team to have gone to 4 Super Bowls in a row, I think the fact that they, ya know, lost all 4 puts some tarnish on the achievement.

Yep, that narrative was being trotted out when we were 9-5.

"No team has lost the Super Bowl and gone on to win the next year, and this year's New England Patriots are no different"

Crickets now....
It's happened before. Dallas lost a SB and then beat Miami the following year. Miami bested them to win the next 2 SB's after losing to Dallas.

Interesting stat: The last three times the Patriots have lost in the playoffs, the following year they've won it all.

2013: lost to Denver in the AFCCG; won the SB in 2014
2015: lost to Denver in the AFCCG; won the SB in 2016
2017: lost to Philly in the Super Bowl; won the SB in 2018

Not a bad pattern.

If you’re looking for a reason behind the pattern, I think it has to do with injuries. Very good health in 2014 and in 2016 Gronk was gone but otherwise very healthy. 2018 was probably the healthiest Patriots team of the last 19 years.

2015 was probably their best roster besides 2004 and 2007. That team was absolutely loaded but lost Hightower, Edelman (came back hobbled for playoffs), and Lewis. In 2017 they lost Hightower and Edelman again.

This stat just says that the patriots either lose in the playoffs or win the Super Bowl...

Haven’t we known that since 2001? (Aside from two fluke tiebreaker years we didn’t make the playoffs?)

So basically it just means that they almost always make the playoffs.

To be fair, it seemed a reasonable sentiment when they were 9-5. About five TDs into the Divisional game in the first half surely put everyone on notice otherwise.

I had an Eagles fan friend who used to tout that the Eagles went to 4 straight NFC title games during the Reid era.... he stopped touting that fact about 4 years ago....

===============

My biggest fantasy is for us to go 19-0....to make it 4 Superbowls in 6 years (Noll Steelers), 4 straight Superbowls (Levy Bills), and an undefeated season (Shula '72 Dolphins).

That would also give Brady 7 rings...more than Jordan, Kareem, and catch up with Otto Graham, LOL.

^^^^^^^

I like your collection, but a bit puzzled. Is there something to the arrangement? I keep looking at it like it's supposed to mean or spell something but can't quite figure it out.

From top to bottom, by year:

Division - Conference - NFL

It goes from 2001 to 2018...note that we won nothing in 2002 and 2008...hence the gaps.

AFC East titles in the top row, AFC titles in 2nd row, and SB titles in 3rd row.

Thanks, actually now that I see, (on my desk top) it's quite clever too!

Hope you have more room on your wall!
