With free agency and the draft taking the focal point, all the attention has turned into the 2019 season and i felt that it couldn't hurt to give a shout out for the absolutely amazing accomplishment this team achieved.

To rise from last year's bitter disappointment and to win it this year was the pinnacle of the Patriot Way.

Players will get cut, others will not be re-signed, rookies will join the team and so will free agents. The team will be very different next season.

So here's to those players that helped us win the Super Bowl and won't be here next season: Thank you and good luck for the rest of your career!

Yep, that narrative was being trotted out when we were 9-5.

"No team has lost the Super Bowl and gone on to win the next year, and this year's New England Patriots are no different"

Crickets now....

I came across a December newspaper this morning when I was starting the woodstove. It was right after the Miami debacle. Nobody thought this team had a shot. Defense was a mess, 2 losses in December, etc. And yet, this team found a way to win again. Unbelievable.

I posted at the time that this team reminded me of the 1968-69 Celtics ( yes I am THAT old). They were a champion ( multiples) that limped into the playoffs with their worst record in years ( 48-34 IIRC) yet won it all by gutting it out.....
Unlike that Celtics team, their GOAT retired while the PAtriots' GOAT is still going like the Everyready bunny......

I remember reading an autobiography of Wayne Gretzky when I was a kid, and he talked about the first time he made it to the finals, they lost. He said it's one of the hardest feelings he can imagine, because of all the work you put in, and how LONG the season is, not only to come up short but then to realize you have to start all over again from scratch. That team ended up overcoming it because of the leadership on the team keeping everyone focused, and I think that's the most underrated strength of a BB/Brady led team. Not the X's and O's, but the ability to tune everything else out when it's time to work.

2018 was definitely a very weird team. They outright stunk at times, looked absolutely dominant at other times, lost what was becoming their #1 wideout right before the playoffs, could not stop the run late in the season, struggled on the road, and dealt with a quarterback injury... then they turned it on. I think if we look at that team objectively, we would have to put them up there with (recent memory) the 2006 Colts and 2012 Ravens as odd teams to go on to win... even with the bye.

I always forget this....can you remind me tomorrow?

this should be on a loop that posts to Felcher's twitter and e-mail every single day

For all these reasons, this is actually one of my favorite SB teams. Not that they were the best but between rebounding from the SB loss to flat out sucking at times, to bringing in Gordon because they weren't good enough then losing Gordon and having to find a way. Then factor in one of the tougher playoff runs (in terms of opposing record in the playoffs) and it was quite the story. Hopefully this isn't the last but if it is, it's a worthy wrap up to the Super Dynasty.

And, yeah, I do remember poor Dion Lewis and "You know what happens when you go cheap? You (get your ass kicked) WIN THE SUPER BOWL".

I was re-watching some of the playoff run from last year and I started thinking about Lewis. He also talked about how soft the Pats were, something to the effect that if you get physical with them they'll fold. He couldn't have been more far off.

Interesting stat: The last three times the Patriots have lost in the playoffs, the following year they've won it all.

2013: lost to Denver in the AFCCG; won the SB in 2014
2015: lost to Denver in the AFCCG; won the SB in 2016
2017: lost to Philly in the Super Bowl; won the SB in 2018

Not a bad pattern.

I can't find it anywhere but I remember a Bill Russell interview where he described his pregame speech before Game 7 in the Finals that year: "Gentlemen, it is not possible for us to lose this game".

So who do we lose to next year to set up a SB 55 win?
