Rainman is monitoring you too.

At first I picked P Mahomes, but went back and picked D Brees.

Reasoning is that Tyrek Hill is a good as Mike Thomas. Secondary WRs are virtually equal. Saints run game is better with Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram but Mahomes had Kareem Hunt for most the season. Coaching is equal to me though i might give a slight edge to Payton.

The difference maker is Kelce. This season he is the best TE. All Brees has is Ben Watson in that department.

Normally I’d think Mahomes is a favorite to win it but I think there will be a sentiment to give Brees an MVP or at least have them share one as he hasn’t gotten one yet.

Kind of like a “lifetime achievement award”. This is why I never doubted Brady would get it last year even with a healthy Wentz.

Mahomes has been consistently awesome. Brees has had like 3 stinkers. Mahomes should run away with it.

Mahomes has more talent. Kelce is like another Mike Thomas for Brees.

Brees is 40 playing at this level and Mahomes has plenty of MVPs ahead if this keeps up.

I am a Saints fan so bias - and I don't even mind if Mahomes wins it over Brees, both are clearly deserving, however -

This is basically the same exact scenario that played out in 2011 with Rodgers and Brees. Brees had better volume numbers and led a historically good offense (they broke the team offensive yardage record that year) but Rodgers had one more win and better efficiency numbers.

Now we're seeing nearly the same situation, only with Brees on the other side of the debate, and yet it seems like most people feel like Mahomes is the favorite. I just hate the inconsistency of that.

Brees has been deserving of serious MVP consideration 7 times in his career: 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 and this year. And it seems like every time he's in the conversation the argument shifts. One year it's because volume stats aren't good enough. The next it's because efficiency isn't good enough. The next is because the other guy's team had one more win than his team. The next is because his hairline has receded too much, or some other damn thing.

Having said that, the only one that he egregiously got shorted on was 2009 when he was clearly better than Manning by every measure. The second that SB ended I think the voters went "whoops, we messed up" so if Brees does get it this year it'll be at least partly a makeup call.

I empathize with you. I was furious when Manning won in 09 over Brees. Not only that, but the vote was a landslide. Making it worse, Manning had just won the MVP in 08 in easily the most unimpressive “MVP season” ever. It wasn’t even an average season for him.

The Peyton Manning Sports Writers of America screwed up some league history with their groupie fanaticism. His career was good, and he should have roughly the same amount of MVPs as Brady, Rodgers, and Brees. It shouldn’t be 5-0 over Brees, that’s for sure.

If Mahomes doesn't win he can always quit and get a job as an Indian butler...yeah, change his name to Mahat Macoat..

Yeah but he’s also dealing with a new set of rules that makes putting up these types of numbers seem like a walk in the park comapared to years past.

I also don’t think brees has ever had as much talent surrounding him. He’s had good teams, but he’s always been closer to Brady in regards to elevating the players around him, and making them look better. Well him and Sean Payton.

Yeah but look at the divisional teams he gets to face this year. All are bottom half in the league.

Since Mahomes has to play QB for a team without a defense, and plays against teams with a better record in a stronger conference, I'd have to go with him. However, due to the NFC bias that exists in the NYFL, I don't think he has a chance and Brees will win.

First, since some want to put Aaron Donald into the MVP conversation, let me throw this out there. The Chicago Bears have only played 4 teams the entire season with winning records and played all of them at home. They have an opponents record 0f 94-128-1, easily the worst in the entire NYFL. And if you throw out their top two opponents, the Rams and Pats, that record drops to an astounding 72-120-1. IOW, Da Bears are the paper tigers of the league.

Now for Mahomes vs Brees.

I think you're talking about Khalil Mack.

Yes I was thinking of Mack, thank you. Someone here used them both in a response and I (easily) got confused.

Merry Christmas

Sometimes a disagree doesn't need explanation. He just disagrees with your post. Doesn't owe you a why

I mock thee!

I’m not sure that Brady would have been awarded the MVP with a healthy Wentz. In that case, it could’ve been a reverse lifetime achievement dynamic at play, in the fact that Brady had won some prior and Wentz arguably had a better year.

How many has Brees won? Any? If he hasn’t won any yet, then I think he at least splits it this year.

Wentz was the MVP favorite at around 50% when he got injured with a few weeks left. Brady was a close second at around 33%. The field made up the rest. Immediately after Wentz's injury, Brady shot up as the clear leader. Had Wentz played the whole season, I think Wentz would have won the award as well. Tiebreakers usually go to the guys who haven't won it before, unless you're Peyton Manning; in that case you just win the award whether you deserve it or not.

Interesting note is that in 2015, Brady was the MVP favorite at about 75% through week 10. That's about as big a lead I've ever seen at that point in the season. However, Chris Harper's muff and a bunch of injuries happened. Lewis and Edelman got hurt, Gronk was limping around, and the team fell apart (it was later reported they couldn't even run practices because the offense was so banged up.) Cam Newton went on absurd run and ran away with the MVP. That was a frustrating loss because Brady had it won if the team around him stayed even relatively healthy. And you just knew Newton was having an outlier season and isn't actually a great, MVP-worthy QB.

Brady also would have won in 2016 if either (a) he had actually played the whole season and not been suspended for an event that didn't happen, or (b) Matt Ryan didn't pull a Cam Newton himself and play way better than he actually is, due to a dizzying array of weapons and Kyle Shannahan's play calling. Once again, it was clear the better player didn't win the award. The point I always point to for Brady over Ryan in 2016: Brady won 11 games; Ryan won 11 games. Brady was forced to miss 4 games. 2016 also marked the only time in recent history the The Sporting News and Associated Press chose a different MVP/OPOY with Brady beating Ryan handily in Sporting News voting. That vote is made by the coaches and should probably be used as the “official” MVP regardless. Brady also won handily at Pro Football Focus who accounted for his missed games.

Sporting News NFL Player of the Year Award - Wikipedia

I truly believe for that reason Brady should get credit for MVP as the AP is just sports writers while the actual coaches got it right. Ryan ain’t nothing special and that’s been apparent since his golden supporting cast went away.

Newton and Ryan are both cases where a decent quarterback can put up incredible numbers for 16 games under perfect circumstances. Neither of them are MVP-level players. Both Brady (and Rodgers) were far better in both seasons.

This is really going to be a close vote between Mahomes and Brees. It's 41-39 Mahomes right now on PatsFans. I imagine the actual MVP voters will be down the middle as well. The oddsmakers are spot on having this as a toss up with a slight edge to Mahomes. I don't know if there's bias on this board or not; I do get the sense there's some salt for Mahomes because he's in our conference and the prospect of going to Arrowhead, but I think overall this a pretty objective poll with neither player being on a hated rival or anything.

Mahomes is having a great season and I think it’s very close with Brees, but I’d have to give it to Patrick.
With that said the teams will eventually adjust to Mahomes next year and I don’t expect him to get wild again.

Mahomes, Hill and Chris Jones are all stuck in cheap money contracts too.

Baker Mayfiled is guaranteed nearly twice what Mahomes will receive over the length of their deals. Kelce earned more than Mahomes, Hill and Jones combined this season.

I expect Brees to win it in a close vote due to the Saints being the top team in the league and his efficiency stats being so strong. That said, if Brees sits out most of last game and Mahomes has a 3 TD, 300 yard type effort the disparity in volume stats may be too much for some voters to ignore. The MVP, much like the Heisman moves frequently in the final weeks of the season and Brees has been more of a complementary piece the past month or so.

Brees - hosed big time in 2009 at the height of the Manning love fest.
Brees should not have won it in 2011 against Rogers. Packers led the league in scoring and were clearly the top regular season team. Rogers had virtually the same number of TD's and less INT's. Am a big fan of Brees but 2009 is his only legitimate gripe. He had poorly timed great years and was deservedly in top 2 or 3 several times but besides 2009 the voting was fair.
