Let’s point out that both would be obvious MVP choices almost any other year, including last year when TB12 won it despite a pretty standard season for him. If Mahomes wins it, that’ll be some real snake bitten luck for Brees, and even though the award is in reality pretty lame, I do think Brees legacy is moderately different with one versus without one. Brees also was runner up to Rodgers historic 2011 season and Manning’s robbery in 2009 (Brees clearly deserved it over the media darling.). This would be another really bad beat for Brees and may be his last chance. All that said, Patrick Mahomes is more deserving of the 2018 MVP in my opinion, and while I wouldn’t say it’s a no brainer or they aren’t close, I think Mahomes deserves it beyond a reasonable doubt.

How can it be Donald if the defense still sucks with or without him? He’s great no doubt, but tough to argue he’s most valuable if their defense sucks. I had Brees but, these last few weeks he’s lost it. It’s Mahomes, no doubt. He’s been consistently awesome.

It’s like those “showdown” games between prime JJ Watt and prime Tom Brady when they went head-to-head multiple times with all the fake hype. That display was a glaring reminder of why Brady is immeasurably more valuable than Watt. A defensive player is simply not capable of effecting the outcome of a game like a quarterback (or possibly a skill player with a ton of touches.).

Applied to this year, suppose Brees or Mahomes got injured. The point spread would change by at least 7 points. If Donald or Mack got injured, it might move one point. That’s the cold reality for those barking about defensive players being deserving. As long as the rules are the way they are, the MVP is rightfully to the guy directly impacting the results of every play his unit is on the field. QB play correlates significantly to wins and losses; one individual defensive player does not, or very little.

For me it is an easy decision as of today. Brees has had a great season and he is due.

I thought Bree's would keep piling on the stats but has sputtered a bit coming down the stretch, I voted for the Headband he's been lights out.

Mahomes....love watching him play...he is FEARLESS...and the future of the NFL...

ONLY 16 total starts...and I think he has 50 TD’s in his first 16 starts???

Quantam is an absolute clown. I see him going around disagreeing with posts, and he never says why. I await the clowns disagree/dislike on this post

Not only would I pick Aaron Donald over either of them for MVP, I'd also pick Khalil Mack over either of them.

If the question is instead posed as "which QB had the more impressive 2018?", I'd take Mahomes. That's an all time QB season we're talking about.
Brees is having a ridiculously efficient season in the vein of 2010, 2014-17 Brady and if it were Brady we would absolutely be saying he deserves MVP and that it's actually statistically more impressive than what Mahomes did because of this or that, probably involving turnovers.

Idk. Brees in 2018 has certainly been impressive as **** and much better than what we've gotten out of our passing game this year but I still think Mahomes has put on more of a show for an equally successful team. His turnovers are by no means a problem so having more picks than Brees isn't a real blemish.

If I had to choose which one I want in a big game, it's Brees hands down, so it's all just a matter of what your question really is. Like I said, my top 2 MVPs play defense so it's irrelevant. There's been some seriously great individual performances this year and it's a shame none of them except maybe Gilmore were for the Patriots. Perhaps the postseason can make none of that matter.

Merry Christmas folks. I'm going to stop putting off going to sleep now. I've rambled long enough.

Passing yards seem to me like a pretty irrelevant stat and are more a product of passing attempt volume. It can sometimes work against you, where lower passing yardage is due to higher efficiency and better offensive production. As an example, Tom Brady has passed for 4000+ yards every full season (not 2008 or 2016) since 2007. The one exception? He passed for 3900 yards in 2010; he was also the league’s only unanimous MVP in the award’s history. His stats that year are pretty similar to Brees this year. However, part of Brees success is a dominating running game featuring Kamara, whereas Brady really carried that offense that lacked a superstar anywhere. Overall point, though, is that passing yards are not very relevant to performance.

Mahomes has 281 rushing yards, 4.6 per attempt. That’s a lot of rushing yards for a QB approaching 50 TD passes.

The narrative that Mahomes has not been clutch or hasn’t played well in big games is really idiotic, as has been pointed out in this thread. On the flip side, Brees has SIX fourth quarter comebacks (wow), although that’s another stat that also is pretty dependent on the number of opportunities, as well as some other variables subject to luck (defense, etc.)

Both are really deserving, though I still consider Mahomes to be having an out-of-this-universe season they may be the best by a QB ever, while Brees is having a phenomenal, normally MVP shoo-in season.

Exactly

If you don’t think Mahomes is the hands down MVP you don’t understand what you’re watching.

I understand Football ,,I may not agree on your choice only because it's close between 3 ,,,Mahomes,,Brees and Donald.
In the end it's a football opinion ,,all 3 deserve it.
Best to all,,,Merry Christmas and a Happy New year in advance.
GO PATS

I don't know I did that !! My message included in the quote.
Anyways I know you all know it was me.

Mahomes is basically dealing with the same crappy defense that Brees had when Brees missed the playoffs with 7-9 records 3 straight years in a row. Difference is Mahomes has his team #1 overall right now. Now all of a sudden, Brees gets a very good d and has an excellent running game and he's all of a sudden MVP? C'mon man.

Brees because simply I like this guy :)

The real question that needs to be asked is, who is your choice of MVP when Mahomes Throws 2 interceptions against Oakland and drops a 3rd game in a row, thus losing HFA to the NEW #1 seeded patriots....

That’s the real question that needs to be asked you PATRIOTS FANS....

Yeah but he’s also dealing with a new set of rules that makes putting up these types of numbers seem like a walk in the park comapared to years past.

I also don’t think brees has ever had as much talent surrounding him. He’s had good teams, but he’s always been closer to Brady in regards to elevating the players around him, and making them look better. Well him and Sean Payton.

Legacy always takes a role in MVP voting, and with that in mind gotta go with Brees.

I am a Saints fan so bias - and I don't even mind if Mahomes wins it over Brees, both are clearly deserving, however -

This is basically the same exact scenario that played out in 2011 with Rodgers and Brees. Brees had better volume numbers and led a historically good offense (they broke the team offensive yardage record that year) but Rodgers had one more win and better efficiency numbers.

Now we're seeing nearly the same situation, only with Brees on the other side of the debate, and yet it seems like most people feel like Mahomes is the favorite. I just hate the inconsistency of that.

Brees has been deserving of serious MVP consideration 7 times in his career: 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 and this year. And it seems like every time he's in the conversation the argument shifts. One year it's because volume stats aren't good enough. The next it's because efficiency isn't good enough. The next is because the other guy's team had one more win than his team. The next is because his hairline has receded too much, or some other damn thing.

Having said that, the only one that he egregiously got shorted on was 2009 when he was clearly better than Manning by every measure. The second that SB ended I think the voters went "whoops, we messed up" so if Brees does get it this year it'll be at least partly a makeup call.

Mahomes. Plus, he’ll probably fold under the pressure of being MVP AND having HFA ;)
Also, he has NO defense. NO pun intended.
