It represents more than an 11% increase in scoring from 2007, so yes it's significant. The point I'm making is that it is in reaction to the KC-LAR game, which was 54-51 and people were saying, "This is the end of football as we know it." And I'm like, it's a field goal more per team. It's not like every game is being played in the 50s or even 40s or even 30s. SOME are, but there are lots of games that aren't. I mean on Thanksgiving there were six teams playing. Two scored in the 30s (Dal 31, NO 31), two scored in the 20s (Chi 23, Was 23), and two scored in the teens (Atl 17, Det 16). They scored on average among the six of them, 23.5 points.

It just doesn't seem like we're experiencing the end of football as we know it. Is scoring up? Obviously and objectively, YES. Nobody is disputing that. Nobody is disputing that the rules make it FAR easier to pass than ever before. But the reaction in this thread is to the insane KC-LAR game and that's still a crazy outlier.

I'm not into fantasy football, but do the plays being run now by offenses increase the fantasy numbers more than the defensive plays?

I agree that the game was an outlier because it featured two high scoring offenses and two porous defenses. Had I been a betting man I would have bet the house on the over.

But I still didn't like the game and can see why it would lead to a discussion of rule changes and officiating.

If you're waiting for rule changes designed to bolster defenses and restrain offenses, you'd better not be waiting under water if you don't have a snorkel. Ain't happening. I think the league, beginning with The Ginger Dope, LOVES games like this. I don't think it's ever going back. Now, whether or not fans will get immune to and/or bored with high-scoring, no defense circuses is still to be determined, but I wouldn't bet on it. What we're seeing is what we're getting from now on, in my opinion.

And like every large business, the NFL will inevitably move toward what it senses to be the most positive feedback from the largest customer base. Sophisticated fans of the game are not the NFL's largest customer base.

After giving it some thought, I enjoy high scoring games, but it matter how the points are scored. I want to see some form of defense on the field. Missed tackles are sometimes acceptable when facing an elusive guy but both teams let just about any ordinary running back have their way with them for massive yards pretty much every game. Bad run defense/tackling and ticky tack pass interference calls ruin games for me.

For example, I enjoyed the Saints vs Rams game much more. Superior offenses still made the defense look foolish at times but at least some plays were contested.

The production would be up a bit due to the rise in scoring, although that would be dependent upon the specific players that you had. For instance, if you have good players on lousy teams like A.J. Green or Odell Beckham, you’re probably not seeing much of a difference.
