I don't think Montana is automatically number 2

I don't think Montana is automatically number 2

Yes he is. Did you watch him play? He's WAY ahead of whoever's #3.
TB and Montana are in a separate class all their own.

I just think Montana is overrated with how much sick talent was around him.

I think Elway is underrated dragging those 80s Broncos teams to the Super Bowl kicking and screaming.

All I know is Brady is the clear cut number 1. The rest you can really argue

Yes, he had a lot of talent around him, no arguing that.
But I've been watching the NFL since early 60s. I can honestly say TB is the only qb ive seen greater than Montana.
I think it's a fairly big dropoff after montana to the #3 spot.

No way you put Brees ahead of Montana.
Not even close.
But Brees has a strong case for #3.

I don’t think Brees has a strong case for #3. A case, maybe but not a strong case. There are a few things against him. Losing seasons and win percentage, dome QB and only 1 super bowl. He’s a great QB but he’s not in my top 5.

Saints and Rams will be a fun game... but the saints look to be the best team in the nfl today.

No one is arguing that Brees has had a better career than Brady. The argument is that Brees is in the conversation for maybe the 2nd greatest QB of all time. People use his record to try and distance him in these conversations, but IMO he's top 3, maybe 2nd behind Brady. His defenses have been awful over the years though. Not his fault.

This is why stock markets crash, because people are unable to view a recent trend in an overall context and instead believe that what they see in front of them is absolute and won’t change.

Before the season, no one would have ranked Brees in the top 5 of all-time, but he’s dominating in one year (where the average QB rating has skyrocketed) and now we’re asking if he’s leapfrogged every quarterback in league history besides Brady?

By the time he’s Hall of Fame eligible or soon after that, all of his statistical records will be broken. We’re moving into the 6,000 yard season. It happened to Fouts, Marino, Favre, and Manning, and it will happen to Brees. He needs to win at least one more Super Bowl to even be seriously considered in top 5 ten years from now.

Coming into this year they had the same amount of TD passes and Brees has almost 100 more interceptions. Step for step???

And yet his career rating is .4 MORE than Tom's. He must be doing something right.

Like I said before, TB and Montana are in their own class, with TB clearly #1. And there's a significant dropoff after that to #3, imo.
I'd put Brees at #3, but Elway, Manning, Favre,Unitas,Staubach all have cases and there's others like Aikman and Marino.
Marino never won a ring but he's the best passer of a football I ever seen. If he played today, he'd probably own every qb record that exists. But there's more to being a great qb than just throwing.

Cool. I see you aren’t able to really appreciate having the greatest quarterback of all-time and understanding what that means.

A random statistical formula that creates a random number is more important than having similar statistical production BUT one player having 100 more interceptions, an average of over 5 each year?

Brees plays in a dome and in warm weather climates every game and gets garbage time opportunities all the time.

Seriously, smarten up and realize this isn’t homerism. The two aren’t close. Brees isn’t suddenly a top 3 all-time QB. You don’t go under the radar for 15-20 years and then suddenly become regarded as that due to an accumulation of stats.

Right. No homerism here Ice Ice Brady.

The notion that you think Brees has been under the radar for 20 years says it all about your though process.

Drew Brees is gunning for Brady's record for most pass TD's to a different receiver. I'm sure of it now.

Then show me a single post that you’ve made prior to this season that Brees is even remotely close to Joe Montana or even in the top 4-5 QBs ever? I think that my thought process is pretty sound, which isn’t that Brees has been a secret but that it would have seemed idiotic to put him this high on the all-time list BUT FOR the present moment and a whole 10-game stretch accounting for 99% of this opinion. You call me a homer, but I didn’t even start the Brady comparison. I think it’s ridiculous to suggest Brees is suddenly ahead of Montana, Staubach, Elway, Manning (as much as I hate saying this, it’s true), and arguably even Rodgers.

Right. 46TDs and 5476 yards is chickenshit. As is 5 seasons of better than 70 percent completion percentage. Something that Tom and Peyton have failed to accomplish even once. 73,800 yards passing all time, ~2K more than the nearest competitor and 5K more than Tom in one less season. Five times more than 5K passing yards in a seaon, the only player who's EVER had more than one season of 5K+

Staubach???? 153 career TDs and 109 INTs? 22K yards passing for his career? Playoff QB rating of 76?

Nobody is saying that TB12 isn't the GOAT, but you're embarrassing yourself.

Joe Montana retired with the highest passer rating of all-time in 1995 (92.3).

This season 20 players have a higher passer rating.

Brees is a great quarterback. I always thought that he’s a great quarterback. But he’s also never, at any point in his career, been considered to be the greatest quarterback playing, until arguably this year, for a period of about two weeks. That’s why these other players rank above him, because you aren’t the second best player of all-time when you aren’t even the second best of your own era (Brady, Manning, Rodgers have all been almost universally been ranked as better quarterbacks than Brees covering a period of 15+ years.)

And your own stats will eventually become your downfall because in 10-15 years guys like Matt Ryan and Matt Stafford will pass Brees, showing why you can’t just look at isolated stats without considering the massive difference in the eras. What Brees has done statistically for his time is no more impressive than what Fouts, Marino, or Manning did for theirs.

In the end, championships stand the test of time. They aren’t the only measure, but they’re important. Passing records have a shelf life of 5-10 years. Championship legacies and winning are historically significant, not just in the NFL but in all sports. You need those to have staying power near the top of an all-time rankings list.
