NE vs KC Pre-Watch

Looking at all those clips and realizing how many options Mahomes literally has on almost every play, I think it's important to understand that we're just not going to stop them. The only thing we can do is slow them down.

I'm starting to think that it's critical that we get our run game going right off the bat. What we want are long, grinding drives to keep the KC offense on the bench, and out of the game.

Here are my novice keys to the game:

1. Keep penalties to a minimum. KC doesn't need extra chances. Watched the KC games in which they had numerous drives extended because of penalties.

2. No turnovers. They don't need extra chances.

3. Dial up a few blind side CB/Safety blitzes. I'm hesitant with this but have seen Mahomes make some bad throws when pressured from his backside. Keep him from getting comfortable in the pocket. Although Mahomes has made some bad throws under pressure he's also burned the opposing team a few times. haha Got to be careful.

4. Favor the middle to the right side of the field defensively. I'll bet 75% of KC's throws have been to the middle or the right side of the field. They are still dangerous to the left but it's usually with a broken play scramble, a sweep or a screen. Mohomes doesn't seem to be as accurate or effective towards the left.

5. I agree with those that want to control the clock. Whether that's with short passes or the run it doesn't matter. But limiting KC's offensive plays or keeping them on the sideline would be nice.

6. The offense needs to stay patient and take the underneath stuff. KC likes to play a Cover 1/Cover 3 hybrid type zone/man "pattern matching" defensive scheme. From what I've read their LB's are their matchup weakness. Expect a heavy dose of Edelman and White to keep the chains moving. Although with their starting safeties out they may take a few shots down the field.

Mahomes is a nice young QB and is fun to watch play. He has an absolute cannon for an arm, can extend plays and is cool under pressure. I'd say his accuracy is average but has an arsenal of offensive weapons to get the ball to. The Pat's defense definitely have their work to do. Hopefully a few stops will be enough for Brady n crew. Should be a fun game.

I also see us running a lot of cover 3 pattern matching to try and control their versatility, but the problem is, that's the one coverage that requires the most communication. That's where we're going to really get tested.

I also am worried about them running the flood off PA. That's going to be hard on us, and if we let them get their run game going, I think we're going to see plenty of that.

This is the sort of game that Bentley would have shone in. I can only hope for a win via shootout. Brady has the mental grit to sustain a constant back and forth, I don't think Mahomes has that at this point in his career.

Interesting thread.

Go Pats

I think Chiefs are going to incorporate a good handful of mesh concept against us, especially when the Jags killed us with that.

I think you already said it correctly a few posts further up and I have been saying the same thing... it is about slowing them down.

I am not too concerned with all the bells and whistles that KC does on the offense because if the Pats D can avoid big plays they will have legit shots turning 7 points into 3 points in the redzone where everything is compressed and the windows are extremely tight.

What you want to avoid is gifting them TDs via big plays early on a drive. Make them walk down the field. That to me is the biggest key in the game apart from the obvious (turnovers, penalties...).

I am sure the GDT will be a total nuthouse because -- especially in the first 1.5 quarters -- I expect KC to walk down the field with "relative" ease. Winning two four point plays in your own redzone might already be enough to win this game.

This is what I am expecting, too.

Yep. Keep them off the field. Expect steady doses of Michel early on. If the big play is there, especially off PA, I expect they’ll take it but most of their routes will probably be slants, outs, short crossers, hitches, etc. to sustain longer drives and keep the chains moving.

Exactly- we want to keep the offense in front of us. Let them make short plays all day long. I don't think Mahomes has the patience to nickel and dime all day. He is too infatuated with the highlight reel. I've seen him pass up easy passes in favor of fitting the ball into tight windows.
