Belichick is scratching his head and thinking ahead how to handle a lot of free agents
after 2018. Why not invite the 4th ranked NCAA punter and the Big Ten Punter of
The Year to rookie camp on May 10th for a look see?

"28th-ranked"?

Based on distance-control & directional control? Or merely based on gross and net yardage - which don't reveal squat about a punter's effectiveness.

Yep, it's rare for top offenses to have top yardage punters, because they're less likely to be in position for the punter to just boom it from the 10.

If you look at everything together, Ryan was in the middle of the pack last year. He's not a liability by any means, but the rookie has a shot IMO.

He's a really good holder, too, right? Aside from that game against Philly, where a FG attempt may have been botched - but I'll never know for sure since my brain has mostly deleted those memory files.

There's a kind of "kludgey" metric out there somewhere (not PFF, for those who care) that combines %TB, % inside-20, %FC, %returned, %net yardage (and something else?) to generate a comparison ranking number. I've sorta half-***edly attempt to reverse-engineer the formula with marginal success. Short of breaking down film for each punt by where it was launched from and what the result was ...?

Anyway, Allen typically falls in the 6-10 range on that ranking. So, top 20%-30% in the league. In golf terms, he doesn't boom them off the tee very often, but his touch around the greens is consistently good.

Is Kanoff still out there?

Check this small school QB (transfer from Va. Tech) Connor Jessup. 6"4'" and 220 looks like a cannon for an arm.

Rated higher than Solver, McGough and Linehan.

Redskins as of this morning.
Would be curious to know if there’s a story there. Slower 40 time or not, would think he’d have been valued for passing sub packages vs. some of these undersized OLBs who aren’t edge rushers that we’re picked in latter rounds.

Inside the 20 is probably the only stat I look at when viewing punters. It may be shortsighted but if one of the new guys can do it better? welcome aboard. Don't think there's been a Pats punter ever I've been like, if we lose him it's curtains. Allen has been effective for us imo thus far. May the best player win.

Bentley and Sam were both ILB/MLB in college ... 6'1"-6'2", +/- 245 lbs, roughly the same as Mayo was. Were there a couple other guys who were drafted and I missed them?

The 28th ranked punter in the NFL, who has a contract up after 2018, has a reason
to be worried.

How do you rank a punter?

Allen has nothing to worry about, he has played really well for the Patriots.
