Ah, the QB frenzy (although that trade rumor is from prison...).

The last time I saw such a frenzy for so many...a couple of decades ago. 1999, top 3 picks were can't miss QBs.

1. Tim Couch to Cleveland

2. Donovan McNabb to Philadelphia

3. Akili Smith to Cincinnati

That was also the year that Mike the Nitwit Ditka traded his entire draft for Ricky Williams at #5.

So, that's Denver at #5 (1700) and Indy at #6 (1600) both trying to bail. Perhaps some competitive "deep discount pricing" on the way?

Not really a draft rumor, but it's crazy that the Colts got 2 good second round picks to move back 3 spots in the first round. I had forgotten about that but read it again today.

The Patriots claw tooth and nail to get those second round picks (even trading one for Jimmy G) and the Colts casually pick up two of them to move back 3 spots and probably get the same guy they would have taken anyway. Can't imagine what Belichick would do if he ever had a top 5 pick...

What led up to that Mayo pick makes for an interesting parallel.

In September 2006, BB had traded WR Deion Branch to Seattle for their 2007 first rounder, which turned out to be the #24 overall (WR Cooks -> #23 from the Rams). Going into the 2007 draft, then, BB had the #24 and #28 (the Pats own pick).

In 2007, BB used the #24 on Safety Brandon Meriweather, and traded the Pats own #28 pick forward - to the Niners for their 2008 1st-rounder and their 2007 4th (which was traded to Oakland for Randy Moss).

Aside from trading their 2nd-rounder (#60) and a 7th to Miami for Wes Welker, the rest of the Pats 2007 draft was pretty much a washout.

[SIDEBAR: BB also traded the Pats 2007 3rd-rounder (#91) forward for Oakland's 2008 3rd + and 2007 7th.]

Anyway, that 2008 1st from the Niners ended up being the #7 over all, AND the Pats only 1st-rounder after Goodell confiscated the Pats own pick (#31) in the "Spygate" penalty.

BB traded the Niners' 2008 #7 to NOLA for their #10 and their 2008 3rd (#78, used to select Shawn Crable, unfortunately).

The Bengals turned down the Saints' entire draft to stay put and draft Akili Smith, too. Which is, well, it's something.

Trying to find an article I read the other day which, I think, adds a lot of perspective to BB's slightly modified team-building (going after high-draft early round disappointments to see if he can rejuvenate their careers and find that promise). he's always done this, but it sees like a lot more now - McLellan, Van Noy, Mattews, Cooper, Ealy, etc...or even trading his 1st-round pick for a 4th-year Cooks.

The article said that the new, limited practice rules are putting rookies a couple of years behind the previous curve. If that's the case, does BB want to exercise a ton of draft picks, or would he rather staff the team with low-cost vets?

However most teams wont trade up or down til they see what the board looks like.
