I just got back from an alternate universe: Amendola to Brady completion

I just don’t want our 40+ year old QB catching passes. Other than the obvious risk it tells me you’re desperate and you’re not good enough to beat the other team straight up.

He’s the freaking GOAT- why do they need the bag of tricks? Let lesser teams try that stuff.

I'm not sure if the Eagles are a "lesser team" since they beat us, but they tried it and it worked. If Brady had caught and converted and we had won, that play would have been highlighted in NFL Films for the next 20 years.

And the same is true if a defender closed in and trucked a 40 year old QB who is slow as molasses and doesn’t have the slide protection. Or he landed awkwardly and blew out an ACL in a freak accident. It’s happened before. Just a really dumb risk to take imo.

I'm with you there, I'm just saying that trick plays are fine as long as they work Not a sign of a lesser team by any means. Maybe some trick plays are better than others.

I wasn’t trying to imply the Eagles were a lesser team- they’re the new champs and beat us...I just think we are good enough with the GOAT to not need stuff like that.

The play is fine but wasn't necessary. What about that Eagles defense makes anyone think Brady couldn't move the ball by passing it? They had no trouble moving it all night with Brady.

There were only two drives in the first half they didn't score. One was this trick play drive and subsequent failed 4th down try.

The other was after Brady drove them 68 yards through the air and then they ran 3 running plays which failed to gain a first down.

The only time they didn't score was when the coaches took the ball out of Brady's hands. There's no reason to try plan C or D when plan A is working.

I had a much bigger problem with the jet sweep in the red zone on 3rd and short. I also have absolutely no idea what Cooks was thinking there. That play plus the play where he got taken out of the game made me think he was playing with a concussion before then and everyone just missed it.

The problem with those 2 play-calls is less about why they were used than it is about WHEN they were used. Skippy should never, Ever, EVER have called EITHER of those plays on 3RD FECKIN DOWN.
3rd down inside Philly's 10, 1-1/2 ytg, and Skippy calls for...a jet sweep to Cooks? WHY?!? Why not just give the ball to Bolden after Cooks draws another weak-side defender to the strong side, leaving no DB available to shoot a gap, and have him run off LT where Solder & Thuney had one defender blocked and Andrews the other? Momentum alone would've given him a first down. And even if either plays - both the actual and the imagined - doesn't work, then why, when the ball is barely one yard away from the line to gain, does Bill & Skippy not go for the damn 1st down? Feckin gutless...and I don't even want to begin to discuss Cookie's "effort" during his attempt at the conversion.
And just before the 3rd/5 Amendola pass, Dion Lewis had just gained 5 yards on 2/10 from Philly's 40. Bill & Skippy must have decided that they were now in 4-down territory. Why not give it again to Lewis, behind Develin and off-Tackle, perhaps on a quick count, attack their lighter DEs, then see where you are on 4th down, if you haven't already made 1st down? The worst-case option is that a FG attempt has likely just been made easier.
Pats should've attacked Philly's DEs on BOTH 3rd-down plays with Dion Lewis (who was NOT on the field for EITHER play), establish a tougher attitude, move the chains, and THEN Bill & Skippy could've called the 2 trick plays on 1st down, when Philly's defense might've been caught napping even deeper. Not having the Cat available on either 3rd-down situation was just plain ******ed.

I had no problem with the playcal. They did it before. They felt comfortable with it. It worked before.

both of the cooks plays made me think that he was trying to do too much--going for the big play instead of just taking what was there. it reminded me of mcdaniels on the sideline during SB LI telling his players, "don't try to get it all back on one play, just play it one play at a time."
.

Yeah, look, while Brady "dropped" the SB pass, it was clearly at the edge of his range unlike the 2015 pass. Like the 2015 pass, no one was in the area.

Unfortunately, that is the reason QBs throw the ball and not WRs. Can't expect Danny or any wideout who hasn't played QB since high school to make a perfect pass.

And ironically, giving him sticky gloves that make those catches easy for receivers would be a bit of a tip-off.

The rules are, if it works, you are not allowed to have a problem with a playcall. If it doesn't work, you are required to.

I kid I kid.

Playcalling to me means very little. Comes down to execution most of the time
