Central Thread For Mourning/Canonizing Jimmy Garoppolo

Gosh that sure is a warm welcome. What on earth is wrong with you? you watch brady move in the past few games minus the steelers and he was very wooden, he was hurt therefore he was wooden.
Remove the stick from your ass and if you dont furnish my threads with your radiant wisdom im sure ill get over it. And yes real football is what you call soccer, but american football is what this site is about.
Please wind your neck in.

Thank you for enlightening me on the game I have followed for decades. That aside, and despite your insults, I am going to remain with my original opinion on the purpose of your sudden appearance.

It is counter productive to actually engage or feed trolls, other than the purpose of exposing them. So, in order to not give you the negative responses that you are attempting to elicit, this will be my final post on the matter. I will conclude with two pertinent points.
1. If I am incorrect in my assumption of you, which will be made clear over time, I will be most forthcoming in my apology (although I sincerely doubt it will be required)
2. I find it most unusual that in response to my post that you make no reference to my suspicion that you are a Yinzer.
In your defense, it was a tough loss.

Oh man, not another freaking troll?

Anyway, I believe that Tom prefers to be described as "statuesque".

That was Brady in 2013 and early 2014. Once he dropped back to pass, he wouldn't run, even if there were free yards right in front of him.

why? because once you have 5-10 million in your bank account do you really need more? surly waiting a couple of years and then taking over a successful team would be appealing. also if he had failed at the 49ers he would have been in a pickle, they would have gone back to drafting a top QB and jimmy would be left out to dry unless he returned to pats
Honestly this has got to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard today. Do billionaires donate all of their money until they have a small fraction left? Why doesn't Tom Brady only play for 2 million a year - he already has plenty of money. Would you consider any athlete seeking to have more than 10 mill in their bank account to be greedy or selfish? Money is awesome and players, even the all time greats, will NOT play for 5, 6 million on a team that they can't start in for a few years at the very least, and when other teams will likely be offering at least 20 million more. That's a LOT of money - something that Jimmy hasn't even earned yet. Remember that he's been playing off a rookie contract so far; that extra ~14-15 mill, that you claim he doesn't need, is at least 5x more money than he's earned over his career. And its also really problematic to think that he'd be willing to wait a couple more years to take over the Patriots - who might not even be as successful by the time he has an opportunity to start - when he's already sat numerous years on the bench for the Patriots. Should a QB who feels that he has Top 10 potential choose not to help his team win? Why should he consider the scenario of being "left out to dry" with the 49ers if he: first, considers himself to be a starting QB and second, could do the EXACT same thing with New England? There's a lot of problems with the assumptions you make about players in the NFL.

Hi, im fairly new to Footbal (soccer as you call it) been following pats for two years now. Living in Yorkshire, England the Patriots are my nearest team by mileage.

Anyway, could we have not offered J Garoppolo say 5mil a year just to be a back up for a year, With the salcap going up by about 8 mil next year we could afford it. Or was he unhappy at not playing ?
You likely haven’t been informed that our Head Coach is on the Autism spectrum, so Jimmy was likely unable to communicate well enough with Bill to get the raise he wanted.

Hi, im fairly new to Football (soccer as you call it)

Actually it was the English who came up with the word Soccer for European football.

European Football -> Rugby Football (Rugby England) -> US Rugby -> American Football

In England "Rugger" was short for Rugby football and "Soccer" was short for Association football.

The Real Reason Americans Call It 'Soccer' Is All England's Fault

You can blame us for dumping your tea but you can't blame us for the word soccer.

i know he could have got more money but being offered say 5-8mil next year and then 20+ years after . Surley would rather be in the pats winning team than the 49ers. Just a thought. I would rather of kept Jimmy but i assume Kraft told bill to trade jimmy and not tom.
Tom is starting to look a bit wooden and i HOPE its his tendon injury

Jimmy can't sit on the bench not knowing when Brady was going to retire. Brady is still playing at an elite level despite what the "cliff" believers think.

unfortunately not really an option.

we could either franchise him at 20+ mil a year, or watch some other team offer him 15-20 mil a year.

In a perfect world, we offer him a contract worth 5mil base, and incentives that go up to 20 mil, but that still eats a ton of cap each year.

They waited a long time so, obviously, they were trying to work something out. As has been said, he could have gotten more money and a chance to start, so they didn't have much leverage.

He didn’t sit the whole time

But yeah, I’m not an athlete so my thought process on this is not valid
How many plays was he on the field for during the Squealers game?

Actually, yes. And if you get a $10,000,000 contract for a year you'll be doing well to end up banking even a couple of mill at the end of the year. You seem to have no idea of the cost structures (agents, accountants, lawyers, all off the top, plus high tax brackets, expenses for personal trainers, etc.) that mean much of the money is gone before you even get to pay the rent and buy groceries.

So that's for this year. NFL means Not For Long. That's your earnings duration. Average career is something like three years. Career ending injury is just one bad hit away. Apart from that, what's the post-NFL earnings potential, and how long before it gets eroded by CTE? Or worse, you retire disabled like Shazier seems likely to do? Your savings should be able to sustain your lifestyle, including healthcare, for the rest of your life expectancy. How many years, how much cash?

Ten or twelve years ago I spent a brief post-divorce career detour selling retirement planning. At that time, assuming realistic rates of return and cash flow needs in retirement I figured the average Joe needed about four or five million in savings to retire at normal retirement age (mid sixties) and sustain a normal middle class lifestyle through their projected life expectancy. That's with the mortgage paid off, kids college expenses done, no lavish lifestyle.

For a pro athlete, with unique health challenges, early retirement, it needs to be a lot more. Also, I remember reading a newspaper article about how Harold Carmichael, WR for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s, had to have his house built on only one level because he hurt too much to handle stairs after he retired. Costs like that need to be covered somehow too.

Seems like big bucks to you and me, but look closer and it's not so pretty.

I'm just glad we don't call it "footie".

Only thing stopping him from becoming an elite QB for years to come is his durability.

And no, me saying that doesn't mean I want Brady gone. This forum sometimes...

Did they do snow angels?

I think JG doing well does help mute the moronic “system QB” talk that we always hear.

They waited a long time so, obviously, they were trying to work something out. As has been said, he could have gotten more money and a chance to start, so they didn't have much leverage.

There actually was a point last summer when the Pats had enough 2017 cap space left to rollover, which - when combined with expected new cap space in 2018 - would have been enough to franchise JG and still have plenty left to deal with extensions and FA signings.

Then, the injuries started to pile up and the bankroll started to dwindle. By the time the trade deadline rolled around in wk-8, it was clear the Pats couldn't finance keeping JG for another season, so they traded him.

As it stands now, in wk-15, the Pats have about $25M in cap space tied up on IR and less than $3.3M in cap space to cover NLTBE bonuses and other incentives, and to cover for any further injuries.
