Rapp: Bennett exit . real possibility

I definitely see your point of view, but I think Edelman realizes he has built a brand and following here that would be tough to rebuild elsewhere. I'm sure a few mil extra could ease his concern though.

If I recall correctly I think the Bears and Giants expressed interest in him when he was a free agent.

He could expand his brand with a team like the Giants out in NYC.. but unless the Pats totally insult him, he should be a Patriot until he retires... he's someone that should just get a raise just because.. he has completely outperformed his contract

He's been getting bent over his entire career as far as compensation as an NFL WR that produces as much as he does, as consistently as he does.. and he played a vital role in both of his SB victories with clutch catches

May or may not get a comp depending who we sign/lose.

But yeah :

Sure it's his right but those making millions shouldn't compare their situations to those making thousands.

I don't TwitFace, but I expect he's going to get killed for that tweet. But again, that's why TwitFace is a double-edged sword; great and all but say the wrong thing and the chickens will come home to roost.

Bok bok.

Absolutely no chance he is back. Especially after the tweets. Patriots don't put up with that.

Haha. Again : who knows ? Gut has been saying "gone" for weeks. But who really knows ? A tweet in the offseason won't ruin things in NE. But his age + what he will probably command on the open market will most likely make this thing a one year funfest.

Was there a more obvious one-year rental than him? Be happy we got what we did and move on.

He can work on his children's books in Jacksonville.

When you look at the lowlife scum that are NFL owners and overall management, I will never again criticize a player for getting the most $$$ they can get. Go Marty!

(I'm also hoping for a barnburning, catastrophic outcome when the CBA expires in 2020, but I know the players will just cave entirely after 2 weeks, so too bad.)

While I don't begrudge athletes for taking the coin, I will make a huge amount of money less in my lifetime than I could have, because I chose to stay in one state over another for other reasons. So, Mr. Bennett can kiss either ass cheek for his comment.

Love Bennett but I think he should go with the money. He did everything he we hoped for a year and really helped them win #5, but this is his last shot for big money and it isn't coming here. He's on the backside of his career but he's a #1 for many teams and he should make the most of that while he can.

I respect Bennett's decision. He has 5 years more of decent football at least, make coin while you can, expand your brand. You are a good one!

I took less money several times just to take jobs I really liked. But that's just me, and Teddy Bruschi.

I always chose the prudent financial decision whether it was job or not

To me it was a matter of providing best I could for others

I think it's stupid to suggest whether or not someone should take less money

It is likely the pats would not have won without him

If he goes for more money, all that should remain is the memory and the thank you for a good year that he gave us.....for short money

Ehh.. he's a glib huggable version of Revis. He served a need admirably and helped the team win a championship but he's too old to throw money at.

I'd rather address TE via the draft and reasonable free agency signings.

He was a warrior for us all year. He helped bring us number five. Will have good memories of him. I wish him well elsewhere

As the year progressed I started to see him getting a little more comfortable with his personality. Truthfully I think that part of him would turn into bad memories. I like Bennett the player. Since the sibling apples don't fall far from the tree. I think there is a little too much Michael in him
I posted this yesterday before his twitter rant. Now I feel good about him moving on. I feel every player has the right to get a fair contract that he believes he is worth. This guy is too volatile to give a multi year contract too

Still not anyone else's place to tell him what job to take and what to ask for.

What about Amendola? He takes less every year to stay. Same as TB in some ways. Edelman would take less to stay here. Bennett should go ask them personally of they would take a pay cut. Bet he wouldn't have the balls to do that.

See the big problem, or creation of this athletic entitlement is the media/public reaction of " No problem, go get yours!!", instead of ripping them for being morons to leave a great situation for more money. All of the Boston media should tweet him and say "See ya and enjoy being miserable elsewhere. We'll enjoy our Brady's and Amendoals etc."

TB could have left at any time to max out every contract. He didn't and he knew why. I wonder if Shane Vereen would trade half his current contract for another ring right about now.

This is another reason why it's a bit more difficult here to bring in higher priced, outside talent on a team who takes pride in the fact that many of their core players have chosen to take less in order to see the bigger picture.

It can be done in the right setting under the right circumstances (Revis, Bennett) when certain opportunities present themselves, but I think things become much different when trying to project a longer term fit.

No, it's not, but as a professional athlete he should expect the fans to feel that way, particularly in this region on this team when others have done so.

In other words, he could use a brush up on his patience skills. Had he made the same point in a less-abrasive manner, everyone would likely agree with him. Instead, he was over the top and came off looking arrogant.

He definitely had interest... but he did not have an offer. No one is going to meet Julian Edelman and not come away somewhat impressed. But the fact that he had new offer tells you how different the scenario that is compared to the riches that will be thrown Martellus Bennett's way in a few months.

And here is what brings us to the reality of what happens in New England. Julian Edelman probably has one or two good years left in him. Sadly, he is due for another injury or drop off in performance. His peak earning days are pretty much in the rearview at this point. Bill does not pay for past performance.
