Montana: Can't Call Brady Best Ever

Montana is highly overrated

I'd like to push that guy to the ground

Lock him up... lock him up...

Perfectly legitimate argument, as long as he means it. It's why I've suggested people start talking about "Best in the Super Bowl era", which would get rid of the problem of dealing with the pre-film guys. Starr and Unitas would get screwed, but that's what asterisks are for. If you do that, you start with just 4 "locks" at the very top

Brady
Montana
Staubach
Young

instead of waiting until #9 before getting into any real discussion.

I somewhat felt the same way - though I thought Joe could have been a bit more proactive and gracious with the very clear 5th Super Bowl ring being achieved.

But the thing is, he's right that it's not his place to declare himself #1 or #2 (anymore than Brady should or would)

That's pretty much true - making it a bit of an awkward situation

He deflected the question plain and simple. He really belittled the question by saying Brady has had a good career.. what? He is salty.. no question.

Lots of over-sensitivity here. Joe is entitled to his opinion as is everyone. Both are legendary QBs on Mt. Rushmore and deserve respect. Stop trying to be offended by every piece of clickbait out there and realize these two guys are the greatest QBs to ever put on pads.

Yes I agree Brady has been classier in this debate than Montana has, but I give Montana credit for admitting his teams looked for an edge just like everyone else. For the record I'm obviously on the TB12 GOAT express but can't blame Joe for protecting his ego. It's hard to admit you've been surpassed by another. I think his wife was simply making a joke.

Joe Montana: I can’t call Tom Brady, or anyone, the best ever

He finally spoke up and isn't being gracious about it, despite TB12 now winning 5 rings. On the other hand, Brady said that he would take Montana over him with the game on the line. That's why I love TB12.
Well, I thought Joe's laughing when questioned about Tom's "cheating" and being totally unsupportive of the kid who idolized him was the first thing I'd ever seen to take him down a notch. Maybe out of loyalty to his former teammates who believe the bull.

Joe was really special; but Tom's clearly better. The Patriots, for the most part, have not been a star-studded team in this century. I'd say Tom is to quarterbacking what Vince Lombardi is to coaching.

Ridiculous. I thought Montana was a humble guy. guess I was wrong.
Joe had an NFC title and Super Bowl appearance kind of taken away by the refs in '84; went through a nasty divorce and later got dumped (stupidly IMO) by the Niners, and he's entitled :) to his feelings. I think he's the second best QB ever. He's human, just like the rest of us.

In a conversation like this, how can we Bostonians not look like total homers?

I acknowledge that Jim Brown was the greatest running back ever, maybe the best football player ever. Does that help?

How 'bout this: Chicago really DID have the G.O.A.T. play for them. Yup.

He was with the Blackhawks in '77-'78.

But an opinion can be dumb, uninformed or jealous. Having an opinion is not an argument.

The reason why Montana was considered GOAT so long are the 4 rings he has. Individually, he's 16-th in TD's, 13-th in TD/Int ratio and 13-th in career Pass rating.

Just like Pete Sampras was considered the GOAT because he had 14 GS titles. When Federer equaled his record, what did Sampras do? He went at the Wimbledon final where Roger won his 15-th and congratulated him for surpassing him.

Montana has no arguments over Brady. He had some silly ones before the game like 4-0>>4-2 but now he has none. A true sportsman would have accepted the passage of time. Protecting his ego is dumb when he has no arguments to support it. He was a great QB but guess what? A better, more accomplished one has surpassed him in every way. Resistance is futile.

I just wanted to be the 14th person to say Joe is entitled to his opinion, even though nobody said he isn't.

Sorry, Rocket Rod Laver remains my all time #1.

Brady has talked so much about how he idolized Joe Montana. Even at the top of his game, Brady has said Montana was better.

If Joe ever reached out to Brady, you know Brady would have jumped at it. He would have been thrilled to have even a small relationship/friendship with Montana.

It would have been a rewarding experience for both of them. Montana would be much more relevant today. Rather than pitting their legacies against each other, they each could enjoy and embrace it. I'm talking about the smallest of efforts, an afternoon together once a year, a phone call every few months, and complimentary public statements. So easy and so much more rewarding.

Just a differnt opinion but Montana was always arrogant when he played us in division. Yeah he was that good and we were pretty bad. But I dont think it was called for.
Montana 's division was
LA rams
NO Saints
ATL Falcons

all struggling franchises. So, there is something to be said for an easy division win each year.

Bradshaw wound up being far more gracious about it, easily calling Tom the best ever.

That and having all-world receiver Jerry Rice. (And some stickum.) I mean, let's be real: I'm pretty sure my mama could at least win a division championship if she were throwing to Jerry Rice.

Not Just rice. Your talking an amazing OL , Roger Crag as RB with 1000 yrds, Great kicker mike cofer, solid defense with Charlesy haley, bill Rom, don giffin, John Taylor brent jones i think. Montana was surrounted by good players and the coach wasnt to shabby either. In a division that pretty much sucked. We had Jimo mora and were 9-7 at best I think.
So kind of an easy road to for the 49ers I think

I think that was in jest.. and maybe somewhat true, but I don't think its a big deal at all.. If I was Joe Montana, I'd joke with my wife about how I'm the GOAT while we rumbled in the sheets, etc..

there is nothing wrong with what Montana said.. and he didn't talk about himself either, he cited other past greats in eras before him
