Malcolm Mitchell is the best rookie WR since...

.....Shockmain Davis!

Because ever Patriot WR thread needs a Shockmain Davis reference. Pet peeve.:)

Mitchell is developing just fine. Draft report said struggles to get separation. Poppycock.

Lets see how he will respond when other teams will actually plan for his trademark slant.

Think he will be fine in the long run. He is a better route runner than many other young WRs we had in the past few years.

Life will get tougher when defenses start to pay attention to him. But I like what I see in him. I haven't noticed his blocking though. He'll have to do that or he won't stay long

Aaron Dobson had a better rookie season than Branch. Branch had a mediocre rookie season. He didn't come on until his second season.

OK. In that case, you can say Mitchell is the most promising drafted rookie wr since Branch. No?

He was called out by BB after the 49ers game for his blocking prowess. He's a complete WR. Also, with Gronk and the others on the field, he'll be drawing number 3 and 4 QBs. A possible WR 1 against that?

Yes please.

Mitchell doing that much damage on the jets on less than 50% of snaps is even more impressive. He needs to start.

Dobson had 37 catches for 519 yards and 4 TDs. By this time his rookie season, he had 30 catches for 492 yards and 4 TDs. He got injured the last week of November in his rookie season and missed several games and got 7 catches for 27 yards in the last two games of the season.
Yes but Brady didnt have Gronk, bennet, Hogan, etc

Hart Lee Dykes was a surprise name on that list. I had completely forgotten that he had a successful rookie season with almost 800 yds. What a shame he was gone so quickly with injuries.

Terry Glenn was clearly the best rookie WR the Pats have ever had, and if he had had the right mindset, he might have been an all time great. He was good enough that was almost a lock for 1000 yds if he could get on the field for 14 or more games. We was that good physically that he had 2 thousand yd seasons at the END of his career in Dallas. Boy he was good, but boy he was nuts. ;)

Dobson was clearly a player who had a bad case of "arrested development". It is very ironic that when he came to the Pats his greatest attribute in college was his hands. I think in the end this was a textbook case of the wrong system for the player. He might have had a career if he'd gone to a team with an offense like the Ravens. I believe all the post snap reads in the Pats offense, played with mind and eventually effected his hands. The failure by NE was not anticipating this, since they normally do a good job a identifying players who can fit into their unique program.

Mitchell has a good chance, IMO, to break that 600 yd barrier and become the best rookie WR in the BB era. It won't get much mention nationally, because there is nothing in that number that stands out. But within the Pats system, 600+ yds would be pretty spectacular. IIRC, David Givens didn't crack 100 in his rookie year.

He's been one of the best blocking receivers on the team.

Totally agree. And he seems to get a kick out of it too when it helps the play succeed, which is even better.

And vice/versa life would get a lot easier for the rest our Offense if Teams start doubling Malcolm. Mitchell. The Defense can't double everybody.

Kenbrell Thompkins should be in the discussion along with Dobson because they both came out in the same year and had nearly identical stats:

KT - 12 games, 32 receptions, 69 targets, 466 yards, 4 TD

He's been one of the best blocking receivers on the team.

Better yet, every WR on this team is an excellent blocker. It's a pleasure to watch.

Dobson and KT started out well but both were flawed...Dobson had small hands with good speed but discount double catched. KT had decent speed and good quickness but discount body catched.:p:D

Mitchell will know he has made it when we sh*t on him like we do Edelman.

patsinthesnow please stick with your Boy Chris Harpah and don't jinx my boy M&M.:p:D

The most promising thing about Mitchell's season so far is that he is distinguishing himself among a crowded field of talented WRers and offensive weapons.

Either Edelman or Branch/Givens

It really depends on how much you credit Edelman's rookie year behind Wes.

Right, this is the primary difference. Dobson got beaten out by Kenbrell Thompkins out of camp and got thrown into the fire when there was no one left to catch balls but Edelman because Amendola, Gronk, and Vereen were all injured. Like, it was Edelman and then some combination of Thompson, Dobson, Bolden and Hoomanawanui for a good part of 2013.

Mitchell, on the other hand, is getting snaps and targets when the team has Gronk, Bennett, Edelman, Amendola, White, Lewis, and Hogan.
