Trying to figure out why in the world Ryan Mallett is on this list, he beat out Brian Hoyer (who is currently the Browns starting QB) for the backup spot after one season in the NFL. Mallett could be the second best QB in the NFL and he would still be riding the pine the way he is because he is the backup QB to the greatest QB play in the NFL ever.

You think Tavon Wilson who has 5 picks and 7 pass defenses (not to mention his ST work) in 2 years was a worse pick than Bequette, Price, McKenzie, Brace, Wheatley, O'Connell & Crable? lol, ok then. At least he's actually contributed to the team!

McKenzie could be the worst of them - 3rd round pick that blew out his knee then asked to be released a year later? Him, Crable & Dowling all ended up being horrible picks.

Tavon Wilson has 44 tackles, 5 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, 7 pass defends, and 1 return for a touchdown in his first two NFL seasons. Wilson being horrible is grossly overblown, he was in the doghouse last season, but he is not even 25 years old yet.

These are the worst picks of the Belichick era –

Laurence Maroney
Ras-I Dowling
Shawn Crable
Chad Jackson
Kevin O’Connell
Terrence Wheatley
Bethel Johnson
Taylor Price
Brock Williams
Adrian Klemm
Brandon Tate
Tyrone McKenzie

Wilson and Bequette are still on the roster, I will reserve the right to add them to the list later. I would also consider putting Hernandez on there just because his outcome was such a disaster but as a player on the field, he was outstanding so it could go either way. I am not going to put them in order because they all failed in different ways for different reasons so it is hard rank them fairly on one list.

Players like Chung, Brace, Cunningham, and Butler may not have lived up to their draft selection but they did contribute in some capacity during their tenures.

1.Wilson
2.Wheatley
3.Cunningham
4.Dowling
5.Brace
6.Chung

Because they were all overdrafted in the 2nd and predictably didn't work out.

7.Bequette
8.O'Connell

Because they were beyond bad 3rd rounders.

Chad Jackson, Tate, McKenzie, Crable, Butler were worthy risks that just didn't work out. I wouldn't include Mallett in this group unless actually someone thought he would overtake Brady.

I don't think McKenzie was a horrible pick; he just had truly rotten luck. Ron Brace, OTOH, was arguably the worst pick of the last decade; he didn't fill a true need, he wasn't particularly athletic, and he barely contributed.

Wow, what a miserable exercise. Why would anyone want to rank these guys considering just about all of them failed for us, and many of them are out of the league? I can't justify wasting my time...

Clearly they didn't work out, but what's the point in ranking the order of failure; I'd rather start to think about why they didn't work out.

Some looked like good prospects coming out of college, others had injury (McKenzie, Dowling, Wheatley), character/work ethic concerns (Brace, Jackson), or serious flaws with technique (O'Connell, Taylor Price).

It seemed like a lot of the developmental guys didn't develop in some of their weaker areas (Tate and Crable). That could be on the coaches, but they may just have had limited potential.

Players fail at the next level for a few different reasons, some out of anyone's control, but as an organization you just have to look for certain position-based traits that you believe correlate towards future success, and hope that your evaluation and expectation of the player is accurate.

You never know how a player is going to act in your locker room, and scouts are always looking for signs of "frauds" and "con-men" in the lead up to the draft.

It's like beating yourself up about your high school girlfriend twenty years later.

ESPN had an interesting article where they ranked the best and worse for all thirty two position in the first round over ten years.

The Patriots had three bests and zero worsts. Wilfork at 21, Mayo at 10 and Mankins at 32 were the best in ten years at their draft spot.

Maroney also contributed significantly more at times than most give him credit for.

Tavon Wilson gets so trashed on this board that I think he is starting to be underrated.

I think the thing people may resent about Tavon Wilson isn't so much the player, but the organizational arrogance that the Patriots (or maybe just BB) demonstrated with that pick. It's like they purposefully went out of their way to go against everyone else's evaluation of Wilson and other players that were drafted immediately after him. If he were a 6th round pick, he might have a lot more people rooting for him.

Yeah, Belichick has built a career on making choices based on making a point not what he thinks is best for the team.

Of course, all the "experts" thought McCourty was only a special teams player when the Pat picked him. I'm not saying Wilson was a great pick or pursued by another team, but what does Hairhat Kiper really know about what GMs really look for? Never played football and i don't think he's real sought after by teams.

Mayock on our "special teamer."

Kiper and ESPN were totally thrown, but I can't find that.

Using a first round pick who ultimately failed at his drafted position and had to be moved is probably not the best example you could have chosen.

Where would you have Maroney on this list? I'm assuming in the last paragraph?

I'd break them down like this:

CONTRIBUTED ON SOME LEVEL--Maroney, T.Wilson, Chung, Cunningham, Bethel Johnson, Butler, Tate

DIDN"T REALLY CONTRIBUTE MUCH AT ALL--Dowling, Brace, Jackson, Wheatley

DIDN"T DO ****--O'Connell, McKenzie, Crable, Price, Bequette

Obviously, the top category automatically removes them from the top of the list as "worst picks," while the bottom category seems to warrant higher placement in that grouping. The problem I have is that the bottom category weren't really super high picks, as I believe all were 3rd rounders that just didn't work out.

I would make a strong case for the highest picks who didn't do much of anything for one reason or another. That includes: Dowling, Brace, Chad Jackson, and Wheatley as being my top choices for worst picks.

So much useless crap, so little time.

In chronological order:
After Wilfork, the entire 2004 draft. Bumblin' Bennie Watson should never have been taken ahead of Karlos Dansby, among others. Guss Scott in the 3rd round was a slap in the face.

People bash Bill for the LaMa & CJack picks, but I was mostly on board with them, so I never include them as worst-ever. Garrett Mills in the 4th round however was garbage, and bypassing Antoine Bethea 3 TIMES in the 6th round was inexcusable.

The Entire 2007 Draft. Stomper Meriweather was then, is now, and Always will be a stupid punk, as predicted. Hard to screw up an entire draft, but Bill managed to do it…and Randy Moss & The Receiver do not count as draft picks.

Lil' Terry Wheatley, Chicken Legs Crable, 5th round talent Kevin O'Connell & Lil' Johnny Wilhite, all before the 130th pick: utter incompetence.

Just as I give Bill a pass for LaMa & CJack, so too do I for Darius Butler. The rest of the 2009 draft however was a colossal waste of a cornucopia of draft capital, save for Bill's last pick of MiniTron.

Jerry Cunnyham in the 2nd round was as predicted a grotesque over-draft. Simply Awful.

Glas-IR Dowling: need I say more?

Tavon The Error Repeater Wilson: see above. Jake the Fake Bequette: see Jerry Cunnyham.

Aaron We Coulda Had Keen Allen Dropson. And the best we can say about Duron Harmon in the 3rd round is that he's better than The Error Repeater in the 2nd round.

This is too easy, like shooting fish in a barrel. How's Bill going to Eff up another draft? We'll find out soon enough, because let's face it: if it weren't for Lawrence Taylor & Tom Brady, Bill would just be another coaching lifer, no more no less.
