2nd + 3rd = 5 years of poor defensive selections

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals have created one of the best Defensive Lines in the NFL with 2nd and 3rd round picks

(Michael Johnson, Carlos Dunlap, Geno Atkins)

If this was a Bengals forum, we'd be having the same exact discussion, except people would be harping on the Kenny Irons, Andre Caldwell, Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga, Chase Coffman, Jordan Shipley, Brandon Ghee, Devon Still, Brandon Thompson, and Mohamed Sanu picks. While also complaining that a second rounder was spent on Margus Hunt to be a gameday inactive.

It turns out that every team whiffs on draft picks.

By the way. I know the draftniks will hate me, but if you have some players who suck for various reasons and get rid of them, then turn around and replace the with Talib, Dennard, keep Arrington, move McCourty etc. you've done the job of player acquisition.

Get a 7th like Buchanan while teams wiff on pass rushers in the 1st and 2nd regularly still stocks the team.

It's not about collecting talent. Learn from mistakes, but don't dwell on them.

You may have done the job but did you do it in the most efficient way.

That's fundamentally no different than saying the guy at work who needs 20 hours of overtime to do a job the company budgeted for 40 hours is still getting the job done, he may be doing it but having to pay him 20 hours of overtime is still putting a unnecessary strain on the company.

I agree that you shouldn't dwell on your mistakes but rather learn from them and move on, the question I have to ask is do you feel we've learned from the mistakes, because it seems to me the same mistakes are still being made in rounds 2 and 3 as in prior years on the defensive side of the ball.

Using others to justify your poor decisions is always a cautionary tale. Being the best requires a commitment to improvement and development, your success will not last long should you hang your hat on things like "they did it also".

How many years can you wif on 2nd and 3rd round draft picks before it catches up with you.

These choices are impacting us this year we entered the draft with 5 draft picks, do you think if we hadn't missed on so many players like Cunningham, Dowling, and others we'd have had just 5 picks?

Which translates into an average 9-7 record and one and done in the playoffs.

That doesn't matter, they still built a go line and have a strong defense, what limited them is Dalton and the offense.

It's too bad you never realized that when the Patriots were limited by QB play......they actually had the better defense.

Well, that would be judged by results compared to other teams (most with a gift of better draft position).

In a team game, that means wins, meaning we are the best at putting together winning teams in the last decade and a half.

Of course that includes effectively meshing the talent, so teams with all pros that can't crack .500 should be viewed negatively, not positively as often happens in these threads.

The Patriots have had lower picks than any team and have lost picks to obtain Belichick and because Goodell is a Jets fink. They are like the salesman who comes in, writes more contracts than anyone on the staff, then spends the afternoon playing golf while his competitors work all afternoon.
