After experiencing a health issue, New England Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams has been away from the team and holding meetings mostly over Zoom in recent weeks.

The good news is, it sounds like he’s getting closer to returning.

Head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about Williams on Tuesday, and his response is certainly encouraging.  After what’s mostly been “wait and see” responses previously, Vrabel hinted that we might finally see Williams here in Foxboro in the coming weeks.

“Doing well,” said Vrabel of his colleague.  “He’ll be here soon, and excited about that. I think everybody’s looking forward to that.”

Williams has been away from the club after what was deemed to be a “medical scare,” although he hasn’t fully revealed what it was.

During an interview last month, whatever it is might have had to do with how he takes care of himself, and it sounds like he’s definitely going to be a little more careful moving forward.

“Football is a job that obviously there is some stress involved,” said Williams, via Reiss. “Just eating right. Working out.  If you’re supposed to take any medication, take it. Like I told the players, we all think we’re invincible.”

“I think a lot of times, when there are things you can prevent, and you don’t prevent them, that’s just not being smart. That’s what I’ve done the last couple of years, even longer. I’ve ignored doctors. I’ve ignored everyone and just kind of lived my life. While it was fun, I realize you have to take care of yourself. That’s what I’m doing.”

“Where I am now, my mind is clear. I’m moving around. I’m happy. Everything is good. I’m just looking forward to getting back to Foxborough and seeing everybody in person.”

Williams, who is in his first season as the team’s defensive coordinator under Vrabel, inherited a pretty solid group on that side of the football.  He faces the task of hopefully seeing them rebound after an inconsistent 2024 where they allowed 417 points, with the Patriots finishing the year with a -128 NFL point differential.
