Ryan Fitzpatrick --> Texans.. Guess no to Mallet

I wish that this 'player as coach' meme would die. Fitzpatrick is like, 3 years removed from being considered a solid starter in this league and getting a big payday.

While he would be silly to not see the writing on the wall you've got to imagine his focus will be on trying to win the starting job, win games and get one more big contract. Also I'm not convinced that Ryan Fitzpatrick is the guy you want 'coaching up' your #1 draft pick...

Fitzpatrick might not be a great QB but he's a smart guy and acquits himself professionally. Bortles can learn a little from that.

If you're going with Bortles, you start him from day 1 and allow Fitzpatrick to coach him up during practise with the rest of the coaches.

Fitzpatrick is a good ordinary player. Unless they feel the need to tank, I don't see being any better than Schaub or Keenum given their stage of development.

Bortles, at least IMO, is not ready to start Day 1. I have a lot of friends that went to UCF and I've seen quite a few of their games over the years. I honestly think he's overrated. But he's probably one of the top two quarterbacks of this class. Still, he needs some polishing on the bench before he's ready to come in and lead that team.

As others have said, Fitz is a really good backup for a Mallett or a good interim starter then backup for whoever they draft. This has nothing to do with Mallett. With regards to Mallett, there's no doubt in my mind -none - that they could get something decent for him but there's significant value in a good backup too; we found that out in 2008. If we don't trade him it doesn't prove the naysayers correct - that wouldn't be proven until a year from now if no-one signs Mallett to starter money but I am confident someone will because his arm is rare

What the signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick means, that its clear that the Texans are going to go with a QB with their first pick. Picking up Fitzpatrick means they'll have a veteran QB who will make the Rookie's entry into the league a lot less stressful. Fitzpatrick has been a decent NFL QB. In Texas he will have more talent surrounding him than he ever had in Buffalo. In BOB he will have better coaching and play in a better system than he ever did in Buffalo. What Fitzpatrick means to Houston is that they won't HAVE to start a rookie at the start of the year. And what it means to NE, is that Ryan Mallett isn't going anywhere.

They need a starting QB either way so I don't think it necessarly means that.

Schaub is being traded to the Raiders.

Schaub is being traded to the Raiders.

I saw that report. Pretty dumb move by the Faiders. So they're going to give up a draft pick AND take on his contract? They should just wait until he ultimately gets released. I guess they don't want to compete with the Browns for his services on the market. Kyle Shanahan is the OC there and Schaub has a good amount of history with him.

I don't know. They reportedly only gave up a 7th round pick, and the Raiders have more cap space than they know what to do with right now. Schaub needs to get his confidence back, and working with Kyle Shanahan might be the best way for him to do that. If he can get back to where he was from 2008-2012 then Oakland is much better off at QB than they've been in a long, long time, and can address other needs in the draft.

Shanahan is with Cleveland.

It might be fair to question "player as coach" but I think it's reasonable to talk about an experienced veteran being a mentor and someone that can help facilitate a rookies entry into the NFL.

Only insofar you can mentor someone by doing.

I remember the gist of an interview with a player whose name escapes me, but he was a vet and he was asked if he was brought in to mentor players and his response was he came to the team he went to (wasn't ours) to try to win football games and play out his contract. Players might give lip service to the notion but I think it's most likely that helping someone who might supplant you and cost you millions of dollars is probably not an enticing notion to most veterans.

They might show a rookie what it means to be a professional and the rookie might learn from them by observing but I can't imagine someone taking an active role in mentoring their successor.

Ouch, Fitz as Texans QB! The king of tossing a pick when down by a TD with a couple of minutes to go. The guy is laughing all the way to the bank on this one.

:yeahthat:

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the perfect security blanket signing. He gives you a top backup and potential interim starter as your presumptive QB-of-the-future ramps up. That's valuable whether the QBOTF is Bortles, Mallett, or what have you.

But I think the Pats are keeping Mallett.

I doubt Mallett will be resigning here at all, but what does Matt Cassel have to do with anything?

He just resigned with MIN for 2 more years, and is the favorite to start over Christian Ponder this season.

His deal was for 2 yrs/10 million anyway. That wouldn't have been the kind of "backup" deal that Bill Belichick would have considered. We're not paying our backup QBs 5 million dollars a year.

Matt made a fortune by filling in for Brady in his contract year. Mallett will make the same $ if he signs this year or next but if Brady goes down next season he could potentially make a boatload.

I've seen no solid evidence that Mallet is going anywhere. My only concern is can we re-sign him when his rookie contract is up and how much it will cost.

I don't understand what everyone sees in Mallet? Every year he gets trade rumours, every year they are shot down by Bill, every time I see him play I see a cannon arm and some decent accuracy but poor decisions.

But I must admit, I was excited about the prospect of him going to Houston. Did anyone else read about the rumours of Mallett -> Houston, Houston's 2nd -> Carolina, Steve Smith -> New England?

There is absolutely zero chance of the Pats resigning Mallett after this season, unless Tom Brady is announcing his retirement and Mallett is competing for the starting job.

Mallett will want to move to a team where he could start. And, there will be teams willing to pay him more than the Pats.

I don't understand what everyone sees in Mallet?

1) He's tall.

2) He's got a big arm.

3) He's a coach's son who gets film study and so forth.

4) He's been apprenticing under the best - Brady and Belichick.

The knowledgeable player personnel guys on Sirius grade him higher than an QB in this year's draft.

So Peyton was Ryan's mentor?

Take the Steve Smith part out and it works now.

Not that it will.

You would be paying that price, if BB were as dumb as the Draftnik posters here, who would trade Mallett for another draft pick.

They NEVER include replacing him with another body. It seem the going price for a realistic, backup QB is around $4-5 million a year now, judging by the Cassell and Fitzpatrick deals.

It is also the likely lowest transition tag level that Mallett will command in 2015. Thus a subsequent 3rd round compensation pick when lost, or Pats price if kept after next season.

BB gets to keep $4 million in CAP for 2014 paying Mallett under a
$ million. Essentially the same CAP "savings" that a renegotiated Wilfork deal might achieve, with no fuss.
