Patriots CUTS

In addition, wide receiver Mark Harrison on the NFI list.

Oh right, forgot about Harrison on the NFI list too.

I get his point re: Salas and his possible upside, but it'd be difficult to try and justify another wide receiver in my opinion. Another thing to consider is that if Salas was 1/2 as good as so many think, he'd never be in this position to begin with.

One of our posters assures us that Belichick never would do such a thing. Both Washington and Fells make sense as post Game One additions.

Would you like to give all of the examples of when he has done it in the past, and detail the advantages of doing so with Washington vs the risk of another team signing him, and the loss of not having him for a division game?

Not really. Develin has yet to prove anything in a NFL regular season game.
True. Now that I think about it, it goes back to what you and I discussed last week regarding Develin and Hoomanawanui and that they were battling for one roster spot in all likelihood whilst economics would factor into the decision.

The reason why I bring this up is because reports were that Hoomanawanui was on the verge of getting cut until he restructured his contract. It could explain why Develin made the team initially as insurance in case he didn't, but once Hoomanawanui agreed to the pay cut Develin became expendable.

Business is business.

Sure Mulligan is the guy a Jets fan I know complained about every game for getting flagged for holding multiple times at inopportune times.

I'd take Ballard over him as a blocking TE based on pre-season play, but Ballard does have his gammy knee to worry about.

Don't we already have a plethora of big mediocre blockers who can't catch?

I can't think of any big mediocre blockers on the team at the minute? Hooman is not huge and then it's down to Gronk who can both block and catch and Sudfeld who is still a bit of an unknown at this point.

We just added a bunch of linemen each of whom can block better than Mulligan. They cannot catch, but neither can Mulligan (now with his sixth team). Not sure I'm seeing the need.

I guess BB really didn't like the depth at the bottom of the roster.

Belichick loves to play golf. Looks like he gave himself a Mulligan when nobody else would.

I think that there may have been a need for the more traditional inline blocking TE, Mack. After the loss of Fells and Ballard, it left us kind of thin for the bigger blocking TE.

Who knows if he'll stay or not, or exactly how long that will be? In the meantime Hooman is not a good blocker per se, and Sudfeld seems to be the hopeful replacement to Hernandez's move/joker position. Of course the situation of Gronk coming back may make Mulligan expendable sooner rather than later.

Don't we currently have zero? (Before this move)

Hooman is a big guy at 6’4 265 Lbs. although he needs to improve his inline blocking skills he is good coming out of the back field as a FB in the I-formation or broken I-formation.

If I had to guess Mulligan is simply 1-2 week signing until Gronkowski is up to task.

And which of our rookie WR's would you cut to sign Salas?

None of them, I'd have looked elsewhere on the roster to make room.

Our WR corps is currently:

3 promising rookies
2 guys who have yet to play a full season.
1 special teams maven.

I'm very excited about this position and I'm not expecting Amendola or Edelman to get injured but between the inexperience and the history of injuries I'd think 7 players at the position would be a wise use of a roster spot.

The Pats are keeping 5 "true" WRs (let's keep Slater out of this).

In all likelihood whoever is #5 has, at best, a 50-50 shot of being active, so there isn't much point in keeping 6 WRs on the 53.

I think it will depend a lot on Sudfeld actually. I can see a scenario where we play a lot of 2 TE with Sudfeld in the murdered role.
If so, how he blocks will determine whether he is on the field when its 2 true TEs.
If the answers are yes, and not so good, then we could easily keep 4 TEs.
