Draft Game: Everyone can play

Looking over this draft for my idea of Patriots' players, I came to the conclusion that this is a really weak draft class. I had less than 30 players picked out when I scanned the list and penciled in prospects, and I was scraping to get that many.

24: LB Stewart Bradley (Nebraska) - 1st round players are individuals who are expected to contribute while learning, Bradley appears to have the coverage skills to rotate in on passing downs at SILB. He also has the size, if not the functional strength (yet) to play inside a BB 3-4. He comes into the draft with experience at MLB, DE, SLB, and DB experience.

28: CB A.J. Davis (NC State) - His write-up indicated the most field smarts to go with his physical skills. "Alert to blocking schemes and it is rare to see him bite on head fakes or pump action by the quarterback...Quick to recognize the play developing and unlike most young cornerbacks, he will not eye the quarterback long, rather using his hand/eye coordination to mirror his coverage assignment throughout the route...Is a master at reading the receiver's eyes and hips to maintain relationship in the route...Could be a little more physical in his tackles vs. the run, but he does like to hit and while he's not a trained killer, he has the decent force behind his strikes to bring the ball carrier down."

60: RB Brian Leonard (Rutgers) - Patrick Pass' replacement with Kevin Faulk's playmaking potential. Run, Pass, Block, Team Leader.

91: NT Paul Soliai (Utah) - Excellent two gap defender to develop behind Vince.

123: S Kevin Payne (Louisiana-Monroe) - Multi-purpose player with FS and SS experience among other position skills, and good size.

165: LB Zak DeOssie (Brown) - Good size for a 3-4 ILB, good Long Snapper, good in Special Teams coverage, helped his stock with a good Shrine Game.

187: OT Allen Barbre (Missouri Southern State) - Patchick picked him out, he got a good write-up after the Texas vs. Nation All-Star game.

196: TE Anthony Pudewell (Nevada) - "Anthony Pudewell is an underrated receiver who many scouts feel is one of the premier blockers in the country at his position." If necessary, he will make a good third string blocking TE.

219: WR Steve Breaston (Michigan) - WR or QB to close out the Pats' draft, I went WR.

Something this exercise taught me:

The Pats would do well to franchise Samuel with the intent of keeping him on the team. This year's CB crop is pitifully weak.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that looking over the players.

Not to rain on anyone's parade here, but . . .

The Pats get the Cardinals' sixth-rounder (#165) instead of the Cards' seventh rounder (#196), not in addition to it. :bricks:

OK, well I'm going to go ahead and post who I want the Pats to take.

#24- Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas (CB obvious need area, this is a smart kid with good speed)

#28- Anthony Spencer, OLB, Purdue (Takes TBC's spot)

#60- Jason Hill, WR, Washington St. (I really like Hill, he's smart, good frame, produced huge #'s for Wash St.)

#91- Kevin Payne, FS, Louisiana Monroe (Had a great Senior Bowl week, has the tools)

#123- Kolby Smith, RB, Louisville (Big, smashmouth style RB who has a lot of potential)

#165- Justin Warren, ILB, Texas A&M (No relation to Ty, he's a leader, a big, instinctive LB)

#187- Kasey Studdard, OG, Texas (Never can use enough depth on the o-line)

#196- Reggie Lewis, CB, Florida (Started for Meyer, good enough for me)

#219- David Overstreet, SS, Missouri (Hopefully he can be a ST ace and eventually play on D)

Ohh well, a compensatory pick will make up for it.

Patchick? Can we give credit where credit is due here please?

Obviously this guy will turn out to be the steal of the draft, I just want to be known as the guy who picked him.

/sarcasm

I'd happily give you credit, if I hadn't read a patchick post some time ago mentioning him. :snob:

No Baylor players?

Nut's rules take getting used to.

No Baylor players?

I'm not picking anyone from a team that lost to Army... at its home stadium. (I was was there, in the Army section, that was a great comeback by Bobby Ross's boys... really impressed by the Army fans)

O, my mistake. I thought you had confused my post with patchick's in this thread, because I had picked him and patchick did not.

My mistake. Carry on.

In this scenario, Graham and Banta-Cain leave, Samuel is franchised and London Fletcher is signed.

#24 Robert Meachem, Ten- Similar athleticism to Chad Jackson, but a better head on his shoulders and more production. Upside: Javon Walker.
#28 Anthony Spencer, Pur- Merriman-lite. A bad, bad man. Upside: Merriman
#60 Brian Leonard, Rut- The thunder to Maroney's lightning. Upside: Craig James
#91 Tim Shaw, PSU- Versatile ILB prospect with pass rush skills. Upside: Bruschi
# 123 Jay Moore, Neb- The Pats get their OLB bookends of the future in one draft. Upside: Patrick Kerney
# 165 Tyler Palko, Pitt- Gutty back-up. Cassell won't be around forever. Upside: Tony Romo
# 187 Jonny Harline, BYU- 3rd TE with elite hands. Upside: Alex Smith
# 196 Joe Anoiai, GT- powerful 3-4 DE prospect. Upside: Igor Olshansky
# 219 Brian Smith Missou- project pick for rotational OLB of the future. Upside: Shaun Phillips

Who is ranking Houston as a potential 1st round pick? I haven't seen him that highly regarded anywhere.

NFLdraftscout.com has Houston going at #21 to the Broncos for starters. Aaron Ross and Marcus McCauley both didn't have great senior bowl weeks and their stocks have dropped as a result of it. Perhaps that movement has pushed Houston into the first round. Maybe more emphasis has been put on intangibles. Houston was on the academic honor roll, while Ross has had off field issues.

24: Jarvis Moss DE/OLB Fluid when chasing qbs. Tremendous upside but is still raw and needs alot of coaching. Is he smart enough?

28: Brandon Meriweather FS Little bowl of fire, personal issues must be checked out

60: Brian Leonard FB Good leverage when running into the hole, breaks tackles, pretty good blocker, good hands. Can do alot.

91: Stewart Bradley LB Good in coverage, must get stronger and play with more fire in his pants.

123: Brandon Myles WR ??

187: Kyle Young C/G No more Mruz or Yates, this is a mauler backup and might push for a starting RG job later on

219: Dallas Sartz OLB STer

I'm thinking we deal with LB and WR in free agency, that Samuel is gone and that Dillon has one foot out of the door.

24 - Aaron Ross, CB Texas

28 - Michael Griffiin, SS Texas

60 - Brian Leonard, RB Rutgers

91 - Buster Davis, LB Florida State

123 - Jay Moore , LB Nebraska

187 - Brandon Sharpe, FS Lousiville

196 - Mike Walker, WR Central Florida

219 - Joe Anoai, DT Georgia Tech

Question: are we picking by who we want the Pats to take or who we think they will select?

Both but mostly who youthink should be taken at that spot.

This will all change once comp picks are announced, then we can do it again.

Good peeing man on Patriots Planet, just need to tweak the timing a bit.

...why is everyone taking Leonard in the second pick when by the rules he'll be there in the 3rd.

If I understand the rules correctly, we can pick ANY PLAYER BELOW THE PATS SLOT...but can't select a player above each slot.

1. you can pick any player below the Patriots pick #. (at #24 you can pick any player listed below #24, at #60 you can pick any player listed below #60, ect, ect.
---

Maybe PATSNUTme can clerify...

#60: Irons CB Auburn
#91: Soliai DT Utah
#123: Wynn RB Florida
Comp: Ball WR New Hampshire
#165: Brackenridge CB Washington St.
#187: Mozes C West Virginia
#219: Wolfe RB Northern Illinois
