Looking over this draft for my idea of Patriots' players, I came to the conclusion that this is a really weak draft class. I had less than 30 players picked out when I scanned the list and penciled in prospects, and I was scraping to get that many.
24: LB Stewart Bradley (Nebraska) - 1st round players are individuals who are expected to contribute while learning, Bradley appears to have the coverage skills to rotate in on passing downs at SILB. He also has the size, if not the functional strength (yet) to play inside a BB 3-4. He comes into the draft with experience at MLB, DE, SLB, and DB experience.
28: CB A.J. Davis (NC State) - His write-up indicated the most field smarts to go with his physical skills. "Alert to blocking schemes and it is rare to see him bite on head fakes or pump action by the quarterback...Quick to recognize the play developing and unlike most young cornerbacks, he will not eye the quarterback long, rather using his hand/eye coordination to mirror his coverage assignment throughout the route...Is a master at reading the receiver's eyes and hips to maintain relationship in the route...Could be a little more physical in his tackles vs. the run, but he does like to hit and while he's not a trained killer, he has the decent force behind his strikes to bring the ball carrier down."
60: RB Brian Leonard (Rutgers) - Patrick Pass' replacement with Kevin Faulk's playmaking potential. Run, Pass, Block, Team Leader.
91: NT Paul Soliai (Utah) - Excellent two gap defender to develop behind Vince.
123: S Kevin Payne (Louisiana-Monroe) - Multi-purpose player with FS and SS experience among other position skills, and good size.
165: LB Zak DeOssie (Brown) - Good size for a 3-4 ILB, good Long Snapper, good in Special Teams coverage, helped his stock with a good Shrine Game.
187: OT Allen Barbre (Missouri Southern State) - Patchick picked him out, he got a good write-up after the Texas vs. Nation All-Star game.
196: TE Anthony Pudewell (Nevada) - "Anthony Pudewell is an underrated receiver who many scouts feel is one of the premier blockers in the country at his position." If necessary, he will make a good third string blocking TE.
219: WR Steve Breaston (Michigan) - WR or QB to close out the Pats' draft, I went WR.
