Borges & Curran clash over Welker's playing time

That was stupid.

Curran: Edelman was practicing with Brady all offseason, looked great in camp.
Borges: Welker is better in games. Practices don't matter.

Borges always has and still does need to be the center of attention, the worse mediot in boston sports..

Cannot stand that dude...

Edelman is a better run blocker than Welker is at this point, he is also quicker in the screen game.

Maybe it is just my imagination, but Welker has looked slower over the past two games, he has also dropped a couple of balls which the old Welker wouldn't have had any problems with.

The outside run and the screen are important to this team's offense, it allows Ridley to get in space and use his explosiveness, furthermore, it caters to the strengths of run blockers such as Nate Soldor and Gronkowski, while taking the heat off of Brady.

With Hernandez gone for the foreseeable future, this team might be in alot of trouble, so far, Lloyd appears to make as many mistakes and drops as he does spectacular plays, Welker is a mystery man, Gronkowski will be asked to stay in and run block more often and nobody knows what you are going to get out of Fells and Edelman in the pass game, all the while, the O-line appears to be having major issues, and with a quarterback like Brady, who wont be able to escape, the breakdown in protection will have a bigger impact.

Borges is a turd. We should all know by now what he says should just go in one ear and out the other

I feel Welker is really struggling to gain separation out there against man coverage...which I have been concerned with for a while.

I think the team will be fine. 'A lot of trouble' is a massive over statement. The O Line did absolutely fine against the Titans, we were missing Connolly this week and Thomas was a weak link in the interior. Not to mention when you look at this Cardinals front seven, it could well be the best in the league.

Teams have bad weeks. Everyone remember Cleveland? Sheesh. No need to slit your wrists people!

That could well be the case. They both seemed to do well in camp. Welker didn't get much play in preseason, nor did Branch who was also held out of team periods in camp. Belichick's new version of competition, apparently. So Edelman looked good in preseason, although not that good, and we all know preseason is a pipedream.

With Hernandez gone for the foreseeable future, this team might be in alot of trouble.

That may be an understatement.

Meh, you don't tag a guy for $9+ million to sit him on the bench and watch the offense sputter, then bring him in when you see how miserable things are going. Even in a limited role and with whatever some people view as being slower and whatnot, Welker still almost doubled Edelman's production yesterday and had a key catch at the end after a killer penalty that should have led to a winning score. No excuse for the mismanagement, time to stop whatever stupid experimenting is going on and put that $9+ mill to use

Yeah, aside from Brady getting bloodied they did fine with Hernandez on the field. They just lost their base offense. Which is going to make it a lot harder for Brady to help them look better than they built to be. Vollmer is rotating. Which means Cannon is rotating and in the absence of Connolly who now has concussion concerns between positions. Gronk was already being asked to block more. Mankins is not going to be 100% perhaps all season. Solder is finding his footing at LT but it's a process. Several of the teams we face who are QB challenged also field pretty talented defenses who now see a crack in the armor. All they have to do is keep it close.

Not sure how others feel, but even though Welker put up good numbers in terms of catches and yards, it did not have the FEEL of a standard Welker performance.

Oddly enough most of Welker's catches came up the field instead of the typical middle of the field cuts. It's almost like they forced the action to Wes instead of coming in the natural game flow.

Borges is a total idiot but has very strangely happened to have quite accidentally stumbled upon the correct point of view in this debate. The offense went from abysmal to decent only when we starting going no huddle and Tom started looking for Wes.

Edelman may be more elusive in the open field and have more straight line speed, but Wes is way better at transitioning from the catch to the run without hesitation, getting low, and getting more out of the play. Limiting his reps is counterproductive, unless there are injury reasons we do not know about.

Well he's barely been on the field. I don't know how anyone can expect him to sit on the bench for extended periods, with no preseason action, then to step on the field and be the top 5 WR he was right away. If you want the Welker of last year he'll AT LEAST have to be on the field as consistently as he was last year. Instead he's playing spot duty.

Welker and Edelman are both fine in the slot and each has advantages over the other in that role. Unfortunately, neither are really good outside. It would be nice to have someone to fill that role but the old guys they brought in were proved to be done and they undertstandably devoted the entire draft to defense.

Ummm . . . he had 2/3 of the snaps this week, and only had 12 fewer than Edelman this week. It's not like the Patriots completely substituted Edelman for Welker.

If week 1 is any indication, Welker would've seen alot less snaps if we weren't desperate after watching the offense fail without him. Besides 12 fewer than a guy who's proven as little as Edelman at WR may as well be called spot duty. It's a complete waste of cap if that's the playing time he'll get. He should be seeing more snaps than any WR on the team, way more snaps than any WR not named Lloyd.

I find it interesting to watch people going so far out of their way to defend what's been done with regards to Welker. Well.....

If Welker was losing it last year, BB shouldn't have franchised him.

If Welker wasn't looking sharp in the offseason, he should have gotten a lot more time in the exhibition games to clean things up.

If Welker is in such a decline, the offense shouldn't have improved once Brady started looking more to him.

Stop swallowing the party line.

Edelman was our starting wide receiver. Our preferred base is 2 TE And 2 WR (and no Welker).

Welker did not play the first two series.

When Hernandez was injured, our $9.5M sub entered the game. Welker played lots of reps, and will continue to do so, because Hernandez is injured.

Edelman has been judged to be more valuable on the team than Welker. Edelman has been judged to be much more valuable than Salas, Gaffney, Branch and Stallworth.

Salas has been judged to be more valuable on the 53 man squad than Gaffney, Branch and Stallworth. I expect to see Salas active next week.

Yes, we could sign an emergency backup in Branch. He might even be active, or not.
