Player Signing Patriots sign LB Bobby Carpenter

His pick on Thanksgiving was pretty good, in fact on the whole it looked pretty good that game.

...but that is the only time I've ever seen him so I'll assume that was just a blip for him

In to see if there is anything he can do!

Not bad, but not great!

Camp fodder JAG.......either that or BB really does look to these boards for info in how to build his roster and remembers all the threads on this guy.....hmmmmm....I wonder....

...not going to miss those picks in rounds 5, 6, 7.

Not sure of his ST capabilities. He would seem to be competing with Koutovides, who did get on the field a bit at the end of the year at LB, for a role. But I'd probably feel a bit more comfortable with Bobby Carpenter in a LB rotation than Koutovides.

No harm in this. Pats could field a team right now, before the draft, with the exception of LDE. If they can pick up any edge rusher in the first two rounds he would probably be at the top of the depth chart. But entering the draft they will have one of the most complete teams in the league.

Carpenter can compete for a spot in the LB rotation, and has experience in both 3-4 and 4-3. Belichick has always looked at failed first rounders as a potential opportunity, as many coaches do. Check out Gallery.

Good news for all those people who blasted the Pats for not drafting when he was a draft prospect and there were a decent amount. A Meh move for everyone else.

I say the guy got an outside chance to make the 53 man roster as a a back up rotational guy.

ESPN actually gave him a decent write up on their free agent tracker:

Carpenter has been a career backup since entering the league in 2006. He is a big, strong linebacker with above-average athleticism. He runs well with good range in pursuit but lacks great burst and lateral quickness in space. Carpenter reacts quickly as play unfold and maintains leverage and proper run fits. He has pop and power on contact and is best in a confined area as a run defender. He can be effective in combination zone coverages but may get exposed in pure man schemes. Carpenter provides valuable depth but makes his biggest contribution as a core special-teams player.

They give him a grade of 57 which is near the top of the "Good Back Up" range.

Maybe he will make it as the 4th ILB. I am not betting on him making a roster spot.

Personally...I think Carpenter can tackle compared to Guyton .....who can't even tackle a dummy....but still ...its going to make for a very competitive camp....on the defensive side...:rocker:

Yup, I remember all the folks here screaming to draft the guy. (I was not among them .)

Well, in fairness, the Pats would have had to have traded up. And if they did, they wouldn't have been able to draft Laurence Maroney. So it worked out for them..... I think. Maybe. Maybe not.

How can this be bad?

1) We need linebackers to take reps in camp and in the preseason. We probably don't want Spikes taking a lot of camp reps.

2) The only real cost is his signing bonus.

3) Which linebackers are locks to make the team?

OLB Ninkovich, Scott (presumably)
ILB Mayo, Spikes, Fletcher

That leaves FOUR open roster spots. Carpenter many be a long shot, but that's fine. More competition has to be a good thing. Carpenter is a STer so he is "acceptable" as a backup LB.

I'm pretty sure I was one of them. I really wanted us to pick Bobby Carpenter. BB knows best. I really thought Bobby Carpenter was gonna be a stud, instead of a dud. Let's dig up his draft thread lol.

Belichick apparently woke up and said "I haven't signed anyone in a while, and I'm bored. Let's toss a dart at the free agent board and sign whichever stiff's name gets hit."

I agree with this. It's highly unlikely we'll be seeing him in the starting lineup come week 1, but we need players to compete in camp and for the best to come out on top.

If you have nobody to compete against you for your spot you have no reason to work as hard.

The NFL is cutthroat. Everybody should work, practice, and play like it could be their last game on the roster. Complacency is a killer.

This picture says a lot:
I could have swore this guy was black back when people were wetting themselves about the prospect of drafting him

As of now, I don't even expect him to be on active or even on the 53 for Game One.

Perhaps he will be solid competitor for a role position or a backup spot or a special team spot; perhaps not.

Maybe Carpenter doesn't have the skills to be anything but a potential backup. That's fine.

As you say, at worst, he'll take reps in camp and push other players.

Nope. He's also been white

I followed him back at OSU when there were the "3 white LB's with long hair."

One was AJ Hawk, one was Bobby Carpenter, and one was.....
