Carpenter has been a career backup since entering the league in 2006. He is a big, strong linebacker with above-average athleticism. He runs well with good range in pursuit but lacks great burst and lateral quickness in space. Carpenter reacts quickly as play unfold and maintains leverage and proper run fits. He has pop and power on contact and is best in a confined area as a run defender. He can be effective in combination zone coverages but may get exposed in pure man schemes. Carpenter provides valuable depth but makes his biggest contribution as a core special-teams player.
Good news for all those people who blasted the Pats for not drafting when he was a draft prospect and there were a decent amount.
Yup, I remember all the folks here screaming to draft the guy. (I was not among them .)

played special teams so bad for Miami, against us, that he got a coach fired!
Jets' Special Teams Coach Says Bobby Carpenter Got a Coach Fired
How can this be bad?
1) We need linebackers to take reps in camp and in the preseason. We probably don't want Spikes taking a lot of camp reps.
2) The only real cost is his signing bonus.
3) Which linebackers are locks to make the team?
OLB Ninkovich, Scott (presumably)
ILB Mayo, Spikes, Fletcher
That leaves FOUR open roster spots. Carpenter many be a long shot, but that's fine. More competition has to be a good thing. Carpenter is a STer so he is "acceptable" as a backup LB.
I could have swore this guy was black back when people were wetting themselves about the prospect of drafting himThis picture says a lot:
I agree with this. It's highly unlikely we'll be seeing him in the starting lineup come week 1, but we need players to compete in camp and for the best to come out on top.
...not going to miss those picks in rounds 5, 6, 7.
Not sure of his ST capabilities. He would seem to be competing with Koutovides, who did get on the field a bit at the end of the year at LB, for a role. But I'd probably feel a bit more comfortable with Bobby Carpenter in a LB rotation than Koutovides.
No harm in this. Pats could field a team right now, before the draft, with the exception of LDE. If they can pick up any edge rusher in the first two rounds he would probably be at the top of the depth chart. But entering the draft they will have one of the most complete teams in the league.
Carpenter can compete for a spot in the LB rotation, and has experience in both 3-4 and 4-3. Belichick has always looked at failed first rounders as a potential opportunity, as many coaches do. Check out Gallery.
