Pats Trade for Haynesworth (merged)

Trade is definitely worth the risk.

This guy would've probably been near the top of the list of people I would never expect to put on a Patriots' jersey due to what has appeared to be very selfish reactions to his situation in Washington. Wasn't his aggravation there due to a scheme change that he didn't think would suit him well? The Patriots rotate schemes nearly every week. If he makes the team, are we going to see him all happy one week when he gets to do what he wants, and then pi$$y the next when he's told to do something else?

Time will tell. I'd love to see a huge payoff from this.

Good call by the Pats. I never expected this, and I doubt 99% of you guys did either ha.

If he doesn't play hard for BB, I would be stunned.

I would say closer to 99.99% of us didn't expect it.

Haynesworth could be an absolute beast! I can even imagine how you would run against a front four of Warren (squared), Haynesworth, and Vince! Haynesworth could easily play DE in the 3-4 scheme (he didn't like playing NT), or playing an inside tackle in the 4-3, he can make big time plays. For the price of a fifth round pick in 2013, (which we all know would have been another TE), it is certainly worth it.

Imagine if he actual comes to play? What if the Pats moved Mayo to OLB in the 4-3, your defense would look like this:

Ty Warren, Haynesworth, Wilfork, Gerald Warren
Mayo, SPikes, Cunningham
McCourty, Chung, Merriweather, Bodden

That's pretty good!

Haynesworth will get his time to rush the passer, the Pats have a propesity for getting early leads, once that happens the nickel defense gets on the field and Albert can rush the QB to his hearts delight.

It is hard to be a malcontent when you are on a winning football team, surrounded by Pro Bowlers, who are trying to win Another Superbowl.

I think this will work out for BB and the Pats, another Corey Dillon type trade.

so... when does he show up for camp?

You got it! Well the younger generation probably doesn't! It just makes me smile though to imagine this scenario playing out, particularly if AH is back to his 'monster' form from his TEN days under the watchful eye of BB.

Just remember to hide the "Camel's"!!

You gotta wonder what kind of offseason training this guy does....if any.

If he was expecting to be traded while the lockout was going on...then most likely.. if not.. hell no. It was pretty known though he would be out of Washington this year, so who knows.

does he want to play at all? is he in any kind of shape? I'm Luke warm on this move. i was hoping they would do something that had a better chance of improving the team. they still might. this is like throwing something against the wall and hoping that it sticks. im glad they didnt give up much.

Some responses over at Extremeskins.com regarding the Patriots:

"I went over there (patsfans.com) and they were stunned, but also surprisingly happy about the trade"

"When you have a history of getting the best out of difficult players, there's probably no reason not to be happy."

"Of course they're happy, they are the kings of trading peanuts for talented but troublesome malcontents and producing career years, before flipping them again for even more draft picks."

"When you have a history of getting the best out of difficult players, there's probably no reason not to be happy."

"There gotta be clause inthere that the patriots can't just turn around and trade him"

"Hmmm. That pick is roughly equivalent to a 6th rounder this year. Haynesworth has a team friendly contract and the bonus money that was such a sticking point is obviously gone for good. Weren't we getting better offers for Haynesworth last season? Why did we wait to trade him if we were willing to settle for so little in the end? "

Yeah, if he gets Braylon Edwards, BB will be working on a Trifecta! I also think it shows that Belichick feels he can get some mileage out of cutting Randy Moss after a couple of weeks of nonsense last year. Big Albert knows that he ain't no Randy Moss and will be gone in a nanosecond if he causes a problem.

This trade isn't as haphazard as many of you think it is. Remember that Floyd Reese was the GM of the Titans at the time Haynesworth was there, so there was definitely plenty of inside information to go around before they pulled the trigger on this trade.

EEI said that Haynesworth was a teammate of Alge Crumpler at TN too. FWIW

How do you feel about Bush taking his talents to South Beach?

Not happy about it. I don't think Miami knows how to use bush correctly and he will only have a marginal impact. Bush has been playing behind one of the better OL in the NFL for years. Miami's OL is not that great. I think they will over play him and he will get hurt,,, um again. Plus they don't have the weapons we have, and good QB play, so he's not much of a mismatch for defenses playing Miami. Id be surprised if he did well there.

We needed him because when we have thomas, colston, moore, meachum, and david thomas on the field with bush, he is a mismatch nightmare, you can't put a LB on him, and he's brilliant at sweeps, and short slants. So he kills the blitz on brees.
Bush can be on his game, Like the cardinals playoff game, and almost win it single handed, and then he can almost single handedly lose you a game, lol, Like Dallas last year or Seattle.
Hes an Xfactor, but not a full time talent, like Johnson. He can't pull the weight of a team.
Losing him, it will seriously hurt the way defenses cover our WR,TE's,RB and we might not be able to maintain the #1 offense in the NFL we have enjoyed sense 2006. We might have to come to terms with that, or find another threat to plug into his spot, like Brad smith, maybe.

I think the only teams besides N.O. where he could be effective is, Patriots, Eagles, colts, and chargers. But wish him the best, we know he did the best he could, he just cost to much.

we offered Reggie Bush deal with the Saints, per league source: Two years, $9.75 million. He gets $5 million in 2011. thats pretty fair for his roll.

I like this, very low risk, pretty low cost, for potentially having the best Dline in the NFL. I bet Mayo has to do a lot less work this season with VW and AH infront of him.

I think this will be an instant upgrade to our interior pass rush and run D.

OTOH, I can't think of a single personnel move that Bill Belichick has made that had a lasting negative effect on the locker room. On the contrary, he's made plenty of moves that people suspected might, but ultimately did not, and had positive effect on the field (Dillon, Moss).

And when Moss soured, we cut him, and barely missed a beat.

Afalius might be the only guy that we really sorely missed the boat on - but we got OK production out of him before he turned into a malcontent.

Pardon me if my comments are redundant, but I wasn't reading 19 pages this morning.

1. I was like so many here. Shocked when I first heard it, then the more I thought about it the more I liked it. Low risk (what amounts to a 2012 LOW 6th rounder) super high reward.

2. To those who might claim that BB could have waited a few days until he was cut, but who knows where he might have ended up and at what price. Quick question - is the $5.4MM guaranteed or can the pats cut him before the season at no cap cost?

3, This reminds me a bit of the time when BB grabbed another high first round pick, Jonathan Sullivan off the scrap heap. Unfortunately Sullivan was still a turd and didn't make it until September. Low risk high reward.

4. The more I think about it, this trade is more about the evolution of the NFL passing game in recent years. The use of short drops and spread offenses have limited the effectiveness of outside rushers. Its the INSIDE rush that has become more important. Its not even getting sacks that are key. Its getting the QB to come out of his rhythm. Making him FEEL the heat. This forces him to throw immediately to his first option who can be squeezed or jumped by the defense.

Now rushing from the middle is also the easiest for the offense to defend hand hardest for the defense to accomplish. When motivated, Haynesworth HAS the very rare ability to provide that pressure consistently.

5. For those who are worried about Albert's past disdain for the 3-4. I wouldn't worry about it much. This situation could be just what he wanted. I would guess he would get most of his snaps (assuming he makes the team, as a situational pass rusher in the Pats sub packages either as a 3-4 DE or as a 4-3 DT. IIRC his objection was being asked to be an every down NT. With the Pats being some kind of a 4 or 2 man alignments more tan 50% of the time, he'll get enough snaps to impact the game, but wouldn't be counted on to HAVE to be an every down DLman

BOTTOM LINE, IF, and that's a big IF, Haynesworth can become an impact pass rusher up the middle, then the entire Pats pass rush has become a LOT better, and his impact will make BOTH OLBs more effective. So this trade could be HUGE.....or it could just be a shot in the dark that is, as the bard might say is , "much ado about nothing". As for the fans, TC just became THAT much more interesting

This is amazing, I am so happy. We finally got our pass rusher and O' by the way, he is also a great run stopper. This is 06-07 all over again. We had the worst recieving corp in the NFL and we traded for Randy Moss, a mal-content from Oakland. Then we had the best WR's in the league. This year we had an issue with our front seven. We traded for a mal-content from Washington, Now we have the best front seven in the NFL. Thats right I said it. When you pair Haynsworth with Big Vince, that is a true force.
I think this means we go more to the 4-3 and run the defense that Minnesota ran a couple of years ago when those two stud Williams guys were immovables on the defensive interior.

Remember we played them on a Monday night and we threw almost non-stop?

Well, our secondary is much better than there's was. So now opposing offensive coordinators can't: 1) run the ball on us; 2) can't throw effectively downfield; 3) opposing QB's have to worry about interior push.

This defense is awesome and can only be beaten by a Michael Vick running away from pressure and getting lucky with long bombs.

BTW, on the other hand this guy is a much bigger risk than Randy Moss. Haynesworth just. gave. up. in Washington.

Moss was merely mailing it in.

There is a difference.

But in Vince I trust.

I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH CAMP WITH NATE SOLDER GOING ONE ON ONE WITH THIS GUY. It reminds me of when Willie McGinest came in and had good camp duels against Pat Harlow in the early 1990s.

Except these two are so much bigger.

Excellent point. And wasn't this somewhat heavily rumored before the season last year, that the Pats were pursuing Haynesworth?
