OMG, never would have seen this coming , he defiantly fits a need for your DL.
ITs a major upgrade to your run/pass D, that just got 100% better, usually need 2 guys to block AH. I mean he is a super talent, when he cares....hmm...but like when we stepped on that guys head in Tenn. with his cleats .... he is not a nice person, lol

I think someone should start a poll called " Guess # of AH unsportman like conduct penalties for the year"

Well I guess if anyone can turn him around and make him focus on doing his job BB can.

Hope this works out. congrats pats fans.

That's interesting.

On his position:
I see this as RDE, not NT.
He was very unhappy playing NT is a 3-4, as noted.

Compare him to Gerard Warren. Warren was listed at 330; Haynesworth is listed at 335. Let's assume both listings are generous.

While Seymour played the position at an elite level while listed at 300, Belichick has been playing larger players at the position as guards and tackles have gotten bigger.

The RDE position is not so different from a 4-3 tackle, and should be a bit more fun.

I share some of the behavior concerns. The stomping incident with Gurode resulted in the worst on-field suspension in the history of the NFL. He's been a real bad guy in the past.

Hopefully he gives the Pats two strong years for the 2013 fifth rounder. Pretty low risk.

Further, by commanding a double at the point, he should open some space in case the Patriots play a ROLB...

[. If he plays, we're in like Flynt. If he reverts to being a headcase, or his trial goes bad, etc, then he's outta here and we're no worse off.

Hey Gweed usually the saying is we are in like Flynn but now that you are wide awake
I am sure you are referring to Larry Flynt of Hustler mag. Good One

I think he was subconsciously thinking of the 60's spy movie which had tons of hot chicks besides being terrible.

On topic, this is exactly the KIND of pass rush the Pats need. An inside rush into the face of guys like Manning and Sanchize. The reason we always kill the Steelers is that for all their pass rush it is all outside and Brady can avoid that with ease.

Don't let these guys step up in the pocket and the battle is won!

Beaten by Italia, another OLD MAN like myself no doubt!

I am not being a troll here: how good is Haynesworth? The only time I saw him was last year, when frankly he sort of showed nothing on the field. I know he was ridiculously highly paid, but that's about it.

What are his strengths? Bull rush? Speed? Mainly the run stopping?

Wikipedia reminds me he stomped someone's head like a jerk, fails conditioning tests, and publicly questions coach decisions.

So I guess the big question is: will he come around to the Patriot Way?

Looks like the first victims are Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush week 1.

No one can really answer this except to say that if he doesn't, no harm done. The trade is so low risk that if he busts, we just cut/trade him.

But if he does come around....

If he stomps LT I wont mind too much.

Living in D.C. we've been swamped with Haynesworth, plus I've seen most of his games here. Here's my take:
- He's not motivated by winning, rings, or anything like that. He is selfish, he craves attention and praise. He thinks he belongs in the HOF, at least.
- All he wants to do is cause disruption, get in the back field, blow things up. Much of that involves free-lancing. He just wants the ball to be snapped and to unleash his fury, no brainwork. I don't know how this fits into a BB defense, but I love the idea of backfield havoc. Being told to do anything else will make him shutdown and act like a 2-year old.
- He won't 2-gap. That's his problem with the 3-4, not strictly playing NT as some are saying. He won't want to play DE 2-gap responsibilities either.
- I don't think he's going to be motivated by being spoken to by leaders on the team (e.g. Wilfork) as if he's a head-case, because he doesn't think he is--he thinks he just keeps getting a bad rap. The better approach is to treat him with (false) respect and encourage him. Much like a 2-year old again.
- When he was allowed to create havoc last year, he was amazing, particularly on short-yardage.

This should be interesting to watch. I don't think he is going to "play right DE in the 3-4", that job is too complex for him. I think it will all be situational, even if it is a lot of snaps. It could be as simple as letting the other 10 guys on defense know that on this call Haynesworth is lining up here and is going forward or doing a stunt or who knows what, and everybody else respond accordingly. I know that is completely un-BB, but I don't see how else it can work!

Just saw on Twitter From Caplan. Haynesworth's salary 5.4 million salary this year is NOT guaranteed due to his missing minicamps last season.

This makes it even easier to cut ties with Haynesworth should he act up.

I swear I can hear the Jets fans laughing their ass off.

WHY? ....You must be a jest fan....seriously, a 5th for Haynesworth and the skins are absorbing most of the cash?....what's not to like? Unless u are a Jest fan I guess..

He was an absolute beast in 2008 - AH's final season in Tenn.

NFL

8.5 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries and 50+ plus tackles. I like him short term because he has something to prove.

Sacking Cutler

Do people seriously only watch the Patriots and take no notice of the rest of the NFL?

That's even better news. Haynesworth has 5m reasons to get with the program, otherwise he won't be seeing any new money from the Pats. He'll end up cut and probably looking at a vet min job at best. Most likely though if the Pats give up on him, no other team will touch him with a 10 foot pole except maybe the Jets.

If Haynesowrth puts it together though this has the potential to be a steal of the new decade type move. He's still only 30 and in his prime physically. It's what's between the ears that worries me. Really looking forward to seeing how BB uses AH as well. At his best, the guy disrupts offenses and is a gamechanger.

Re: Pats get haynesworth

When I first heard this I was like WHAT THE BLEEP!!?!?!

But now that I see it's a 5th round pick and we only have to eat a bit of his contract I feel much better. But still, this guy is a proven locker room Cancer, so I'm still leery. Hopefully BB lays down the law to him and keeps him on a short leash.

People on here are gonna be doing more back peddling than the Pittsburgh offensive line.

I think this is going to be a reward because Haynesworth really like the Patriots organization. This is what he said about the Pats in 2009 after hurting Brady's shoulder in a preseason game.

"I'm actually a big Tom Brady fan. I'm a big Patriots fan," Haynesworth added. "I've always like the Patriots, I've always liked Coach [Bill] Belichick. I just like the way [Brady] is."

I had to laugh out loud when I read his quote in this article:
"It was good, it was fine. I mean, I was trying to tackle him, but I wasn't trying to hurt him. I'm not that type of a player, you know?"

Something tells me he is trying to shed his "stomper" image and that might work out well for BB.

Love the trade, low risk, high reward, blah blah blah. Time will tell how he takes to the system, if he's in shape and motivated, and whether he can keep his nose out of trouble here. But the fact remains there's almost no risk in making this move so kudos to the staff for addressing a need with someone who could be the best in the league at what he does (when motivated).
