Default Sun-Sentinel: Bibby to sign with Heat.

The Sun Sentinel is reporting that, following today's buyout from Washington, Bibby plans on signing with Miami. That would give them the pure PG they've been lacking.

Miami Heat: Mike Bibby plans to join Miami Heat, with Troy Muprhy also a possible addition - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Quote:
MIAMI —
A pair of independent sources have confirmed to the Sun Sentinel that veteran point guard Mike Bibby is leaning toward signing with the Miami Heat in the wake of Monday's buyout from the Washington Wizards.

Bibby, acquired last week from the Atlanta Hawks at the NBA trading deadline, agreed, according to multiple reports, to bypass his $6.2 million 2011-12 salary from the Wizards in order to move to a contender.

Tuesday is the deadline for players to be waived in order to appear on another team's playoff roster. If released by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, players can sign with new teams at any time before the season finale and become playoff eligible.

Bibby, 32, with his playmaking and shooting, would provide the Heat with an instant upgrade over current starting point guard Mario Chalmers, although he would not address the Heat's lack of defensive deterrence at the position.

LeBron was one of the guys talking to Bibby the most. He and Wade couldn't understand why Atlanta would just let him walk. I'm sure he and Wade realize that the Heat's ceiling is a lot higher with a pure PG than it is without one. On top of that, Bibby's defensive struggles won't be as prominent as the Heat have one of the top defenses in the league.

Also, the Celtics were reported to be one of the team interested in him as well.

Man I hope not ... no way KG would allow a loafer aboard.

I'm sure Celtics fans would have a hard time envisioning Bibby in a green and white uniform as well. After all, "RONDO'S BETTER" right?

ESPN is now reporting that F Troy Murphy has signed with the Celtics. Damn. I was really hoping that the Heat could reel him in too, with Haslem out at least another month. Good pick up, C's.

I think the biggest part in the C's signing Murphy was keeping him from the Heat. He would've been a great fit for Miami - and still is for Boston, but honestly will have a lesser role, particularly if and when some of the old bigs for the C's come back. Keeping him from Miami was a huge win.

The Bibby thing - it's positive for Miami, no doubt. But as a Boston fan, I didn't have much interest in him. He's a similar player to Delonte - albeit maybe healthier.

I don't know if Bibby is the complete answer for Miami's point guard woes, but he helps. From what I have seen of him this year when we played ATL, he isn't the distributor and playmaker he once was, but he can still shoot, and that will be very important for them. Defensively, I don't think he does much with their problems in guarding Rondo.

An improvement, for sure, but not the answer to the Heat's problems against elite teams. Ultimately, Bibby or not, that falls upon their big three's ability to mesh without a PG of the caliber of a Rondo or D-Will or CP3. Their big 3 will still have to create, but now they have a PG that will knock down the open shot confidently.

Signing Murphy was most definitely a win for the Celtics. Now the Heat will have to wait for Haslem to come back, and then pray that he comes back completely healthy. From what I hear, that isn't for another month. As for Bibby, it will take a bit for him to comfortably mesh with the big three, but I would expect more passes out of him in Miami as opposed to Atlanta or Washington. There are simply more options higher up on the pecking order. However, I wouldn't be uncomfortable with Bibby taking the final shot either. He's an instant upgrade at the three point line over Chalmers. He's actually enjoying the best season of his career from three point land.

As for the Celtics, their game is their big men. While losing Perkins is going to hurt, you add Troy Murphy, a guy with size and good perimeter shooting ability. You'll also get Shaq back at some point. I have to admit, though, I don't see how Shaq makes it through a playoff series without getting hurt. But he'll definitely make a welcome addition back to the line up.

With all of that said, the Heat have an absolutely brutal stretch of games ahead of them with a losing record to teams over .500. It will be imperative that Bibby picks up the system as quickly as he can. Spoelstra seems to think he can do it.

Bibby can contribute in the short term just by spotting up and hitting his jumpers. I agree he won't come in immediately and mesh right away, but his jump shooting makes him an asset in the meanwhile.

I agree about Shaq - it scares me to think we're banking on him being healthy for a postseason that ultimately spans about 2 months. I think Ainge is looking at the postseason and seeing Miami & Chicago as the big threats and thinking neither Perk nor Shaq would be the key there. So as a Celts fan, you just hope Shaq is healthy if we end up facing Orl or LA.

I think with Murphy & Krstic Ainge sees two guys whose defense will be good enough when paired with KG. Neither are known as defensive presences, but KG can make up for it. Whether we have Shaq or Perk or none, if KG goes down, this team goes down.

Bibby has officially signed with Miami and will be wearing number 0 (the ugliest jersey number). He'll suit up for the first time tomorrow night against Orlando and should eventually take over the job as the starter.
