Belichick screwed this up.

It happens.

But it's not a lost cause.

Mac didn't learn not to throw balls up for grabs during the last 3 weeks.

Harsh message from Belichick, but you had to know he would've expected Mac to learn and not do that.

Belichick has a problem now, part of his own making. But it's also on the player. Belichick has lost some trust in him.

DON'T THROW INTs Mac!!
Or off your back foot too many times.

this is a tough one. Zappe wasn’t good last night, but he was asked to do too much. He inherited a 10 pt deficit, scored 2 tds on each of the first 2 possessions to put us ahead, then the d proceeded to give up scores on chicago’s next 5 possessions . If the game was close at the end, chicago probably wouldve just kept scoring and never would’ve had to punt at all. The fumble before half didn’t look like his fault, and trent brown’s tripping penalty definitely wasn’t. At this point in his career he’s obviously not overcoming that especially against a tough d, actually probably no qb is. yes, you would have liked to see a little more from him but i dont think its very indicative, think everyone was pretty deflated out there thanks to an abysmal outing on d.

Mac , it’s easily the lowest confidence in him has been at since he was drafted. He’s been really bad this year and has never looked comfortable, or display the poise zappe has in the pocket. But its also early to give up on the guy after a promising rookie campaign.

I know after last night’s mishandling its tough right now to think this way but i still believe bb will make the proper decision here. Question is do we have that guy between these 2.

He really set Jones for failure. He refused to name a starter. He let it known both QBs would play. And then he threw Jones out there with a hostile crowd to him (there were even Zappe banners) with him knowing he had a short leash and right off the bat they asked him to play a vertical offense against a really good pass defense.

It is on Jones for wilting under the pressure, but Belichick really put him in a bad place.
Jones was wilting under the pressure before this. It wasn't like he played bad because of that. He just has been playing bad football for half a season now including the end of last year. He's not Eli Manning, he doesn't have a horseshoe shoved up his but, he can't just close his eyes and heave the ball in the general vicinity of his receivers.

Mac got his chance, and just threw an inexcusable interception to the Bears defense. BB probably saw it all practice and that was it for him. I think it was still stupid on his part to a) split reps all week, b) start Mac over Zappe. Zappe came in and lit it up, but the Bears already had some confidence in them. This is the NFL, there are no teams that don't have extremely talented players that can light you up. If you let a team get it in their head they can win, anything can happen. I think BB did the one thing he preached never to do, which was overlook a team. He thought his defense could handle them, and if his offense didn't perform, that's ok. He put a rookie, Zappe in a bad position of having to come in and win the game. He's still a rookie. Yet he came out and really energized that offense, ultimately he wasn't able to pull it out, but the difference was night and day.

BB had better ride Zappe for the rest of the year.

"Could Belichick have handled the QB situation any worse?"

Sure. He could have started Amanda.

We can harp on the pitiful D, especially in the 2nd half - but what if the whole team felt like Meyers did - which was a bit of betrayal by the coaching staff. BB needs to fix this in the locker room today.
I just don't believe all the "Mac is done" talk. You don't lose all that pedigree and mental processing in a few games.
But, playing tight in fear of the hook WILL ruin his year (and career here). Coaches need to make a strong statement and publicly declare Mac as the starter, and put all their time into working on a scheme that fits.

If we really want to get to a root causes it's:
a) Josh leaving
b) changing the offense
c) Not bringing in BOB. Jabba the Matt has been OK but he is not a QB whisperer.
d) Mac playing undisciplined, trying to do too much, pressing and turning the ball over.

I still think Mac got hurt in preseason and they are playing down that injury but whatever. No excuses.

This thread is turning into a Mac vs Zappe conversation, going to merge threads.

It's been more than a few. It's like the last 8 games going back to last season.

I was all for the benching of Mac especially when the team rallied and took the lead with Zappe.

He took a calculated risk that unfortunately blew up in his face because of how poor Zappe and the offense played. Zappe probably should have had at least another pick because his throws kept getting tipped

Now we're back to having a QB controversy.

I think the issue people have is that zappe fever fans are making every excuse in the book to downplay his bad performance. After they spent weeks insulting those who want to just give Mac more time for excusing his bad play.
good grief it's possible to evaluate each player independently. This childish tribal Zappe fever or camp Mac stuff is just ********. The reality is Mac has struggled and it goes back to last years bye week. Zappe has looked better against worse teams but is a rookie and we haver a very small sample size and against the one half decent team so far struggled badly. It's highly possible neither of them are the answer and the team will now just career from one qb to another until we hit on a lucky punt in the draft in 20 years time.

The story of the game is how bad the D played. You don't give up 245 yards on the ground and not have that be a major reason why you lost.

This is on BB.
And it's not only this QB mishandling. It began with his ego not hiring an actual Offensive staff, like say a OC, playcaller, QB coach with even 1 game of experience in those roles.
I honestly believe Patricia became available and he wanted to hire him but his son was DC so he just spun his wheels all off season and stuck him as the head of offense

The defense was atrocious no question. Unfortunately offense wasn't much better. They ran a total of six offensive plays in 18 minutes between the entire third and part of the fourth. The offensive issues aren't all on Zappe but he looked absolutely awful the entire second half.

I'm actually surprised they didn't put Jones back in

Due in large part because the D couldn't stop a nose bleed.

Stalled offensive drives are part of that too.

Zap kept putting the Pat's defense back on the field.
