Well, it's the deadest part of the offseason before training camp. So I figured this would be a fun thread to start. List your top ten favorite games complete with the years in which they were played and explain why you rank them where you ranked them. The only catch here is that you cannot include the Super Bowl victories. I think we can all safely say that the Super Bowl victories are our favorite games so it only makes sense to exclude them and list the rest. However, you can include ANY regular season and/or playoff game from any year that you would like. Old timers can include games from the 70's. Newer Pats fans can include games from the last ten years.
10. 2003 - Divisional Playoffs vs. Tennessee Titans.
-Just a physical gut check of a game. Played on the coldest day of the year in New England, this one was pretty memorable. For me, it marked the beginning of our march toward a dynasty.
9. 1994 - Week 17 vs. Miami Dolphins.
-To my memory, this was the first Pats game I ever watched. I only have a few memories of it, but I do remember the Pats taking the Dolphins into overtime and Bledsoe icing it with a TD pass. This was the first of a couple of times in which Bledsoe torched the Dolphins for 300+ yards and 4 TD passes.
8. 2007 - Duel in Dallas, Week 6 @ Dallas Cowboys.
-This will be one of three games from the 2007 season to make my list. This game marked the first huge nationally televised test for that Pats team and marked the beginning of a time in which the entire world collectively stood back and said "whoa" at that team. In front of a nationally televised audience, the Pats marched into Dallas and slaughtered the team that would eventually go on to win the NFC and post one of the better records in football that year. Brady led the way with 5 TD's.
7. 1996 - AFC Championship vs. Jacksonville Jaguars.
-This marked the first time in which I finally got to see my favorite team advance to the Super Bowl. We beat the upstart Jags that year. Little did I know what would proceed to happen in the weeks following that glorious AFCCG victory...
6. 2007 - Week 13 @ Baltimore Ravens.
-The great escape. Against a hungry defense, the Pats have to gut check one taking the game to the final seconds before Brady delivers a beautiful pass into the back of the end zone to Gaffney. But all rights, this is a game which we should have lost. Even after that pass, Boller was able to complete a Hail Mary which almost went for a TD. Truly a game which came down to the final seconds.
5. 2006 - AFC Wild Card vs. New York Jets.
-After splitting with the Jets and having to hear constant sh!t from their fans about how the student was going to surpass the teacher, nothing felt better than blowing them out in the Wild Card round of the AFC Playoffs. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of that game.
4. 2002 - Week 17 vs. Miami Dolphins.
-After losing to the Dolphins earlier in the year in Miami, the Pats return in Week 17 to avenge it in an overtime thriller which saw them take out Miami and at least end an easily forgotten season on a good note with a 27-24 overtime victory against the Dolphins.
3. 2007 - Week 9 @ Indianapolis Colts.
-After the way the 2006 season ended, nothing felt better than going into Indy and getting a win over Manning and the Colts. This game was by no means, comfortable though. The Colts roared out to an early lead but couldn't escape the dagger of Brady and the Pats coming back for a big win. I remember I was watching this at a bar filled with Indy fans. I happened to be one of the few Pats fans that were there and the only one who sat outside to watch the game. All game long, I caught flak from them. But, as the old saying goes, he who laughs last laughs loudest.
2. 2004 - AFC Divisional Playoffs vs. Indianapolis Colts.
-There are really so many games which I could put into this slot. But this game deserves it. I was a senior in high school when this one was played. I remember honestly thinking that we weren't going to win this game during the week. With the injuries to our secondary, I didn't see how we could beat Manning and those receivers. On top of that, 2004 was a season in which the Colts set the world on fire offensively and they had just posted 50+ points against the Broncos the week before. Boy was I wrong. The Pats completely set the tone on both sides of the ball. On defense, they completely confused Manning and shut him down with a two deep zone and some excellent tackling on the shorter routes. Many times we saw the Manning face. On top of that, they were just far more physical than the Colts that day (remember Asante's lone huge headhunting hit?). On offense, they proceeded to shove the ball down the Colts throat with two drives which last over 8 minutes. On top of that, Brady played flawless football as the Pats showed the Colts just how far they needed to go. Complete domination ended in a 20-3 score. Afterward, I knew this team was going to the Super Bowl. We would be playing Pittsburgh and they had stunk up the joint. Great victory.
1. 2001 - The Snow Game, AFC Divisional Playoffs vs. Oakland Raiders.
-Honestly, what else was I going to put here? I've only been watching football since the mid-90's but I have a feeling that a lot of old timers will be putting this one up there as well. This was truly the beginning of a dynasty. A lot of people point this out to be the "Tuck Rule" game, but I don't even think about that when remembering this game. I remember Brady telling Mr. Kraft that they were going to get that one before game and smiled. Gut check time once again. A hard fought game enters overtime as Brady grows up in front of the eyes of the NFL viewing world. This also marked the first of many times that Brady set up the team for a game-winning field goal by Adam Vinatieri. The kick is good, and the Pats win the game 16-13 in OT. Next week, they marched into Pittsburgh and proceeded on a path toward a dynasty. What a great game. What a great season.
