The situation is straightforward. We have an backup in Ryan, who can play in situations where a safety might be usually used. We have starters in McCourty and Harmon.

The OPEN question is who will Belichick choose as the special teamers who will be the #3 safety? Also, who will be the emergency #4 or even #5 safety.

This is not straightforward. Ryan has had VERY limited experience at Safety and there's no proof he'll be a back up safety.

Ryan might actually be the #2 CB on this team. Browner is not the clear cut #2CB, and he's out for the first 4 weeks anyways.

Yeah man, Chung is definitely one of the poster boys in my mind for the cringe worthy secondary we were stuck with for so long that was capable of blowing every lead at any time.

Agreed.

It's a shame that this wasn't improved upon already (from a fan's POV, which doesn't mean I am correct), but there's certainly reason to believe that there will be some growing pains there this season. Then again, maybe Harmon steps up and really looks alright. Only time will tell.

You don't know that. Ryan was a rookie last year. For all we know he could make the 2nd year leap and surpass both of those guys on the depth chart.

Arrington once had 7 INTs in a season. That must mean he's better than Ryan.

I think that Ryan could certainly be in the mix to battle with Dennard for starting CB opposite Revis in the first 4 games.

After that, he'll likely be anywhere from CB2 to nickel CB to dime CB, depending upon various factors--injuries obviously included. Either way, I think he'll see more than his 55% of snaps from last year, if you include the postseason.

I just think of Chung like I do Meriweather or Spikes.

Could have been what we were looking for, looked like for a time they might be, ended up not being able to make the transition into the pros.

I dont blame Belichick for the attempts to find his next Rodney Harrison-like enforcer.

I'm assuming that the selection of Wilson was due to what Belichick perceived as versatility to play different roles in the secondary with athleticism, although of course that's just my opinion. As crazy as it sounds, I still wouldn't be surprised to see him stick for one more year due to the rather unflattering competition that currently resides at the S2-S3-S4 spots (aside from Harmon, who is still somewhat undetermined).

The Wilson comment was more to show that I'm not just being rah rah Belichick.

Unlike Chung, I agree that the door hasn't closed on Wilson.. at least I share that opinion. I just happen to think that Wilson was no Easley.. that is a player Belichick had to take then or lose him to another team. Everything seems to suggest that Wilson would have been there a couple rounds later.

Over-reaching is more a head-banger in my opinion than taking a chance on a talented college player and then having that player not be able to make the transition.

No GM has been able to determine what the formula for that is.

Yeah, right---the over-reaching aspect is certainly the notable from that WTF type of pick, much more than the inability to successfully make the transition (at least as of yet, anyway). I definitely agree.
