Drake Maye isn't going to learn by sitting on the sidelines watching an inferior QB take the snaps. Get him in there.

No QB learns because of the QB starting. They learn working on their mechanics and reads without the pressure of live play. If he goes in there and the line is getting him killed, he's not going to develop the habits he needs to succeed longterm. More likely he falls back on more amatuerish habits and doesn't have the time to slow the game down and deveop what he needs.

Or he regresses even further and immediately upon taking the snap assumes the fetal position.
A play known to longtime Pats fans as "The Eason"™

Exactly. People retroactively want to pretend Mac, for insatnce, was always awful. But the truth was he was a high floor, low ceiling QB and pretty much did that in 2021. But the more he felt pressure in our **** offense, he never got the chance to improve and slowly lost confidence and started regressing and the high floor eroded

You absolutely can hang a QB out to dry too early and mismanage their development and ruin them. There's never been a QB who sat that was hurt by sitting. Working on fudnamentals and waiting for the team to hit a level of competency is not going to undermine development. We've seen plenty of QB's start out looking like they had something and then breaking down under the pressure of a bad team and not having the time to really hone their craft.

I really don't get this need for instant gratification with Maye. He could be the second coming of Tom Brady and we are still a worse team than the 2019 team that got bounced by the Titans. There's literally no stakes right now on a need to fight for a Super Bowl. The only goal should be developing Maye as best as possible.

I think that Maye will get plenty of experience if he were to play the same number of games that he played last year.

This is the best argument I’ve read for exercising caution with Maye. The most damning thing about proponents of playing Maye now is they almost universally fail to address the heightened possibility of injury due to our poor OL. They just will not talk about it (unless I’ve missed a post).

He's only 21 and has serious skills and potential (he's NOT Mac Jones). Sit him and unleash him on the NFL with a solid OL and upgraded overall offensive talent in 2025. Better to do that then put him in there with a horrible OL and get him seriously injured if not destroy his career before it even starts.

Some people here seem to think the only way Maye will develop as a player is under center.

It won't hurt him to sit awhile before getting his feet wet.

I would like to see the Pats get thru the trip to England before considering putting him in, though in theory - i am not advocating for an injury to Trevor Lawrence - it would be cool to see Drake Maye face off with Mac Jones in Yë O?dé M?rry ?n??àn? for our trip across the pond...

Look… I’ll be happy if he’s better than Mac Jones. Not asking for much but that was some bad QB play.

When Brady says something that means a lot.. not sure where everyone else is getting the idea of starting maye behind a dysfunctional O-line

You didn't proof read the title of this thread?

Why would any coaching staff ever "allow" a player to "make "mistakes"?

Maybe we should sit Maye for all 4 years of his rookie deal. That way he is guaranteed not to get injured.

Tell that to Jordan Love and Patrick Mahomes
The jury is still out on Jordan Love. As for Mahomes, he is the exception and not the rule. Look at all the rest of the best active QBs in the NFL and the vast majority of them played significant time their rookie seasons.

If Maye doesn’t see serious action this season then that’s admitting the pick was a disaster.

When should Maye start and be allowed to start making mistakes?

When the OL isn’t part of the opposing team’s pass rush.

I won’t say anything more because I don’t want to take valuable band width away from Sam, as I know he has some thoughts on this subject.

When they realize that every player makes mistakes . Or they could go with your option and never field a team.
