Eye-black painted across half his face in an indoor stadium (at night no less) elevates JJM to Elite Tool Bag on the Tool Bag chart

I don’t know, Nix has been really good as the Broncos QB.

Nix had a shocking year last year, and that is great for him. He does not overwhelm. He is just reliable and consistent. Payton can take a player like that a long way with his offense. Kudos to Payton for identifying his guy and going to get him.

Don't talk about Sam's hero that way.

Drake Maye is the ONLY possible vote based on tape, history, skills, ability etc. I don't see any reason someone would vote for JJ other than the "eh, always a chance" vote.
JJ has too many unknowns. He could be a bust, he could be great but nothing on tape says he will likely be great while a ton of tape says Maye will likely be great.

Could I also point out DCs around the league have had a year to watch Maye and are just getting to look at JJ.

There have been a fair number of QBs who look great their first year (Mac, CJ Stroud, RG3) and then DCs figure their game out.

This is in addition to the observation that JJ looked like **** yesterday

Nix is solid but he is a in a great system for him so he's going to look better than he would on many other teams. He probably landed in the one spot that can maximize his potential. However, he's played a ton of football so what upside is there?

As Brady stated, people don't spend enough time analyzing the OC and the offense and too much time relying on stats and wins and losses.

Mahomes was putting up the best numbers in the NFL when the team was #1 in separation rate on catches. Since that stat dropped and guys are not the most open in the NFL his stats are middle of the pack. Compare stats from 2018-2022 to 2023-2025. He still has a hall of fame OC. Apparently, the QB can look good or bad depending on what's around him.

Analyzing QB's is difficult without watching every play they make. There is a reason Mac Jones had a good day yesterday and it is not because Mac Jones is that good.

To me, Daniels is still showing to be the only QB conclusively better than Maye in that class.

There’s debatable guys. Nix has had a perfect system under Sean Payton to coddle him, and even now looks erratic this year. Like a better Mac Jones. Penix also looks good, but is still a little too early to determine fully.
Hopefully we can all agree that Caleb Williams was not the guy to take.

I was concerned Maye and Daniels would go first and we would have Williams fall to us.

I didn’t want him.

I think you are right. There is a reason that Sam Darnold was refurbed by SF and did well in Minnesota. Shanahan and O'Connell can utilize what they see in a QB. That isn't to say that the Vikings made a mistake by letting him go either. I think O'Connell will get JJ to come around, but its going to take time and that stinks because that team is so stacked. I don't think JJ will be better than Maye. In the first few years of the Brady Bunch, he was a system QB until he great into the GOAT. I think Charlie really dialed in that system for Tom in the first 3 years, and by 2004 Tom took over. That is not an insult to Josh who came over in 2006. Josh has developed into his own offensive mind. People being impatient with Drake are just silly. Ya, I want to see him sling 400 yards and 4 TD a game. That would be fun, but its not reality for a 22 year old kid who has a horrible foundation from last year. He will grow in this system, and when he is ready we will see him bloom into using all his skills.

Mac is still Mac. He will mess it up.

You mean the WEEK ONE PEPSI OFFENSIVE PLAYER?

Apparently he's not throwing to his left according to the play charts.
NFL teams, even bad ones, will pick up on this very quickly.

Tom Brady was never a system QB. He led the NFL in TD passes in 2002 and got MVP votes in 2003.

Yes. Brady was never a system QB at any time in his career.

A little refreshing to see a different team on their #3 LT in week 2

Once Maye learns how to throw players open, he will join the elites. He has many chances to do that but just aimed to hit the receivers while better placement will have yielded nice YAC. Growing pains and hope Josh is showing him all those opportunities and what he could have done.
JJ reminds me of Mac, right at or almost at his ceiling time now.

People fall in love too quickly. QBs in WAS, HOU, MIN, LAC…. People need to be more patient to better assess.

Better asses

Just saw a First Things First segment in which Eric Mangini stated Sam Darnold and Drake Maye are the same guy. I found it horribly inaccurate. Darnold is nowhere near the athlete Maye is. This was during the Mahomes Mountain segment.

You have no clue what your are talking about. It was the perfect combo of system and brain that made him become the GOAT. This is not an insult or derogatory. The stars aligned. Yes, the system was perfect.
