I don't see a case for him over any of these guys. He is closer to a top 15 QB than 5 imo.

Can't say with certainty I would take him over Starr, Unitas, or Staubach either.

When it comes to Tarkenton, Young, Rodgers and Favre, I think they're right there with Brees somewhere. Total tossup.

That list is okay but I'd move Mahomes up a bit, ahead of Elway, Manning and Staubach

Meant to say "in no particular order". Other than Brady and Montana, I'm kinda agnostic on the particulars of where the next tranche is ranked, since you can make arguments for one or the other, depending on what matters more between stats, winning pct, Super Bowl wins, comebacks, etc.

Brady and Montana are clearly 1 and 2. That is undisputeable imo. Nobody has a case over either.

I would put Mahomes at 3 because he was a better postseason QB than Manning. I don't penalize Mahomes for taking a lesser (they were that year. Smoke and mirrors) Chiefs team to the SB and getting obliterated by the Eagles. Just as I don't give Peyton any credit whatsoever for that 2015 SB "win". He was dragged there by an all-time great defense.

However, I don't think Mahomes will ever surpass Brady. Fair or not, those two SB blowout losses and losing to Brady’s team twice will be held against him. Brady was great in his 20's and elite in his 30's and 40's. I think it will end up being the opposite for Mahomes.

This. You play for the ring, and SBs carry huge weight. The sheer wealth of wins by and under Brady is unapproachable at present. He’s had the wins where he put the team on his back, and the ones (early) when they carried him. His stats are up there w the best - he’s probably beyond the claim that he was a “system” guy by a 4- or 5-Ring margin.

Montana’s head and shoulders above the next tier. His teams had so much talent that you could say he did less than Brady with more. But he held on to a legit claim at being the GOAT until Tom’s last 2-3 rings.

You could put Bradshaw in just-sub-Montana tier, but I don’t think of him leading those teams, though ymmv.

Then it’s bar arguments all the way down, from there.

If you go back to the pre-Super Bowl era, I would put Graham right next to Montana.

In terms of Brees…

He won a Super Bowl in 2009
Rodgers won a Super Bowl in 2010

Both players would get to play another 10+ seasons in the NFC, where there were no other major dominant quarterbacks during this time.

Both had a few few bad teams, but overall also had some awesome teams and a lot of chances.

Neither returned to the Super Bowl again.

For whatever reason, Rogers is thought of as an underachiever who disappointed in the big games, but Brees has always gotten a pass.
