From the merger forward, where do you think our team ranks?

profootball-reference.com has a great website with lots of historical stats. According to their data, I would rank the NFL franchises (again, post-merger) using a simple formula.

Super Bowl wins- 6 points (that's the ultimate goal)
Conference championships- 3 points
Playoff appearances- 1 point

Keep in mind this is cumulative, so a Super Bowl season is actually 10 points (SB 6, CC 3, PA 1). In terms of winning percentage, that is really factored into playoff appearances. So, based on this criteria, here is how it played out. Not everyone will agree, but I think it is weighted fairly according to a franchise's impact and success.

Including this year's playoff births.

1. Dallas Cowboys- 91 (30, 32 29)
2. Pittsburgh Steelers- 77 (30, 24, 23)
3. San Francisco 49ers- 71 (30, 20, 21)
4. Oakland Raiders- 59 (18, 20, 21)
5. Washington Redskins- 54 (18, 20, 16)
6. Miami Dolphins- 53 (12, 20, 21)
tie. New England Patriots- 53 (18, 20, 15)
8. Green Bay Packers- 49 (18, 16, 15)
9. Denver Broncos- 47 (12, 18, 17)
10. Indy/Baltimore Colts-41 (12, 12, 17)
11. New York Giants- 37 (12, 12, 13)

*Cutoff at teams that have not won at least two Super Bowls

Eh, okay. No matter how we do it, it's random assignment of numbers to abstract and compare. We were there, we know what happened... I guess that's how I put it.

3 rings, going on 6, is another way...

Yeah, I'm not crazy about these kinds of things either--what's the point? Reminds me of those deals where they pick the "most liveable city" or something and it ends up being Pittsburgh. I mean, that's swell, but who wants to live in Pittsburgh? (No offense, Steeler fans.)
