When will we invest in an outside threat at WR?

DHB was also heavily relied upon to be the #1 WR in Oakland, he'd be much less of a priority for New England, he might be matched up against 3rd or 4th coverage options if he came here. Just a thought.

I have no issues with seeing if he fits the role here as long as he isn't being paid like anything more than a #3.

a deep threat can be any average WR that can run a post route and im sure the pats will bring in to camp vets UDFA and a draft pick or two with good speed.... the problem is when everyone on this bord says why dont they sign a deep threat what they really mean is why dont the pats sign Calvin Johnson, thats just not going to happen the pats are not going to give 12 million for a #1 WR when the passing game goes through the two TE's

I think this is the perfect draft to grab an outside WR (or two). Two guys I'm not high on though are Tavon Austin and Keenan Allen. Allen offers very little versatility with over 60% of his passes caught within 5 yards, over 86% of his catches made at less than 10 yards and just 3.33% of his catches made over 20 yards. He is solid after the catch but doesn't spread the field or offer much variation. Some of that may be because of his QB at Cal, but for a 1st round WR I need more. I feel similarly about Austin, who despite his speed is overrated as a 'deep threat'. He is definitely a big play threat, but only 7% of his passes were caught past 20 yards with over 1/3 of his catches screen passes. He simply doesn't offer enough as a pure WR to interest me.

There are a bunch of guys I really do like in the 2nd/3rd rounds. If we can come out of the draft with any 2 of these guys I would be very happy.

DeAndre Hopkins
Justin Hunter
Markus Wheaton
Da'Rick Rogers
Quinton Patton
Terrence Williams
Robert Woods (only if he falls though)

I would not be surprised if we trade Mallet for a 2013 3rd and 2014 2nd/1st, and use our own 3rd rounder to move up in the first round in order to get an "X" receiver.
