Does the patriots coaching staff not value a "Deep Threat?"

They aren't going to overpay someone from outside the system 12 million+ a season to attempt to do it.

They'll have to look to the draft for young, cheap rookie deal talent.

I also believe that they'll bring in some veterans to compete for the WR position, although they will be priced accordingly.

The Pats had the best ever deep threat and still one of the best at the time in 2010. They traded him in favor of a more versatile option and the offense got better.

Who were they going to get? Pay $13+ million to out bid Miami (who are in a state with no income tax) for an one trick pony in Mike Wallace?

Who knows? Maybe the Pats will sign Laurent Robinson or Darius Heyward Bey who may be the best deep threat WRs after Wallace and Jennings. But are anyone going to excited about Laurent Robinson or Darius Heward Bey? That is what you got in free agency.

Darius Heward Bey
I think this is realistic and makes some sense. I'd be awfully interested to see how people react to a WR that is fast, tall, but can't play football, as opposed to complaining about players that are short, slow, but can play.

Make up your mind. Do you want an outside threat or a deep threat? There is a difference.

The Pats have an outside threat in Lloyd. He works the sidelines better than anyone we've had in ages.

As far as a deep threat, they have Gronkowski and Hernandez. They also have a speedster in Jeremy Ebert who may surprise us.

I for one would love DHB.
Ive been hoping the Patriots would make a move for him he can take the top off a defense and pry can be had for like 2 yrs 7 mill total with 3.8 guaranteed or something like that .
Also bring back Edelman.

Cribbs sounds like he's headed for aZ.

what about Benn from TB being shopped?
Always the possibility of victor Cruz as well.

I say DHB and draft Darrick Rogers
The kid can play I don't care that he was a punk in college.

I'm upset too...........

32 hours is more than enough time to fill out our entire roster for the coming season

Ebert will surprise most of us if he makes the team.

There will be one-trick ponies (deep outside threats available). I'm sure we'll bring a half-dozen into camp.

at the risk of being nuked, the draft has YET to occur...this is a deep draft for WR's according to most experts...Justin Hunter will be there in the 2nd, late 1st..a 4.4 burner... or they could grab the versatile Keenan Allen, who can play all three slots.

Do we have a QB that consistently hits a deep threat?

Brady is a bit older now ... can he stay in the pocket long enough for a deep threat to get open?

I'd rather have Lloyd and another sideline threat with great hands.
Don't forget we can send Vareen long here and there to mix it up or Demps.

I really like the Wr in the draft this year to stretch the field, Tavon Austin, Corderelle Patterson and Robert Woods all caught bombs in college.

Austin and Patterson will be long gone before we pick...if we stay at 29...Woods could be there but he's 6 feet flat...there are equally as adept WR's that are the same vertical speed with better size.

most will be gone before pats pick so that option is probably out the window

when will we? After gronk or hernandez is gone...you know how much $$ is tied up in them? if we didn't have them or only had 1..then we would go for a #1..until then...we can't

To be a deep threat one has to actually catch the football consistently, not just run really fast downfield. While Darrius Heyward-Bey does possess exceptional straight line speed, does he have the football awareness to understand the nuances of the Patriots' playbook and not just be a one-trick pony/useless decoy or the hands to consistently "go up and get it"?

If not, then, I'd rather the Patriots just stick with Donte' Stallworth, to be the team's straight line speedster. Even at his advanced age at least we know he can actually catch a deep pass and knows the playbook (a little).

So far Heyward-Bey hasn't consistently shown anything other being a colossal Al Davis bust. Perhaps a culture change is what a player of his talents needs. Though its likely he really just can't put it together regardless, I mean he did get cut by the Raiders of all teams.
