DRAFT Wheatley and Wilhite

Plays that are that wide open are usually blown coverages.
Certainly a penchant for blown coverage is an issue with a corner, but if we assume it was a mistake, its not a real good indication of his coverage ability.

He was on a Corner Blitz.

How do you expect a guy to cover a WR when he's blitzing?

haha...take it easy.
I'm not lambasting or attacking anybody, I even said to be fair to the guy it's only his second year.
I just threw out an observation that could possibly have something to do with his status as nickel at the end of the year.

the guy(s) who pointed out it was a complete team failure are absolutely right, and there were at least a half dozen torchings, so which particular one you guys are referring to I don't know.

The one play I'm talking about is at the :55 mark of this highlight. Sorry about the annoying box at the top of the video.

Well to be fair he lambasted Wilhite for his performance in that entire game and you brought up one play where Meriweather screwed up. I didn't see eom bring up that play in his attack of Wilhite. I'm not trying to defend or attack Wilhite here, I just think that the Saints game was catastrophic failure all over the place and highlighting plays or even the entire game to analyze a player isn't a good idea.

Well then go back and re-read without bias because I've not blamed anyone.

Maybe you're not properly understanding why I brought that up. He said this...

I'd also note that he got torched by both meachem and colston in that w12 saints game

Well, one of those instances is wrong based on the YouTube video I just posted. Wilhite didn't get torched on the Meachem TD pass. He was on a corner blitz.

Presently, I see Wilhite as our #2 CB going into the season.

That may be your assessment, but considering he was at least the 3rd or 4th CB at the end of the season and we added a high rd CB, I couldn't agree with you on this one.

At the end of last year it appeared to be this:

1. Bodden
2. Butler/Springs
3. Wilhite

At the beginning of this year I think it will be this:

1. Bodden
2. Butler
3. Springs/McCourty
4. Wilhite

(not including Wheatley or Arrington of course)

I think there's a possibility Springs may not be here, although that's just some speculation as I don't have an opinion one way or another. If Springs is gone, Wilhite may be able to battle with McCourty for nickle back. If Springs is still here, it only pushes Wilhite down on the depth chart even further. We also don't know if Wheatley can step up and battle him for any time either.

To bottom line things, I see Wilhite as a sure-fire sub package guy in on nickle or dime situations---until there's an injury. With the addition of McCourty, he'll have to earn his spot in the depth chart, like anyone else.

I cannot agree that he's a #2 CB right now, or in the future. If he does his job well in 5-6 DB situations, he can earn a spot back for more time in base packages, although Butler likely has a good upper hand there.

I think it will be
1 Bodden
2/3 McCourty/Butler (and it should be very competitive)
4 Wilhite
5 Arrington (kept for special teams)

Springs and Wheatley will be one.

That would be great, for McCourty to step in immediately and make a contribution as a starter. He certainly has the potential to be something special. I was impressed with the sports science bit about the backpeddling speed, that symbolizes everything we need at the position.

I think we may need one more solid player at the 5 slot, if/when injury occurs, we'll likely need someone for dime duty. It could be we only cut one of Springs/Wheatley, or we cut both and pick up another teams' castoff. I haven't seen enough of Arrington to make a judgement, although we've certainly been in worse situations and survived just fine.

Third and 7. Ellis Hobbs is 12 yards from the WR. WR catches pass for 10 yd gain and 1st down. Hobbs makes tackle. Hobbs gets up and celebrates. Hobbs helps Patriots more by being in Philly.

I didn't mind Ellis Hobbs' celebrations after the three long kick returns for a touchdown he had here (93, 95, and 108 yards).

Last year the longest return we had was 52 yards. That was by Laurence Maroney, whose actual average kick return was paltry at best (21.5 yds per return). The next longest kick return on the season was just 35 yards (by Matt Slater). Brandon Tate only had four kick returns before getting hurt, but he did look pretty good in those returns. So there is some promise for the future, but my point remains that Ellis Hobbs' departure really hurt our kick return game last year.

ok, we are all apparently talking about different plays, so commence the unbunching of panties......

I agree on this depth-list. Wilhite isn't bad, it's just he does not know when to turn-around when the ball is close to the WR he is protecting. I think that's part of the fault of the secondary-coaching. If you see Wihite, he is close to the WR, but his back is always turned from the ball. He, along with Butler, needs to be taught on how to read the WR's face and hands, such that our CB knows it's time to turn around...

Springs has not done much, hurt mostly. I would clip him. Wheatley is gone. He gets burned way too much.
