The Staten Island Corner

Happy 47th birthday to Lewis Sanders
Born June 22, 1978 in Staten Island, NYC
Patriot cornerback/safety, 2008; uniform #29
Signed as an unrestricted veteran free agent on March 6, 2008
Pats résumé: one season, ten games (four starts)

After five seasons with the Browns, two in Houston, one in Atlanta plus an offseason in Jacksonville, the Pats signed the well traveled 30 year old veteran as a free agent early in the 2008 free agency period. The Patriots had been burnt the previous season by their lack of height at cornerback, and at 6'1 Lewis Sanders was envisioned to be a nickel back that could be used against taller receivers.

October 12, 2008 at Qualcomm Stadium: San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson (RIP) #83 can't hang onto the ball, as teammate
Legedu Naanee #11 looks on. Defending the play for the Patriots were Brandon Meriweather #31, Ellis Hobbs #27 and Lewis Sanders #29.

Lewis Sanders appeared in ten games for the Pats with four starts, two at corner and two at safety. Other than Ellis Hobbs, the 2008 CB position was mediocre at best for the Pats. Deltha O'Neal was signed as replacement for the free agency departure of Asante Samuel, but O'Neal was burnt worse than a Canadian on spring break in Florida. Terrence Wheatley was constantly hurt, and fellow rookie Jonathan Wilhite just wasn't quite fast enough for a guy who was 5'9.

Lewis Sanders (not to be confused with teammate James Sanders, who was also a defensive back) was forced to play because of the deficiencies of that group. However he was not offered a contract the following offseason, as the Patriots attempted to upgrade the position (with mixed results) in 2009 by signing Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs. With Wheatley and Wilhite only entering their seasond season, it was too soon to pull the plug on a 2nd and 4th round draft pick. Bodden and Springs' contracts guaranteed them roster spots, so there was no room for another veteran corner. Similarly, safety was set with Brandon Meriweather, Brandon McGowan, James Sanders and rookie Patrick Chung.

Sanders had a workout with Kansas City but did not sign with the Chiefs, and 2008 turned out to be his last year in the pro football. Lewis Sanders finished his NFL career with 98 games played and 29 starts, five interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

March 6, 2008:
Patriots sign CB Lewis Sanders and S Tank Williams -- Patriots.com
Lewis Sanders, 29, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns (2000-2004), Houston Texans (2005-06) and Atlanta Falcons (2007). The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound cornerback has played in 87 career games with 25 starts and has recorded 172 career tackles (137 solo), one sack, five interceptions for 90 yards, 31 passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, while also totaling 51 special teams tackles.

Last season with Atlanta, Sanders played in 14 games with six starts after being signed by the Falcons as an unrestricted free agent on March 7, 2007. He recorded 32 tackles (28 solo) and two passes defensed before being placed on the reserve/injured list with a chest injury on Dec. 17, 2007. He was released by the Falcons on Feb. 15, 2008.

Sept 11, 2008:
Every American over the age of 13 remembers where they were seven years ago today.

Patriots cornerback Lewis Sanders will never forget. He was in hell.

On the anniversary of the terrorist attacks that altered the course of history, Sanders looks back with a mixture of horror and, ultimately, relief.

Sanders’ father, Lewis Sr., was working in his office on the 70th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower when the first plane, American Flight 11, struck the 92nd floor at 8:46 a.m., causing the building to sway and making him wonder if it was about to collapse.

The next 90 minutes were harrowing for the elder Sanders. The hours that followed were torture for his son. Not until 3 p.m. did the young NFL player realize his father was safely across the Brooklyn Bridge.

“That was a rough day,” Sanders said recently in the Patriots locker room. “A rough day.”

It started in Cleveland, where Sanders had just been placed on injured reserve by the Browns and was rehabbing.

“I had treatment,” Sanders said. “Afterward, I went in the cafeteria and I saw the two towers, and I saw the smoke coming out of one of them. I thought it was just a little plane, nothing serious. Then they zoomed in and I realized it was a big plane. I knew my father had been working there for the last five years, and then another plane flew in while I was watching and it was like . . . whoa.”

March 10, 2009:
The Patriots’ signing of Shawn Springs probably signals the end of cornerback/safety Lewis Sanders’ career as a Patriot.

Sanders’s agent, Kevin Pompey, said today that at this point he believes his client is probably not in the Patriots’ plans, after they signed Springs to a reported three-year, $10.5 million contract, with incentives that could push the package to $13 million.

“I haven’t heard from New England,’ said Pompey. “I’m aware of what you’re aware of and based on their signing of Springs and because we haven’t heard from them I can only suspect they’re not interested. I’m basing that on them signing a corner and us not hearing from them. We reached out to them and haven’t heard from them.”

Jan 3, 2019:
Saturday, Lewis Sanders, University of Maryland All-America, nine-year NFL defensive back and all-around good guy will be inducted into the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame. . . .

By his junior season in high school, he was good enough to pick off 11 passes. And by his senior year, Sanders was so dominant that his talents allowed him to "take over games," Sullivan said. Sanders was also the first player to show up on the practice field in the afternoons, and the last to leave the weight room on "lift days." "He never took a down off," said Sullivan. "Lewis’ biggest asset was his work ethic." . . .

Sanders finished in the Top 10 all-time at Maryland in kickoff return yardage and interceptions. And, following his senior season, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns.

Now Sanders was at place where plenty of people were faster, and even more of them were bigger and stronger. But he stuck with the Browns for four seasons anyway, through franchise house-cleanings, and trips to the IR. And after Cleveland, he found a spot with Houston, then the Falcons, and finally the New England Patriots. He wasn’t an NFL star, maybe. But the kid from St. Peter’s was a workhorse, who seemed able to always find a head coach who wanted him, even in the most competitive league in the world. . . .

In his first year of retirement from football, he’s already looking around for something to keep him busy. At 31, he’s decided on what might come next.

"I took the fire department test for the county down here," he said from the golf course. "I think that’s something I’d like to do."

Now, there aren’t many NFL veterans who’ve watched their money, taken care of themselves, and then decide their second career will be as a firefighter.

The Commercial Property Developer

Happy 60th birthday to Steve Johnson
Born June 22, 1965 in Huntsville, Alabama; hometown Oneonta, AL
Patriot tight end/special teamer, 1988-1989; uniform #85
Pats 6th round (154th overall) selection of the 1988 draft, from Virginia Tech
Pats résumé: two seasons (one on IR), 14 games, with three starts

In his rookie season 6'6 Steve Johnson appeared in 14 games, with three starts. He had one catch for five yards, and registered seven tackles on special teams. The following year he was placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the season. Johnson signed with Dallas as a free agent in 1990, but another preseason knee injury led to his premature retirement.

Steve Johnson became a very successful commercial developer in Bristol, Virginia, and the Virginia Tech practice football field is named after him. In his spare time Johnson also drove race cars. Not bad at all for someone who grew up in Oneonta (population 4,844) in rural northern Alabama.

TE Steve Johnson's final year at Va Tech was also Frank Beamer's first year as head coach

March 28, 2013:

November 15, 2013:
HS: We understand that you played tight end at Virginia Tech, had a short pro career and then spent some time driving race cars. How did you end up in commercial real estate, as that is a far cry from those endeavors?

Johnson: My athletic background and my occupation are actually a lot more similar than you think. Sports and business are the same in that each requires the establishment of goals; a clear marking of roles within a team environment so that each person knows his or her job; a high degree of production, which requires tremendous work ethic and passion for what you are doing; and, maybe most important of all, persistence. Especially in this business, you can’t take “no” for an answer.

Two-Game Tight End

Happy 55th birthday to David Frisch
Born June 22, 1970 in Kirkwood, Missouri; hometown Cedar Hill, MO
Patriot tight end/special teamer, 1995; uniform #88
Signed as a free agent on October 24, 1995
Pats résumé: one season, two games

After spending his college years at Iowa Central, Missouri and Colorado State, the Bengals signed David Frisch as an undrafted rookie in 1993. He spent two seasons with Cincinnati, appearing in 27 games with two starts. At 6'7, 260 pounds, Frisch was essentially an extra tackle on the line; he had only nine receptions in the NFL, six coming in his rookie season.

David Frisch was a healthy scratch for six of his eight weeks in New England, appearing in only two games for the Patriots; his only stat was an eight-yard kickoff return. Frisch signed with Minnesota in the following offseason, and finished his football career with Washington in 1997.

Steve Johnson's hometown of Oneonta, Alabama is a thriving metroplois compared to where David Frisch grew up. Cedar Hill, Missouri may only be 32 miles southwest of St. Louis, but it has a population of just 1,875.

In 2008 he was arrested for weed after an odd (but loud) post-midnight rabbit hunt:

pretty sure he's at the bottom of the pile... not 100%, but like 99.9%... the only other guy it could possibly be is John Burke, and the number on the sleeve really looks like 88, not 85...

Happy 25th birthday to Cameron McGrone
Born June 22, 2000 in Indianapolis
Patriot linebacker, 2021-2022; uniform #45, #54
Patriots fifth round pick (177th overall) from the 2021 draft, from Michigan
Pats résumé: one season on NFI, one season on the practice squad

Cameron is entering his fourth season with his hometown team, the Indianapolis Colts. He has played in 22 games the last three years, almost exclusively on special teams (308 snaps on ST, 8 on defense in '23-'24).

Cameron McGrone tore his ACL while he was a Michigan Wolverine, causing his draft stock to plummet. The Patriots placed McGrone on the active/non-football injury list with the knee injury at the start of his rookie training camp, on July 21, 2021.

Things never got much better.

He was placed on the reserve/NFI list on September 1 as part of a series of moves to get to the 53-man roster limit, and he would remain there for the entire season. He was one of 24 players released on August 31, 2022 in order to get down to the 53 man limit, and was then signed to the practice squad the next day.

McGrone was elevated to the roster ahead of the December 12, 2022 game at Arizona, but was a healthy scratch. The next day the Pats reverted him back to the practice squad, but a week later he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts - thus ending his inglorious two years in Foxborough. Last year he was on the field for 152 special team snaps and seven defensive snaps for Indy.

Scouting Profile: Cameron McGrone -- Patriots.com (Paul Perillo)
Strengths: Athletic and mobile. … Good instincts allow his read and react quickly. … Solid fundamental tackler. … Good speed to close. … Has the ability to match up with tight ends. … Effective timing to contribute as a blitzer. … Plays with a high motor. … Has range to play sideline to sideline. … Productive player during his career in Ann Arbor.

Weaknesses: Not the biggest frame for the position. … Doesn't play with great strength. … Occasionally lacks the ability to shake blocks. … Needs to improve his discipline playing in gaps. … Can get out of position with over-pursuit. … Injuries limited him to just 15 starts and is currently rehabbing a torn left ACL, which is expected to keep him out of action in 2021.

Comparable NFL player: Devin Bush, LB, Steelers – Hasn't shown the versatility of the man he replaced at Michigan but similar in stature and style.

"The Patriots could use an infusion of speed to their reserve linebacker group and McGrone brings plenty of it. Injuries have set him back throughout his career, but he's shown to be productive when he on the field in the run and pass games.
– NFL.com draft analyst Mark Dulgerian

Linebacker Cameron McGrone missed all of last season with a knee injury, but has impressed some of New England's coaches despite having such limited opportunities.

The New England Patriots practice squad has been poached by an old rival for the services of one of its most valuable members.

The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly signed second-year linebacker Cameron McGrone to their 53-man roster. As such, McGrone's brief stint with the Patriots has come to an end, without his taking a regular-season snap for the team.

Following their successful drafting of ex-Michigan linebacker Josh Uche in 2020, the New England once again dipped into the Wolverines defensive well with McGrone’s selection in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 6-1, 234-pound linebacker has the potential to be a three-down player in the MIKE role. McGrone played in only 19 games with 15 starts at Michigan, a relatively small sample size for scouting purposes. He finished his collegiate career with the Wolverines with 91 tackles (11 for loss) to go with four sacks and one forced fumble.

McGrone suffered a season-ending ACL injury versus Rutgers in November 2020. As a result, his draft stock plummeted. However, his toughness and impressive range clearly made him worth the investment for New England.

Despite not playing a down for the Pats in 2021 due to his injury, McGrone entered Patriots training camp in 2022 with a great deal of preseason hype. He performed well in early team drills yet faded as practices gave way to preseason games. As such, McGrone failed to make New England's initial 53-man roster. He quicky re-signed with the team's practice squad, where he has spent the entirety of the season. Despite being elevated to the Pats game day roster for their Week 14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, McGrone was declared inactive just prior to kickoff.

The Cameron McGrone Era in New England has ended before it even began.

The Patriots had high expectations for McGrone when they selected him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Michigan. While McGrone sat out his rookie season in New England due to a torn ACL he suffered in college, the hope was that he could inject speed to the Patriots' linebacker corps when he returned to action.

"He's 238, 237 pounds, but I know we had him running a high-4.4 40(-yard dash)," former Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown told our Phil Perry on the Next Pats Podcast back in 2021. "The guy can flat-out run, the guy is a smart football player and I think he'll be a tremendous fit in Coach (Bill) Belichick's system."

McGrone never caught on in New England, though, making a marginal impact in three preseason games for the Patriots this summer and landing on the practice squad to begin the 2022 season.

Now, his Patriots tenured has ended without him playing a single regular-season snap in Foxboro.

Ryan Lindley

Happy 36th birthday to Ryan Lindley
Born June 22, 1989 in San Diego
Patriot quarterback, 2015 offseason; uniform #7
Signed as an unrestricted free agent on August 10, 2015
Pats résumé: one training camp and preseason

Ryan Lindley was originally a sixth round draft pick by Arizona in 2014, from San Diego State. He was thrust into a starting role late in his rookie season after Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton were both injured. His performance went about as well as one would expect for an inexperienced player that was intended to be a redshirt, long term project; it did not exactly result in potential suitors outbidding one another for his services. In the final two regular season games Lindley completed fewer than 50% of his passes, and the Cardinals lost both games. Then in a 27-16 playoff loss to Carolina he went 16-28 for just 82 yards, with one touchdown, two interceptions and four sacks.

Lindley was brought in as a camp arm three days prior to the first preseason game, after Matt Flynn (see June 20 entry) was unable to get off the Non Football Injury list and pass a physical. He was also seen as insurance in case Tom Brady was unable to play due to Roger Goodell's witch hunt.

Lindley's only playing time with the Pats was when he was the team's only QB in the final 2015 preseason game, going 22-45 for 253 yards with no touchdowns and one pick. The whole reason he played that game was to insure none of the other quarterbacks would be injured. With Brady by that point being assured of being able to play in 2015, there was no longer any need to retain Lindley, and he was one of ten players waived on September 4. Lindley joined the Colts late in 2015 after Andrew Luck was injured, and then his agent hired him to tutor Carson Wentz and Jared Goff in preparation for the 2016 draft. Lindley finished his playing career the following year with Ottawa in the CFL.

After that Lindley spent two seasons as an assistant at San Diego State, and was hired in 2018 as the running backs coach for the Browns in midseason when openings were created after Hue Jackson and Todd Haley were fired. The following year he was promoted to Cleveland's quarterbacks coach, but the entire staff was let go when Freddie Kitchens was also fired at the end of the 2019 season. Lindley then spent three seasons as an analyst for Utah and Mississippi State. He returned to San Diego as a QB coach in 2022, was promoted to offensive coordinator, and is now the Aztecs' senior offensive analyst.

His career NFL stat line reads 1-5 in six starts with 51.1% of 274 passes completed, averaging 5.0 yards per attempt with three touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a 52.4 passer rating. Incredibly, Lindley's CFL stats are even worse. Didn't Baker Mayfield deserve better tutelage than that?

Ryan Lindley, the school’s all-time passing leader, enters his third season on his alma mater’s coaching staff. Originally hired as an assistant coach on Oct. 3, 2022, Lindley was named the team’s offensive coordinator following the 2022 season. He now serves as the team’s senior offensive analyst under new head coach Sean Lewis.

As the offensive coordinator in 2023, the Aztecs averaged 20.5 points and 326 yards per game while ranking 12th in FBS in time of possession, having the ball for an average of 32:40 per game. He mentored four all-Mountain West honorees led by second team selections Mark Redman and Cade Bennett while Jalen Mayden and Mekhi Shaw earned honorable mentions.

Record-Setting Georgia QB

Happy 42nd birthday to David Greene
Born June 22, 1982 in Snellville, Georgia
Patriot quarterback, 2007 practice squad; uniform #8
Signed to the practice squad on Sept 19, 2007
Pats résumé: one season on the practice squad

In 2007 the Patriots signed David Greene. While playing for Georgia he threw for 11,528 yards and 72 touchdowns, and broke Peyton Manning's NCAA record for most career wins as a starting quarterback.

The Pats released Greene on November 20. He later signed with the Chiefs and Colts, but never got on the field for a regular season NFL game.

April 3, 2005:
Ask PFW: Offseason heats up -- Patriots.com
Q:And I'll throw one more caveat out there, backup QB Rohan Davey wants out next year and is an unrestricted free agent. He wants to try to catch on somewhere else where he's not stuck behind Tom Brady. Do you think they'll draft David Greene in the 2nd or 3rd round if he's there? I think they like him and his 44 collegiate wins. So to me, offense is where they should concentrate early on, what do you think?

PFW:If the Pats take Greene, perhaps they can trade Davey and get some value for him rather than lose him to free agency. Greene would certainly fit the bill as a winning quarterback. Chris Redman has some starting experience and might be able to back up Brady along with a rookie. It's also possible that the Pats would keep 4 QBs in that instance just as they did when Brady was a rookie in 2000.

Sept 19, 2007:
The Patriots announced the signing of QB David Greene and S Ray Ventrone to their practice squad today.

The team also announced it has released OL Clint Oldenburg from the practice squad. Oldenburg was drafted by the Patriots in the fifth round this year.

Here is some information on Greene from the team’s press release:

Greene, 25, was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round (85th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft from the University of Georgia. The 6-foot-3-inch, 225-pound quarterback has not played in an NFL game and served as the Seahawks’ third quarterback for 28 of 32 games from 2005-06. He was Seattle’s backup quarterback for four weeks of the 2006 season while starter Matt Hasselbeck was injured. Greene was released by the Seahawks on Sept. 2, 2007. At Georgia, Greene became the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, with his 42 career victories as a starter passing Peyton Manning’s previous record of 39.

One of the nation's elite quarterbacks, David Greene has helped guide the Georgia Bulldogs to national prominence in recent years, including 2002's 13-1 record and their first SEC title in 20 years.

A CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2003, Greene is a member of the SEC Academic and UGA Athletics Department Honor Rolls. A Risk Management major, he is a regular on the Dean's List and is a member of the Blue Key Honor Society.

Named SEC Player of the Year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Sporting News, Greene is a two-time All-Conference performer - First Team in 2002, Second Team in 2003. Rated the nation's fifth-best quarterback by The Sporting News in 2003, he was one of 15 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award and was named Best All-Around Offensive Player in the Spring by UGA. A starter in all 39 career games, Greene has passed for more than 10,000 yards and 60 touchdowns and is a candidate for the Heisman, Unitas and O'Brien Awards.

A dedicated leader and citizen, Greene was twice named captain of the Bulldogs and received the UGA Copas Leadership Award. A member of the American Football Coaches Association and SEC Good Works Teams, he received the Peach of an Athlete Award from the Boy Scouts of America and volunteers for Habitat-for-Humanity and Toys for Tots.

Greene was selected in the third round (85th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks and appeared on the rosters of the Seahawks, New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts from 2005-08. In 2009, he joined the Atlanta insurance agency Seacrest Partners.

Aug 23, 2012:
Ten years removed from helping lead Georgia to one of its best football seasons, David Greene is content.

The former Bulldogs quarterback, who finished his college days with the NCAA record for career wins, is married with two young sons. After spending time with four NFL teams, Greene, 30, has settled down in Grayson, Ga., working with former Georgia lineman Matt Stinchcomb at an insurance brokerage firm in Atlanta. He said he enjoys not working as a football analyst like some of his former teammates.

April 24, 2017:
Greene and his wife of nearly 11 years, Veronica, are expecting their third child in June. Jordan, 9, and Barrett, 6, will welcome another brother to their home in Grayson, near Greene's hometown of Snellville in Gwinnett County. Greene, 35 in June, is a client executive with Savannah-based Seacrest Partners Inc., a privately held insurance brokerage and consulting firm.

"Some of my fondest memories were high schools sports and football and baseball," said Greene, a star athlete at South Gwinnett High in Snellville. "I really enjoy doing these (awards dinners) and spending time with the kids."

"It's a very difficult transition," Greene said. "When you play a sport like football, it really consumes all of your energy and efforts. It really is an all-in mentality, which is great when you play. There comes a day they say you can't play anymore and you have to transition. A lot of times that puts athletes behind the eight ball. You haven't been planning. You don't know what you want to do."

That day might have come for Greene in 2008, when he was released by the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and not long afterward he announced his retirement from professional football. He was a third-round draft pick in 2005 by the Seattle Seahawks and was on the roster for a Super Bowl run. He also was on the practice squads for the Patriots, Chiefs and Colts, and was on Kansas City's active roster, but he never appeared in a regular-season game.

Happy 39th birthday to Marlon Favorite
Born June 22, 1986 in Gretna, Louisiana
Patriot defensive tackle, 2010 practice squad; uniform #68
Signed to the practice squad on Jan 5, 2011
Pats résumé: 2010 practice squad; 2011 offseason and training camp

Marlon Favorite was signed to the Pats practice squad near the end of the 2010 season. He remained on the roster until just prior to the first 2011 preseason game, released to make room for pass rusher Mark Anderson.

Jan 5, 2011:
The New England Patriots made a move to shore up its depleted defensive line Tuesday by signing free agent Atiyyah Ellison to the 53-man roster. Ellison (6-foot-3, 315 pounds) spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texas, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs after being drafted in the third round out of Missouri by the Carolina Panthers in 2005. Ellison, who has been active for only nine games in his career, all coming in 2009 with the Jaguars, spent a week on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster this season before being waived Oct. 27.

The Patriots had an open roster spot after suspending defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick Monday.

The team also signed defensive lineman Marlon Favorite (6-foot-1, 317 pounds) to the practice squad. Favorite spent 2009 on the practice squads of St. Louis, Kansas City, Seattle and New Orleans after originally joining Carolina out of Louisiana State. He spent time with Buffalo during the offseason and went to camp with Indianapolis before being released prior to the start of the season.

Jan 17, 2011:
The Patriots on Monday re-signed seven players who ended the season on their practice squad. Tight end Carson Butler, quarterback Jonathan Crompton, wide receiver Buddy Farnham, defensive lineman Marlon Favorite, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins, cornerback Thad Turner, and safety Ross Ventrone all signed reserve/future deals and will join the team when rosters expand to 80 players later this offseason. Yet to be officially re-signed from the practice squad are offensive linemen Thomas Austin and Steve Maneri.

May 25, 2011:
“Marlon Favorite was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on January 4, 2011,” it begins promisingly before unspooling a brutal chronology for an aspiring NFL player. Originally signed by Carolina as a free agent in 2009, Favorite has since been signed and waived by St. Louis, Kansas City, Seattle, Buffalo, Indianapolis and the Saints, who brought him on board in January 2010 as they set their sights firmly toward Super Bowl XLIV.

“I do use my football experience — being cut seven times isn’t easy,” Favorite said while tucking into a blackened shrimp quesadilla with green chili sour cream prepared and served by Café Hope participants. “But I never gave up. And that’s the same message I want to send to the youth in this program. I keep it real with them; I tell them, ’it’s not easy doing what I do, and I know it’s not easy for you growing up here.’ I know this area of New Orleans and how hard it is.”

Aug 5, 2011:
The Patriots today signed veteran free agent defensive end Mark Anderson and released first-year lineman Marlon Favorite.

Anderson (6 feet 4 inches, 255 pounds) played five seasons with the Bears before being released last season. He finished with the Texans. Anderson, 28, led all rookies with 12 sacks in ’06 with the Bears. He has started in 20 of 77 games with 134 total tackles, 25.5 sacks, seven passes defensed, five forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He started in Super Bowl XLI.

Greg Bedard's Analysis: Anderson is strictly a pass-rushing end at this point. With the ascension of Israel Idonije last season with the Bears, Anderson became expendable. He’s very active and can get after the quarterback. He can’t defend the run at all anymore. Tight ends cover him up with ease. And Anderson is a 4-3 guy.

Favorite was born in the same town that I got married in seven weeks ago, so therefore he must be a good guy.

Patriots anounce the signing of veteran free agent DE Jon Harris -- Patriots.com
As a rookie in 1997, a preseason illness caused Harris' weight to drop to 264 pounds and forced him to miss the first three games of the season. He started in his NFL debut at Minnesota (9/28/97) and made four consecutive starts before suffering a toe injury vs. Arizona that caused him to miss the next five games. He returned to play in a reserve role for the final four games of the season and finished the year with 23 tackles, including his first career sack vs. Jacksonville's Mark Brunell. In 1998, he bulked up to 300 pounds and played in every game for the Eagles. He started four games, including the last three games of the season, and finished the year with 50 tackles.

June 22, 2002:
Roman Phifer re-signed with the New England Patriots yesterday after finishing second on the team in tackles in his first season with them.

Phifer, 34, signed as a free agent last August and was a strong contributor to the Patriots' run to the Super Bowl. He started every game at outside linebacker and had 92 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception.

Phifer reportedly considered signing with the Oakland Raiders before deciding to stay with the Patriots. He spent his previous two seasons with the New York Jets before joining New England.

Patriots sign 4th Rd. Draft choice Dexter Reid and FA DT Devonte Peterson -- Patriots.com
The New England Patriots announced their first signing from their 2004 rookie draft class today with the signing of safety Dexter Reid. The team also announced the signing of free agent defensive tackle DeVonte Peterson.

Reid, 23, was the first of two fourth round draft choices selected by the Patriots in 2004. He was the 113th selection overall. The 5-foot-11-inch, 203-pound safety started 36 of 47 games at North Carolina, where he recorded 466 career tackles, including four sacks, and three interceptions. He was a two-time, first-team all-conference selection. As a junior, he was named a defensive co-captain and earned the defensive MVP honors after leading the team with 166 total tackles, the second-highest tackle total in school history. He started every game at free safety as a senior and compiled an additional 132 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for losses.

New England signs their
Strange first round draft pick
and other June 22 News

June 22, 2022:
One more 2022 first-round pick is getting under contract.

Patriots offensive lineman Cole Strange will sign his four-year rookie deal on Wednesday, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM.

Strange was the 29th overall selection of this year’s draft out of Chattanooga. While there, he was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection for his play at left guard in 2021. He made 11 starts at the position during his final collegiate season.

With Strange signing his contract, Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett is the lone remaining first-round selection to not agree to his rookie deal.

The New England Patriots clearly delivered the surprise of the 2022 NFL Draft by selecting Chattanooga offensive lineman Cole Strange with the 29th selection.

Despite several draft experts projecting him as late-round selection, the Pats showed a great deal of faith in Strange by securing his services in the first round. As a result, it appears that faith will be rewarded, as Strange is expected to sign his rookie deal on Wednesday, per reports.

With the Patriots feeling the void at left guard after the departures of Joe Thuney in 2021 and Ted Karras this offseason, Strange should be a welcomed addition to the line. Though he has experience at guard, he has the versatility to fill in at center, as well as tackle.

Strange is a tenacious run-blocker with the quickness to generate sudden impact on power runs. He has also displayed an ability to seal defenders on zone runs. He has outstanding upper-body strength, as well as the large hands necessary to grasp defenders in pass protection. In addition to his size, he has fluid movement to mirror his opponent, as well as to recover when he struggles with a defender.

This should be music to the ears of the Patriots, especially quarterback Mac Jones. Despite a stellar rookie campaign, Jones most often struggled in 2021 when opposing defenses attempted to confuse the Pats’ quarterback by deploying strategically placed blitzes from the second and third level of the defense. With a complete, healthy offensive line, the task of protecting Jones against such an attack becomes a bit easier. It also takes a little grit — a trait which Strange exudes. During the team’s offseason workouts, Strange saw the majority of his snaps at left guard, alongside the starting unit. With the start of training camp just over a month away, it is clear that New England has high hopes for its first-round selection.

As of Wednesday, the Patriots were one of just two teams who had yet to sign their first-round pick to a contract. As Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Benzan, the Pats currently have $142,280 in available cap space. In order to fit Strange’s salary into their budget, New England is expected to accompany the signing with some cap-clearing transactions.

June 22, 2018:
The New England Patriots are one step closer to signing their full 2018 draft class.

The team announced Friday that it signed first-round draft pick Isaiah Wynn. The Patriots selected the offensive lineman 23rd overall back in April.

The Georgia product likely will see time at left tackle after Nate Solder inked a four-year, $62 million deal with the New York Giants in March.

With the signing, New England has just one unsigned draft pick: running back Sony Michel.

June 22, 2017:
Former Alabama WR DeAndrew White was released by the New England Patriots, the team announced Thursday night.

The Patriots signed talented LB David Harris, who was released by the Jets, and they cut White to make room for Harris on the roster. White signed with the Patriots last month, and he spent last season on their practice roster.

The New York Jets released linebacker David Harris earlier this month in their purge of veterans. Harris landed with the New England Patriots, who announced the signing of the 10-year veteran on Thursday night.

To make room on their offseason roster for Harris, the Patriots released wide receiver DeAndrew White, a former Alabama standout.

White spent last season as a member of the Patriots' practice squad, making him a part of New England's Super Bowl LI-winning team. The Patriots re-signed White on May 22, allowing him to participate in New England's OTAs and minicamp. The Patriots' offseason program ended on June 15.

White entered the NFL as an undrafted player in 2015, earning a spot on the San Francisco 49ers. He caught two passes for 18 yards and returned six kickoffs and one punt in four games with the 49ers.

San Francisco released White at the end of the preseason last year, and New England picked him up for its practice squad.

In four seasons at Alabama, White caught 94 passes for 1,294 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Linebacker David Harris is officially a member of the Patriots.

Word of Harris’ agreement with the defending champions came on Wednesday, but the move was announced by the team on Thursday along with the roster move they made to clear space for Harris’ arrival. They have waived wide receiver DeAndrew White.

Harris, who was released by the Jets earlier this month after 10 seasons with the team, signed a two-year deal with New England with a reported base value of $5 million. He’s the latest acquisition in a busy offseason that has seen New England use their cap space to add veterans all over a roster that was already coming off of a Super Bowl title.

White made the 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2015 and played in four games. He caught two passes and returned six kickoffs in those appearances and moved on to the Patriots practice squad after getting cut last year. He’ll now have the chance to catch on elsewhere before training camp and may face shorter odds than he did with a Patriots team well-stocked with wideouts.

June 22, 2015:

June 22, 2012:
The Patriots have taken one further step toward making sure their pass defense is an improvement come next season.

The team announced on Friday that it had re-signed safety James Ihedigbo, who was a key member of the patchwork secondary that New England relied heavily upon throughout the 2011 season.

Ihedigbo initially joined the team in August of 2011 as an unrestricted free agent from the Jets. A starter in 12 regular season games and all three postseason games, he set a career high with 72 total tackles and one pass defensed along with 20 tackles and a sack in the postseason. He was initially signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of UMass in 2007.

The Patriots’ pass defense was the NFL’s second-worst in terms of yards allowed last season, as the secondary was ravaged by injuries and inconsistent play.
