Do you guys think he'll re-sign for something like 3-4 years at 5m a piece? I'm kind of nervous offering him too much money because this is the first time Edelman's been healthy for a full season.

I think something in that range, although I could see it going $1M/yr either way (e.g., as little as $4M, as much as $6M).

I agree here. All depends on how other teams view him: A continually improving and now healthy slot receiver, or a hard working kid who's numbers were inflated by Tom Brady, the offensive system, and a lack of other reliable weapons in 2013.

Even at the top of that range though, I think he's worth it to the Patriots.

If teams didn't go more than $5.5m for Welker, they aren't going for more than $4.5m for Edelman. Edelman may seem not as stout to other teams, and he hasn't proven himself.

What he has going for him: youth.

Wild card: he is a fantastic punt returner. Some teams might see a premium there for a roster spot, and decide he's worth $700k than they would otherwise give him on that basis alone.

So, I'll say he gets 3 years at $3.5m to $5.2m.

Why not an escalating salary with incentives?

Say bases of 3, 3.5, 4 with escalators for performance that could push it up to 5, 5.5, 6? I think that would be fair, and with only being 3 years, he'd have a chance to sign a second big FA contract after the 3 years are up and he has 'proven' himself.

My guess would be that he gets ~3-5m per year. I'd be surprised if anyone goes higher.

Pats can deal with that.

thing is. Would someone like Emmanuel Sanders interest them more. I presume he's looking at about 5 per aswell.

The reason Edelman is interesting is that he has proven chemistry with brady and knowledge of our system.

Sanders doesn't have that. Why bring in another small receiver that doesn't know our system when you can just roll with Boyce and Amendola?

my guess is a team pays him 5 mil a year for 4 years, And my guess is that team is not the patriots.

Couldn't the same be said about having Moe/Boyce/Amendola on the roster WRT Edelman. I'm not stating it as fact. I'm just wondering if they look for a receiver to play a different role..
Your point Re: Chemistry with Brady is duly noted.

As you said, he has youth going for him and is one of the best punt returners of all time. And, oh yeah, for those who judge on what you did for me lately, he had over 100 receptions.

The open question is whether Edelman is perceived as worth more to other teams.

If we pay him, I'm hesitant about his PR duties

Part of Edelman's value is that he is one of the best ount returners of all time. If he is signed by the patriots, he will have a dual role.

At least of a couple of teams are likely to do that. Heck, I would do that if I were the DEN, replacing Welker (in his last year) with Edelman on a long-term deal.

Davone Bess - Cleveland Browns - 2014 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

Before his problems of course, Bess received a contract of 4 years 14 million at age 27.

Davone Bess, WR for the Cleveland Browns at NFL.com

He had youth, durability, and 5 years production at the slot WR position. Offering Edelman anything above this is foolish.

I've stated how I feel about Edelman. I want him back, but spending longterm on two slot WRs isn't smart IMO.

BB valued Amendola at 6 million per year, which is elite slot WR money. Clearly he thinks he is one or else he we wouldn't of paid him that. He was terrible in 2013, its time for him to prove himself in 2014.

When you approach towards 5 million a year for Edelman, wouldn't it be smarter to give that money to good outside WRs, such as Boldin or Maclin on 1-2 year deals?

WR1: Dobson
WR2: Boldin/Maclin
slot WR: Amendola

for the same price as:

WR1: Dobson
WR2: Amendola
slot WR: Edelman

As usual I'm sure Krafty Bob will nickel and dime Edelman, just like he did Seymour, Mankins, Ty Law, Welker, Asante Samuel, etc...

Eric Decker is an UFA after this season, and Demaryius and Julius Thomas are both UFAs after 2014. They'll have to worry about locking up their own receivers before they even consider adding a guy like Edelman. As it stands, my guess is that Welker will be a cap casualty before the end of his contract.

We have to re-sign Minitron. He's going to make the pro bowl next year, he's getting better and better each game.

I would assume maybe a 4-year 16-18 mil with half of that guaranteed.
