Because ideally the Patriots never have to play Milton and right now they aren’t in win now so there’s no real downside to getting a somewhat worse backup. Milton on the team right now is not what’s going to save us if Maye gets hurt and keep us in contention.

Meanwhile his value is probably highest now. Unless something goes wrong, he won’t have much playing time the next few years and he has the cheap years on his contract now that give it value.

Jimmy G didn’t go for a first specifically because we waited until the last minute to trade him and the 49’ers were in a position where being forced to negotiate a contract in a few weeks with him was a downside they could leverage against us.
Another reason that Garoppolo didn't fetch a first is that by trading him, the Patriots needed a new backup. The 49ers had the only other QB they could get who knew the system (Hoyer), and they agreed to cut him and eat $10M of his contract for a half season.

He has the tools needed to be perhaps an average QB.
However as we all know it's how fast and how much information is in the cranium.

I have seen his name tied to every single theoretical trade proposal thats been made this off season...

my particular favorite one was Milton straight up for Myles Garrett... lol, sure, I'd do that in a heart beat... not sure cleveland would though...

so whats he worth, if anything, on the trade market?

my personal opinion is he's worth nothing.

TLAPFTJMIWADP (then laughed at Pats fans thinking Joe Milton is worth a draft pick)
Know what he's worth? Keeping.
Especially when Maye has to miss time from more concussions.

that is why fixing the line is priority 1 this year

I think he's worth more to the Pats (keeping a 6th rounder who costs virtually nothing and could serve as a backup for a few years) than he's worth to other teams (who haven't seen him practice and have only seen him play against 2nd and 3rd string defenses).

I know he's cheap but it shouldn't be lost on us that no one wanted him for 5+ rounds last year. I can't imagine any team is going to offer major draft capital a year later with really not much new information. Is he good enough to be anyone's starter right now? Probably not. If teams want a project they can draft one in the 5th or 6th round rather than trading a higher pick.

I've heard a few people mention the Steelers. I would imagine they plan to let Russ go and resign Fields (who will be way cheaper). I'm not a huge Fields fan but he does have at least some experience and some success in the league. He got a raw deal last year playing in an offense that wasn't really designed for him. If I'm the Steelers I'm not letting Fields go and then trading my #21 to get Joe Milton to run a team that at least talent wise is a playoff contender. It just doesn't make sense.

We've been here before, and it's natural to overvalue your own players. Every fan base does it. I like Milton, but if anyone offered anything higher than a 4th I would take it and run.

I think he could possibly be a decent backup on cheap money
Even if we got a third for him this is supposedly a weak draft
If anything coach him up and let’s see what we have

I think one of the questions not yet talked about is "what is best for Maye's development?" Is it wise to keep as a backup another second year player? Or is it better to have a guy who has been in the trenches and can help Maye? I'm not talking about Jacoby, more guys like Brian Hoyer who had some success at times as a starter and who brought a lot to practices. I'm not sure exactly who that is, but if the Pats think that's important, it could make them more likely to trade Milton.

He was accurate, played within the structure of the offense, and made plays with his legs. I'd say a 3rd at this time who knows latter preseason

?

Brian Hoyer - Career Record: 16-25 in 15 seasons
Jacoby Brissett - Career Record: 19-34 in 9 seasons

Yet another potential argument in favor of acquiring Milton, a GM on a warm seat could maybe buy himself a couple of years grace. Kid's gotta develop, right?

I don't know about anyone else but I'm starting to think the idea that somebody may come a knockin' may not be so far fetched...
I'm pretty certain we're gonna get offered a 2nd round pick for Joe. He's too enticing compared to what's in this draft for QB's.

A second? that would be pretty amazing

I'd take it and run like a thief in the night

We got a second for Jimmy GQ, who had a lot more spit & polish... three years experience at that point... don't think we will get the same for young Milt...

Kind of an apples and oranges situation contract wise though. If Handsome Jimmy had been traded then with the contract that Milton has now He's have drawn a lower half 1st and an additional pick. Garoppolo was a hot commodity but traded 11th hour at the deadline on an expiring contract with a big payday and FA looming. Milton's contract is a big plus to any acquiring team, Jimmy G's was the football equivalent of a sword over the head

There’s a lot of factors. The weak draft class. The 6th round contract for 3 more years, the physical attributes and skill set. Plus we’re not under pressure to move him, and in fact he’s worth keeping as our QB2 if we don’t get at least a 2nd. Set a high price and stick to it.

I don't know that they will be offered a second, but I would make that trade in a heartbeat. I'd like to see the Patriots get a Matt Schaub like payday for once.

Dont know if this would be an option but a 3rd round pick plus a player ?

In a heartbeat, but there is no way.Come Draft time the talk will be that this isnt as bad as everyone is pinning ( idk trully)

Personally Im wondering only if I try to follow up in the draft for the first time in 7 years. The 4th pick is also going to increase come draft day and value and as of now, without much information, im leaning towards trading down and getting as much picks, while still getting a good BPA for value on offense (DONT COME AT ME YOU ABDUL/DEFENSE LOSERS)
